So Far Gone: A Novel

National Bestseller
""A warm, funny, loving novel. . . . It's an American original.""—Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake
""Who better to give us the latest version of a recluse with a heart of gold than Walter?... It’s a gleeful, kooky and tender homage to Charles Portis’ “True Grit” with echoes of Tom Robbins and yes, Elinor Lipman too.” — Los Angeles Times
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins—and in the propulsive spirit of Charles Portis’ True Grit—comes a hilarious, empathetic, and brilliantly provocative adventure through life in modern America, about a reclusive journalist forced back into the world to rescue his kidnapped grandchildren.
Rhys Kinnick has gone off the grid. At Thanksgiving a few years back, a fed-up Rhys punched his conspiracy-theorist son-in-law in the mouth, chucked his smartphone out a car window and fled for a cabin in the woods, with no one around except a pack of hungry raccoons.
Now Kinnick’s old life is about to land right back on his crumbling doorstep. Can this failed husband and father, a man with no internet and a car that barely runs, reemerge into a broken world to track down his missing daughter and save his sweet, precocious grandchildren from the members of a dangerous militia?
With the help of his caustic ex-girlfriend, a bipolar retired detective, and his only friend (who happens to be furious with him), Kinnick heads off on a wild journey through cultural lunacy and the rubble of a life he thought he’d left behind. So Far Gone is a rollicking, razor-sharp, and moving road trip through a fractured nation, from a writer who has been called “a genius of the modern American moment” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

And hope, even when up against fundamentalist paranoia and stupidity.
Humour here reminiscent of Tom Robbins.
The PNW will play itself in the movie version.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 30, 2025I had many people telling that I would love Jess Walther's new book - So Far Gone. So - I picked up an audio version and settled in to listen.
Rhys Kinnick has gone off the grid. But when his grandchildren are in danger....there's no question. He's going to save them. And can he save himself?
Honestly, I bounced between laughing and crying. There are many truths in Rhys’s beliefs, his history, his actions and reactions and more. He’s forced to step into his past with a second look. What about the future? He’s just such a wonderful lead character. And the supporting cast was just as well drawn.
Now, there’s a lot of light hearted situations and dialogue. But things get darker as you get closer to the end of the book. It was really late when I got to that section.. And I couldn’t stop listening. There’s much food for thought in So Far Gone.
Edoardo Ballerini was the narrator and he did a fantastic job of it. I find that sometimes I become more immersed in a tale. This was the case with So Far Gone. Ballerini captures the actions, the thoughts, dangers and more with his voice. He has created voices for all of the characters that suit and it's easy to know who is speaking. His his voice is clear and easy to understand. A wonderful presentation of a wonderful novel.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 20, 2025I almost felt set up or played for a patsy when I read this. I wondered if the author made a list of every current hot topic to include in the book. Then checked each one off his list. The tired plot included single parent guilt and dilemmas, children by different parents, sassy and sulky kids, estranged father and daughter, death, unfaithfulness, fooling around outside marriage, anti-technology, drugs, going off the grid, rock
concerts in the woods, gender issues, indigenous issues, far right religion, mental illness. To name a few. Very predictable plot, where you know exactly how it's going to end up. Highly unrecommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good!
Verified PurchaseThe dialogue is spot on. The characters are well developed and nuanced. Each chapter devotes some time to unfold the subtleties of the characters as it also propels the story forward. It is laugh out loud funny in parts while also depicting a country divided by extremism. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story with a brilliant sock it to ‘em POV
Verified PurchaseThis novel is both enjoyable and educational. An old journo living off grid is surprised to find his grandchildren at his door. He doesn’t remember how old they are, having isolated himself from his family after socking his born again son in law at a Thanksgiving meal. Things get colourfully worse from then on, but there’s healing between Rhys and his daughter Bethany by the end. It’s hard won though.
Things to like: the psychological insight brought to all the main characters; right on point political and social analysis explaining America’s current woes; a deep sense of sadness at ecological destruction; a fast boiling plot. Overall, you get the sense that Jess Walter is well educated and wise. It’s a terrific read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let it sneak up on you
Verified PurchaseWhat a beautiful, tragic, and bittersweet story. However this is also a story I will return to because there is just so much of a muchness. At it's heart is the question where do we stand in this time when all of life seems overwhelming. What I admire most is the reality of survival for most Americans living in the eastern Pacific NW; good people who are all too often demonized by a righteous, progressive, arrogant western Pacific NW. Ultimately it is not what side of the divide you are on, no one can promise to keep their family safe. And as Bethany says to her daughter at the end, it's ok if you don't believe in God right now, He still believes in you.
