- Reviewed in Canada on October 29, 2018Verified PurchaseSky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is an almost all-CG movie that mixes noir and science fiction in a 30s pulp way. It's a bit bombastic at times and has a peculiar sense of humor. The cast is terrific and the film's look is unique.
While not a superhero movie per se, it certainly paved the way for the CG battles royale and mix of live action and CG characters that can be found in many of today's superhero, science fiction, fantasy and horror movies.
The extras on the Blu-ray are also excellent - especially the commentary track by creator Kerry Conran.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2020Verified PurchaseThe film was quite groundbreaking in how it was made. The actors were largely on blank stages in front of green screens and everything was added in after. While it's common now, it wasn't at the time. The special features are very interesting to watch. They did a great job with this and all the actors, film makers, etc. believed in this underdog of an film and stuck with it for years, with little budget or big studio backing. The original 7-minute promo was done on a home computer (very hard to do back at that time) and it looks amazing (watch the special features).
The film looks so cool and was visually inspired by 1930's era films and pays homage to some films (Hitchcock, Superman vs. the Mechanical Monsters cartoon, Lost Horizon, etc.). I can't say it's the best script / plot / story, but it's always interesting - it kind of plays out like the old cliff-hanger shows too (where you'd have to go back to the theater next weekend to see what happens next).
A unique blending of old and futuristic film imagery, using modern digital technology to convincingly recreate past eras, but set in the future. I admit that reading that sentence may make little sense... until you see the film!

I was disappointed with this 4k version. At times the faces looked flat almost as if they were computer generated.
If you're a film buff you'll probably buy this version for the bonus/special features.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 4, 2021Verified Purchase"SkyCaptain and the World of Tomorrow" is a very underrated movie. It doesn't get the credit it deserves. I have watched the movie several times and I really enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lástima de doblaje !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
Verified PurchaseI will keep this short. This is one of my favorite movies and one of the best of this kind ever made. Finally it is out in 4K and let me assure you this transfer is flawless. Perfect restoration with the balance of colors and contrast of the original film maintained exactly as Conran intended it.
Look for all the easter eggs and nods to other films in this movie. If you look hard you will see King Kong, Godzilla, Skull Island, the Dagobah creature that got R2, the sunken ship Venture that transported King Kong, the Robots from the original Fleischer Cartoons, the drilling machine from "At the Earth's Core" and many, many more. Just buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mission accomplie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something unique
Verified PurchaseThis film is probably marmite but if you want to buy the blu ray it's probably because you like it. I love the film so 5 stars from me. The disc however has no features and is literally film only. Tbh the actual quality isn't a great leap from the dvd but part of that seems to be the look of the film, there's only so sharp it would ever look.
