Enjoyed getting to the mysteries and how both fantastical religious leaders and soulfulness is threaded throughout. We’ll done. Lots of depth to the story.

About the Author
Nadia Afifi is an Arab American science fiction author who lives in Denver, Colorado. Although born in the United States, she grew up in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain before returning to Missouri for college. From an early age, she knew she wanted to be a writer, but having two scientists as parents also instilled a love of speculative fiction. Her experiences in the Middle East and her multicultural upbringing have driven the stories she wants to tell, by exploring present-day issues such as women’s rights, religion and cultural identities through a futuristic lens. Her father is a Saudi geologist of Palestinian descent, while her mother is an American geologist from St. Louis, Missouri.
She attained a Bachelor’s in Journalism, followed by an MBA, from the University of Missouri and currently works for the Department of Veterans Affairs by supporting new projects to improve the agency’s healthcare systems. While working for the VA, she began her first novel, The Sentient. She has also written several short stories, including “Exhibit K”, which recently featured in Abyss and Apex magazine.
Nadia is represented by Naomi Davis at Bookends Literary Agency. When she isn’t writing or working, she spends her time hiking in Colorado, thinking about her next story on the treadmill or planning her next overseas vacation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great world building, fun characters
Verified PurchaseThis was a fast-paced, engaging read about cloning, religion, and memory. My favorite part was the world building - the city of Westport, new technology like the Eyes (totally going to exist in the future), and the mysterious Pandora project were memorable and fascinating, and I would totally read a companion novel set in this world. One of my biggest pet peeves with other sci fi books is when they info dump a bunch of new terms/technology, and it feels jarring - but this book did not do that at all. The details of the world were laid out in a seamless way, woven into the story. I also found the futuristic method of therapy fascinating. Would read another book by this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Enthralling!
Verified PurchaseBooks that have me thinking about them long after I've turned the final page are literary treasures, and THE SENTIENT most certainly falls in that category.
Not only is the world-building, the science and technology brilliant, but it's presented in a way where even someone like me (science and math were never my forte in school) can vividly imagine it, and even hope that some of these inventions come to fruition during my lifetime.
I say "some" because a few of these futuristic mechanisms are downright terrifying. And y'all! Her unique take on cloning, the melding of science and religion and the afterlife still has me spinning.
Afifi's prose is captivating, and by the time you hit the book's midpoint, the tension is so thick, the action so gripping, it's a mad dash of breathless desperation to see what happens next.
Alas, there was collateral damage (pictured): I was in such a feverish frenzy to turn on my reading light and get back to the story the night prior, I got tangled up with my orchid, sending her crashing to the floor, thus breaking this flowering spike off.
If you like fast-paced sci-fi with strong, inspiring female characters, and stellar world-building, pick up this lovely pronto. I can't wait to see what Afifi comes up with next. 🙏

5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid and creative sci-fi action/mystery that reads like watching a movie
Verified PurchaseI took this book on a vacation and breezed through reading it--it's one of those books that sucks you in and you forget you are reading until hours have passed and you're at the end.
A lot of readers have pointed out the book has well-written action sequences and world-building, but what I truly loved were the mystery elements. One of the central concepts of the story involves technology that allows the protagonist, Amira, to access the memories of others. These memory sequences--which take place at cultist compounds in a rustic setting--serve a transporting contrast to the present-day scenes in the futuristic city of Westport, but also serve to drop clues that help Amira solve the central mystery of what is really going on at the secretive and dangerous Pandora project.
Now I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel to see where the story leads!
