At my age, I watched a lot of these movies when I was a kid. Enjoyed them then and do now. Worth the watch if you like older movies

- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2019Verified PurchaseThis was fun - three of the films were World War 2, "Boost the Morale of the viewing audience films." Which were great because there were no guarantees we were going to win the war at certain stages. So this was serious business because if the Nazis and Japanese had won the war these actors would have been shot for acting in these films. And then there was a truck driver role with George Raft which I like a lot.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2021Verified Purchase...but what they represented when made and what they represent today.
None of these four pictures are the classic Bogie hits (Maltese Falcon, African Queen, etc). but it's a great mix of 1940s Warner Bros. features. I'd only seen one (years) before so that was a plus for me. They Drive By Night and Across the Pacific are interesting because they represent the kind of medium-budget (less than $500,000) Warners (and others) ground out constantly, bringing people into movie theatres two or three times a week, week in and week out. They Drive By Night's the better of the two--watch Ida Lapino's over-the-top performance. This isn't really a Bogie picture, it's a George Raft Picture; Bogart's the co-star.
The other movies here are big budget WW II rah-rah propaganda pictures. That in itself is fascinating.
Passage To Marseille is easily the best picture of the four, a flashback contained in another flashback. Again, Bogie's overshadowed by another actor, this time Claude Rains. What an ambitious movie! A wartime shoot on the ocean or in France was impossible, requiring special effects manager Jack Cosgrove and team to pull out all the stops: matte paintings, miniatures (including moving tractors, cars, a cargo ship and a train), rear screen projection. Gutsy, too: the surrounding German air crew? Bogie just guns them down! The plot: Bogart's a member of the Free French airforce. By the end of the movie, audiences knew a whole lot more about it, which was the intent.
At the and of Action In the North Atlantic, audiences knew a whole lot about the merchant marine and wartime convoys, too--this one to our beleagured allies in Russia--and those lurking submarine "Wolf Packs." Again--quite ambitious. How do you visualize a 70-ship convoy when you can't shoot the real thing at sea? Cosgrove has easily a dozen miniature ships tossing around in the studio tank. Primitive stuff, by today's standards. Didn't seem to matter. Every one of these pictures made money.
Speaking of money---good value here. Four movies for less than $6 each.
