This was a very interesting story, with wonderful actors and sets. The two main actors were great together. This was filmed back in 1980, and there are places where the mini-series shows it in the film quality, but these are momentary. The DVD extras are very entertaining! I found this version better than the current remake, as Richard Chamberlain is a better Blackthorne than the actor in the new version.

Have watched parts of new version of Shogun and this film stands up to recent new version. Richard Chamberlain is excellent as Blackthorn pilot of vessel that lands in Japanese waters. He and his crew are taken prisoner and they find that they are not highly valued. There are a lot of dangerous disputes among the Japanese. Lord Toronaga played by Toshiro Mifune is one rival for power. The Franciscan monks speak Japanese and have a lot of power. John Rhys Davies (Harrison Ford) is a pilot who befriends Chamberlain and speaks Japanese. Chamberlain falls in love with a married woman whose husband is a powerful lord to Mifune. Chamberlain would love to capture the Black Ship which carries treasure to Macau. Chamberlain learns Japanese and gradually gains the trust of Lord Toronaga. There are 5 discs, last disc is the making of Shogun and cast detail the making of this film. Apparently Orson Welles did the narration. There was a lot of difficulty in making the film, hot humid weather and no air conditioning. Toho studios was about 20 years behind in making films with their technology. The film set of the small village was late destroyed in a typhoon just after the film was finished. The costumes were all hand made and Chamberlain's were custom made of silk and were beautiful. Many translators were hired and there was many difficulties in translation to the extras. Highly recommended movie and one of Chamberlain's best.

Dvd set arrived earlier than expected, opened the package immediately and started watching the first few episodes. I was a kid when this serie was aired on tv so it brought a lot of memories!!! Anybody who is a fan of either Richard Chamberlain or the era it was made or the era it portrays, will be greatly satisfied. Spoiler alert: One disc on the set is the "making of" a view behind the scenes of the cast and crew and, actors recall how the shooting went with all the good times and the not so good times... I was thrilled by watching the whole dvd set and would recommand to anybody, very entertaining to say the least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoko Shimada as Lady Mariko steals the show
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025

Amazing mini-series, puts the new one to shame! Sumptuous locations (filmed in Japan), costumes, make up, attention to period detail as only the Japanese crew were able to do. Everyone in it is amazing; in particular Richard Chamberlain as Anjin-san/Blackthorne, Yuki Meguro as Omi (Emmy nominated performance), Toshiro Mifune as Lord Toranaga, Damien Thomas as Father Alvito. However, top acting notices go to Yoko Shimada as Lady Mariko Buntaro (Golden Globe winning and Emmy nominated performance). As Blackthorne’s love interest, interpreter and only main female cast member every time she is on the screen you are swooning. She is so beautiful, sweet, authentic in her acting and her chemistry with Richard Chamberlain is extremely convincing. She literally lights up the screen and softens up the story with its’s emphasis on political chess games, sword fights, macho bravery on land and sea. The romance angle she adds is captivating. Sad this actress did not go farther (passed away in 2022 at age 69). Much praise to Maurice Jarre’s perfect soundtrack as well. Long live the original and best Shogun!!
