Product description
Rain Bird 42SA+/4PK Simple Adjust Gear Drive Rotor, Adjustable 40° - 360° Pattern, 26' - 38' Spray Distance, 4-Pack. This is a convenient and economical 4-pack of Rain Bird 42SA+ gear drive rotors. With its intuitive adjustments and impressive coverage uniformity, the Rain Bird 42SA+ gear drive rotor waters all areas of your lawn evenly; reducing water use and providing greener, healthier grass. The many safeguards and trouble-free features built into our closed-case rotor sprinkler make it the perfect choice for any home landscape. Quick check arc/fast forward feature allows you to check or set arc while sprinkler is running. Easily adjusts at the top with a flat blade screwdriver from 40° to 360° part-circle arc rotation, and reversing full-circle rotation to ensure you're watering only things that grow, not the house, sidewalk, or driveway. For installation convenience arc rotation is factory preset at 180°. Rain Bird's patented industry-leading Rain Curtain™ nozzle technology delivers a uniform, rotating curtain of large water droplets that fall exactly where you want and resist windblown overspray. The nozzle's "micro ramps" also direct a portion of the spray close to the head eliminating dry brown spots common with other rotor brands. The nozzle's superior coverage uniformity helps reduce watering time saving money on water bills. The protected closed-case design makes the 42SA+ ideal for “creeping” grasses, sandy soil and other harsh surroundings. Water-lubricated, gear-driven design provides long-lasting dependability; true 4" pop-up height clears taller grass. Dual-action, positive-stop wiper seal protects internal mechanisms from debris while assuring positive pop-up and retraction. Heavy-duty rubber encased cap helps protect against damage from edger strikes. O-rings and seals for extra protection in “gritty” water; and a self-adjusting stator that doesn't require replacement when changing nozzles. Rotor comes with a preinstalled 3.0 gallons per minute nozzle designed for a throw distance of 26' to 38' at common residential water pressure of 45-55 PSI. Nozzle is easily removable and additional nozzles are available (Model# 4252NZLPK sold separately) to customize watering based on your specific flow rate and system requirements. 3/4" NPT female bottom threaded inlet. Professional Grade Efficiency In Six Rugged Models
Rain Bird gear driven rotors water all areas of your lawn evenly.
- Intuitive adjustments and impressive coverage uniformity.
- Reduces water use while keeping your grass green and healthy.
- Choose from 6 models with 32' to 50' maximum throw distance.
Superior Coverage Uniformity
Contractor preferred Rain Curtain nozzle technology
- Creates large, wind resistant water droplets
- Avoids wasteful overspray
- Nozzle "micro ramps" direct portion of spray close to head
- Improves coverage uniformity
Other rotors
- Windblown overspray
- Uneven coverage – too much in some areas, not enough in others
- Dry spots close to the head
Simple Top Adjustments
1. Find fixed left edge by rotating shaft to right until it stops, then to left until it stops.
2. Increase or decrease pattern from 40° to 360° using screwdriver.
3. Adjust distance by turning forward screw.

Rotor Placement
Tip: Overlap Watering Patterns For Best Coverage
Select rotors with throw distances/watering patterns that reach the next rotor. This "head-to-head" overlapping coverage assures all areas receive an even amount of water.

There are instructional videos out there if you can't figure it out on your own. ***These are 3/4"female bottom threaded inlet*** Make sure this is what you need as there are also 1/2" models.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 24, 2020Verified PurchaseSeem to work just fine for now. A lot cheaper and easier to adjust than the Hunter ones. Replaced one that gets run over a lot and stopped turning due to people’s inability to stay on the driveway, do we’ll see how it holds up.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2022Verified PurchaseI replaced an old 'T-Bird T40' head, like in the image. Popped up, sprayed but stopped turning. Not much info on the web on suggested replacement for these, so assumed that a Rainbird 3/4 inch head would work. Was easy to replace and did not dig a large hole. I removed enough dirt to turn the lower cylinder (not the upper cap) with wrench, leaving a perfect hole to drop in the new head. Compress the dirt down a bit so it stays in place before removal of the original. Of interest, I opened the old head and found a couple of tiny pebbles in the gears so this head was likely still usable after cleaning. However adjustment on the 42SA+ is so easy compared to the T40 and spray pattern is really quite a bit better. I would say this was an upgrade as well as a replacement. These days, any day you can save money by fixing it yourself, is a good day.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2018Verified PurchaseThe 42sa heads are easy to install and adjust. The rainbird screwdriver does make it easier but with the right flat screwdriver the same can be done.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 19, 2021Verified PurchaseThese are decent but save your money and get the 5000 series. These only come with one nozzle which is rather large so you can’t reduce or change anything. The one thing I don’t like about these is the top of them where they screw in is extremely large so you have to dig out a lot more of the lawn to remove one or install one compared to pretty much every other brand I have ever used. Also they are 3/4” fittings which ALL Inground sprinkler systems are, so I don’t know what the other person‘s review below is talking about when he saying residential is 1/2”. Lol no it’s not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rotates good, its adjustable with a small blade screw driver.
Verified PurchaseNot expecting the spray pattern to go so far out, but was expecting the spray pattern to be wider than what it is. Even when the adjustment screw turned almost all the way in (clockwise) the water pattern was not really heavy but more of a mist.

4.0 out of 5 stars U can do it yourself save ton from irrigation thuggery..
Verified Purchaseexcellent heads - only minor gripe is they complicate unnecessarily adjusting the flow and the radius (though its not rocket science) to figure out all adjustment.
The flow is controlled by screwing with a thin narrow screw driver (or the tool if you must waste the 5 bucks its really not needed) c;lossest to nozzle/water flow (yes check your blue nozzle plastic cone is in there!) clockwise reduces stream distance while counterclockwise increases stream -warning for novices like me- IF YOU LOOSEN THE SCEEW TOO MUCH THAT IS ALSO THE WAY TO REMOVE NOZZLE AND MY WATER PRESSURE SENT IT FLYING FAR ENOUGH THAT I DDI NOT NOTICE IF FLEW OUT and thought d was broken-but a straight shot of water like hose vs. spraying flow should be obvious to folks paying more attention than me!
FWIW-my quick view of how these work (you need a thin skew driver or the Rain Bird screwdriver tool) but its nothing more than smaller skew driver with flat head..
- the right side slot (visible and right and below nozzle adjustment screw) I use mainly to pull up the pop up heads (and you can check the rotation levels if you desire that way. Since they comee programmed to do 180 degree watering you really need not mess with adjustments unless you need to go above 1`80 or below with the lowest skew driver access port on bottom opposite the nozzle side where clockwise increases your areas above 180 degrees and counter lowers to as low as 60...while this is not truly part of review I wish someone would have posted this for me as it might have saved me a few annoyed 5-7pm digging parties -but then again they are labeled as "Pro/high end" so they probably do not want to make it so easy that any person can swap them like the bigger heads that make the tick tick ticking noise and encase the sprinkler head (used more in smaller yards)..
If you feel braver after getting one basic replaced and working- You can get different nozzles to replace standard "30" size nozzle for Lower Angle (under tree canopies or on hilly areas) , or water saving nozzles for low pressure or other lower irrigation eeed areas (they are a $1. 79 and easy to change even for a e novice like myself)..
I am replacing all my 15 year old Toros of similar type (they had a dirt filter but otherwise those seem superior). I have high pressure and stuck with 3/4 inches even though the 32SAs are about 4 bucks cheaper each- refitting the plastic lines with possible leaks to them plus the versatility of these heads seems superior to the 32SAs-welcoome correction from more pros here.
Next challenge-my heads did needed replacement but root cause of head leaking in base zone after cutting to next zone was the valve gasket or tired solenoid not shutting it all way-not sure yet-- to next fun step- finding a Toro valve compatible with 1999 system-not likely hard but they do not make higher end irrigation very easy for novices - do go to any decent instructional sites on web including RainBird's own site- there is much more than comes with paper insert with these in your package-and these are not much more to buy at your local HD or Ls...FWIW...but still a couple bucks less each I think here in bundled form-might try the 5000 pro ones as they seem to be same line but a notch above--will see if available at decent price...

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, replaced old Orbit w/ New Rainbird
Verified PurchaseYard has Orbits installed about 20 years ago, they are slowly dying. The Rainbird w/ the rain curtain nozzle produces a better spray pattern and has less misting on windy days, watching both side by side. I also noticed that in areas that were struggling, the new Rainbird w/ the rain currain, use it, grass greened up quickly.
They cost the same as the orbits but have a significantly better spray pattern.
