Purchase options and add-ons
In his New York Times bestseller Steal Like an Artist, Austin Kleon showed readers how to unlock their creativity by stealing from the community of other movers and shakers. Now, in an even more forward-thinking and necessary book, he shows how to take that critical next step on a creative journey getting known. Show Your Work! is about why generosity trumps genius. It s about getting findable, about using the network instead of wasting time networking. It s not self-promotion, it s self-discovery let others into your process, then let them steal from you. Filled with illustrations, quotes, stories, and examples, Show Your Work! offers ten transformative rules for being open, generous, brave, productive. In chapters such as You Don t Have to Be a Genius; Share Something Small Every Day; and Stick Around, Kleon creates a user s manual for embracing the communal nature of creativity what he calls the ecology of talent. From broader life lessons about work (you can t find your voice if you don t use it) to the etiquette of sharing and the dangers of oversharing to the practicalities of Internet life (build a good domain name; give credit when credit is due), it s an inspiring manifesto for succeeding as any kind of artist or entrepreneur in the digital age."

Product description
Review
"[Show Your Work is] timeless; readers can return to it repeatedly throughout life and still glean useful ideas and tips... Anyone starting out (or starting over)...will find upbeat encouragement here." --Library Journal Some people are natural self-promoters. For others, it s painfully difficult to put their work out there. In this creatively designed pocket-sized book, Kleon offers the latter group effective strategies that allow them to share their work without leaving their comfort zone . Kleon s advice is sassy and spot-on. --Publishers Weekly
[The] subtitle could just as easily be, How to Self-promote Without Being a Jerkface. It s an incredibly useful and compulsively readable short book. Fast Company Kleon addresses with equal parts humility, honesty, and humor one of the quintessential questions of the creative life: How do you get discovered ? In some ways, the book is the mirror-image of Kleon s debut rather than encouraging you to steal from others it offers a blueprint to making your work influential enough to be theft-worthy. Brain Pickings A must-read for anyone involved in the creative process. LibraryReads"

- Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2015Verified PurchaseMr. Kleon’s premise for the book is that artists do not need to actively self-promote. Instead an artist can create conditions where their work is findable. He believes the best approach to being findable is to generously share your work and, in particular, your process of working, with others. In a world of social media and the Internet, the barrier to establishing a place to share one’s work is low and therefore, quite doable for any artist.
What I liked about his book is Mr. Kleon provides an approachable method for becoming findable. As I read through the pages, I felt his encouragement and permission to share; to put art out into the world. I particularly liked his advice about dealing with criticism: focus on feedback from the people who have done this type of work or from those people whose opinion you value and ignore the rest.
The drawings and illustrations are unique and quirky, making the book a pleasure to read. He calls himself a writer who draws - which is an apt description.
What did I dislike? Perhaps my criticism is more of a difference in opinion. As someone with a background in marketing, I disagree with Mr. Kleon when he says you should not ask for likes or for friends on social media. If the artist won't ask or at least invite people to look at their work, how can anyone know about what the artist does? Social currency in the form of "Like" or "Retweet" in social media is a powerful influencer. It means more people will come see the work. Creatives send invitations to book launches and art show openings all the time and not always to people they know. As Mr. Kleon notes it is not about becoming human spam but once in a while the artist should extend the invitation. Folks may not know there is a party going on if they are not invited.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who does the hard work of creating art.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 13, 2020Verified PurchaseMany who know me have heard me talk about Math classes in high school and my tremendous success in math. ... If success were defined in frequency of taking the class over. “You have to show your work” is the narrative of my personal Stephen King nightmare. I really enjoyed this book and the mindset it invites in building relationships, support, and the strength to get up and get after it, whatever your it might be. The idea that your efforts at showing your work might help others is particularly relevant at this stage of my life journey.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 30, 2017Verified PurchaseSo you want to be America's Next Top Model, sorry I mean Artist. Okay, so you got the stuff, the creativity, hell even some pieces of work. But you're stumped because you don't know how to share your work without seeming desperate for attention. Alright, then you need to read Show Your Work by Austin Kleon.
This book gives down to earth and tangible advice. There are even some areas where the advice hits home and makes you question whether you're doing this art game even right. Austin doesn't beat around the bush, he won't give you that one advice that will propel your work to stardom. All of Austin's advice in this book is short, applicable but requires patience. So if you're willing to play the long game, then the advice in this book will be gold for any creative endeavours you have.
If you're on the fence to get this book, you should think about what you're losing out on. All the advice you can get without sweating for it. Popular creatives like Ryan Holiday (if you don't know him, google him) recommend Austin's books for all creatives, and Ryan has accomplished a lot with his creativity.
Soooo, get this book and start your creative journey the right way.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2024Verified PurchaseI like this simplicity of Austin’s writing. I wish I read this book 10 years ago. There were multiple practical takeaways that I’ll refer back to. I like the premise of the book. It’s simply “show your work”.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 20, 2014Verified PurchaseAustin is putting some seriously helpful information out into the world with his books.
'Steal like an artist' changed how I view influence and inspiration, teaching me new ways to explore and improve my art. It taught me how to search for and create my own inspiration instead of waiting for it.
'Show your work' is the perfect companion to its masterful predecessor.
Continuing with the same entertaining but straight to the point delivery, genius insight, and honest advice, I honestly cannot say if one is better than the other. They go together so well.
'Show your work' is showing you how to get your art out into the world, not only after you have created it, but as you are creating it. He extends insight on how to invite people into your work, allowing them to see what you're doing, and how hard you work on your craft, even before you have something you've deemed 'finished' and fit for public viewing.
Austin takes the old traditions of artistry and artistry as business, and shows where we need to rethink how we do and/or share things.
Truly, genius is the most accurate word for what Austin is creating here, and I CANNOT wait until the next instalment!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2021Verified PurchaseOk. The key points are decent, but Austin's biggest accomplishment is to manage to sell a book based on a content that would fit in a 10 page word document. Each page is a paragraph length with large fonts and unusual layout so they can say it looks like a book. Why pay more than 10 bucks for a long article that is suited for Medium...
- Reviewed in Canada on March 18, 2019Verified PurchaseI have taken this book out of the library a few times and decided to purchase. Even though the suggestions seem simple, the book serves as a prompt to re-think the way of the traditional art gallery. Any artist knows that is very difficult to get shown in galleries- not because of the work quality, but the sheer numbers of other artists vying for a spot, as well as varying gallery mandates. Our ways of revealing ourselves to the world are constantly evolving now, and this book is helpful to think outside the norm.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspiring book on why to show your work
Verified PurchaseThis is a simple but inspiring book on why to show your work.
If you’re like me, a Gen-Xer… you were told:
- Show your answers not your workings
- Always put your best foot forward
- Never show your weakness
The world has changed, people want to know the the process, the behind the scenes, the outtakes and bloopers.
A great little book to challenge one to show their work!

Verified PurchaseI saw a blogger recommend this book and so do I. Definitely one for the shelves.
Easy read, really good advise which I've already put into practice. Austin Kleon gets straight to the point, good tips and ticks. I've almost finished it and I've had it less than a week 🙌🏼
Small and lightweight to travel with.
