Product description

Mixing a comfortable wide-angle design with an ultra-fast maximum aperture, the 16mm f/1.4 DC DN is part of Sigma's Contemporary series of lenses and is designed for use with Canon EF-M-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at working in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for selective focus control. The optical design makes use of several low dispersion and aspherical elements, which control color fringing and various aberrations in order to provide high sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. Individual elements also feature a Super Multi-Layer Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Benefitting the optical assets, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor for quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that suits both still photography as well as video applications.

    I had used the Canon EF-M22 2.0 and the kit lens (15-45). Although this lens is quite a bit bigger than the 22, the image quality and extra aperture you get from it, makes it totally worth it. Compared to the other two lenses mentioned, it's quite a bit bigger, but still quite manageable for all M cameras

    Got this lens for my M50 MkII as a person who has shifted from an iphone, the 16mm was perfect as its 24~25mm FF equivalent which is the same view the iphone has. at wide open it's a little dull, but f2.8 this thing is simply amazing some of the sharpest pictures you will see. It is quite expensive, but is built like a tank.

    I've given a full set of stars for this though I'm not entirety sure why I need to rate it's thickness. I use this with a Canon M50 as my setup for Zoom meetings and it is perfect, allowing a nice shallow depth of field with great low light performance. It's the heaviest of my M-series lenses but I can see this being on the camera most of the time. Great for landscape photography and a great YouTube vlogging lens too. The other night I tried astrophotography with it and the f1.4 meant I could keep the iso lower than I otherwise would have to this creating a really nice image, though a full frame camera would always win of course. I highly recommend this lens and I'm sure the other mount variants would be just as good - fast maximum aperture, precise focus and a great quality image.

    The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens is a wide-angle prime lens designed for APS-C format mirrorless cameras, including the Canon EF-M mount. It's part of Sigma's "Contemporary" line, which aims to balance image quality and compact size. Here's a review based on available information:
    Key Features and Specifications:
    * Focal Length: 16mm (equivalent to 25.6mm on Canon EF-M APS-C sensors)
    * Maximum Aperture: f/1.4 - This bright aperture allows for excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field.
    * Lens Construction: 16 elements in 13 groups, including SLD and FLD elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations.
    * Autofocus: Stepping motor for quick, quiet, and smooth autofocus, suitable for both stills and video.
    * Minimum Focusing Distance: 25cm (9.8 inches)
    * Maximum Magnification Ratio: 1:9.9
    * Filter Size: 67mm
    * Number of Diaphragm Blades: 9, rounded for smooth bokeh.
    * Build Quality: Dust and splash-resistant construction with a brass bayonet mount for durability.
    * Weight: Approximately 405g for the Canon EF-M mount.
    Pros:
    * Excellent Sharpness: Reviews consistently praise the lens for its sharpness, even wide open at f/1.4, with good edge-to-edge performance. Stopping down slightly further enhances clarity.
    * Bright Aperture: The f/1.4 aperture is a significant advantage for low-light photography and videography, allowing for lower ISO settings and more light gathering. It also provides pleasing bokeh (background blur) for subject isolation.
    * Wide Angle of View: The 16mm focal length (25.6mm equivalent) is versatile for various applications, including landscapes, street photography, vlogging, and astrophotography.
    * Good Control of Aberrations: The lens design effectively minimizes chromatic aberration, distortion, and coma, contributing to clean and high-quality images.
    * Smooth Bokeh: The rounded 9-blade diaphragm helps create smooth and natural-looking out-of-focus areas.
    * Fast and Quiet Autofocus: The stepping motor delivers quick and silent autofocus, which is beneficial for both still shooting and video recording.
    * Solid Build Quality: The lens feels well-made and durable, with dust and splash resistance offering added confidence in various shooting conditions.
    * Relatively Affordable: Compared to similar lenses, the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary offers excellent performance at a competitive price point.
    Cons:
    * Size: While part of the "Contemporary" line, it's noted to be a bit larger than some other APS-C prime lenses.
    * No Optical Stabilization: The lens does not feature built-in optical image stabilization. However, given the wide focal length and bright aperture, this is often less of an issue, especially on cameras with in-body image stabilization (IBIS), though Canon EF-M bodies do not have IBIS.

    With This lens I get the feeling that the M50 can see in the dark. The low light performance is really good. I’m using it for video and it this lens really fits the bill. Very happy. Buying through 鶹 US the price was significantly less than anything I could get locally. So good value.
    Lens feels very professional, weighty and solid.
    Note the filter thread size is 67mm so you can’t use the same filters as the kit lens and Canon lenses, so I purchased a 67mm ND filter and reducer ring.
    Great for general landscape etc. possibly a bit heavy for close up vlogging, try the 22mm instead. But if you need a wide, this is it.
