I wanted more knowledge than just a name, and this book provided the best story of this great leader I could find. America has a great history, even though it may be soiled occasionally , we should all read and learn.

Discover the remarkable life of Sitting Bull...
A prominent Lakota Sioux chief and medicine man, Sitting Bull was both a man of peace and a man of war as he sought to simultaneously fight and negotiate on behalf of his people during the westward expansion of the United States. It was his visions that inspired and led the Native American warriors to victory in the legendary Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. This triumph would, however, be short-lived, and Sitting Bull and his loyal band of followers would be forced to surrender their freedom only five years later.
Sitting Bull led the Sioux Nation through some of their most turbulent times as they faced the loss of their ancestral lands and were forced to move to reservations—reservations which steadily decreased in size according to the whims of the U.S. government and the discovery of new gold deposits. His death on the Standing Rock Reservation at the hands of Indian Agents in 1890 would help to spark one final uprising on the part of the Lakota Sioux, one that would culminate in the tragic massacre at Wounded Knee.
Sitting Bull was one of the most important figures in the history of the Native Americans and their struggle against the government of the United States. This book reveals his incredible life and legacy in full.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2022Verified PurchaseEveryone knows his name but not everyone knows his story. This bio gives a more complete picture of his life.
I do have some issues with the bio. One is the use of modern slang in telling Sitting Bull’s story. He is “tapped” to be chief. The cavalry “bring heat” on the Sioux. Ugh. Write properly.
The biggest event in his life was the Little Big Horn battle. It is dispensed with in a few paragraphs. Custer and his men are shot with bullets and arrows until they are all dead, is basically how the author describes the iconic fight. Not nearly good enough.
Then there is his death which is connected to Wounded Knee. They talk about his terrible end well enough, being shot by tribal police, but the massacre at Wounded Knee is brushed over. Again, not good enough.
This will still give you a decent idea of how the west was lost from Native American eyes and for that this slim book is valuable.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Great Leader
Verified PurchaseThe story of Sitting Bull as told in this book is one of a great leader. You are given a glimpse into his life and times. My only problem was there was no mention of the battle for power between Sitting Bull and Red Cloud over who was the voice of the Lakota. But still it was good reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise and well written.
Verified PurchaseWhile this little book is brief, it is well written, concise and easy to read. It is painful to read how such a proud and gifted man, along with most of his entire race, were subjugated by the usual self entitled European bully boys of the time. Much the same happened here in Australia, although I think the invaders of Australia were even more vicious and entitled.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Sitting Bull
Verified PurchaseI enjoyed reading this book. It was clearly and concisely written. A good introduction to native American culture etc. I feel as if it just glossed over his entire life and death. I wish that it had went further into details about survival on the run from U.S. forces and major events in general. A good Sunday afternoon read. I would read again

4.0 out of 5 stars Sitting bull peace trier
Verified PurchaseI enjoyed the story. Yet I did not like how the insians was tricked lied to. Sitting bull tried several times to work with the new Americans in peace. Yet he was killed in which I think was wrong.
