I got this for my son's 5th birthday. He received a bunch of LEGO sets at the same time so it worked out perfectly, as this particular Snap Circuits set can connect to LEGOs. I'm doing the circuitry for him but showing him what I'm doing so he's starting to understand how it all snaps together. If he was another year older I could probably trust him to do the circuitry himself since it's super easy to connect, you just need to understand enough not to create a short circuit (which is also explained in the manual that comes with the set). For now he was able to build his own house and I helped him set up a light inside it and he loves it so much he keeps it turned on in his room overnight.
From what I can tell the other Snap Circuit sets don't connect to LEGOs but they do connect to the little adapter pieces this set comes with, so I may pick up more to build more complex projects in the future. I like that it works as a toy but also helps build interest in science.
