Secrets and Songbirds (The Oculus Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition
鶹
Soren’s world is shattered when her father’s body is found near the border of Draestel.
The archeologist left instructions for his daughter in the event of his death. Soren is to find and destroy the artifact that he was killed for, a magical object with the power to unmake all of Entheas. As she closes in on finding answers, she is kidnapped and taken to the Mountains of Thorncrest. There, she is surprised to find that her captor is not only the dark stranger she has been dreaming about, but the killer’s son. Everything she once knew unravels around her as she discovers the reason for her imprisonment. Thrust into a world that she didn’t know existed, she finds herself growing close to the man she is supposed to hate.
Will she find a way to escape and avenge her father? Or will she fall for the Prince of Ravens?
Secrets and Songbirds is N.J. Rodman's debut Fantasy Romance Novel. It is the first of a series and includes tropes such as enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, fated mates, and forced proximity, just to name a few. It is a loose Beauty and the Beast retelling set in the world of Entheas. Secrets and Songbirds features a strong female lead battling anxiety and grief following the loss of her father. Side characters include a best friend who is trying to get over an abusive past and a lovable boy who provides comedic relief between the more serious themes throughout the book.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 29, 2024I wasn't sure what to expect when I received this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Many reviews stated that it was loosely based on Beauty and the Beast, which I didn't notice the similarities until the last quarter of the book. But... I was very surprised with the ending (even if it was a bit abrupt). It could've gone a couple different directions leaving Cliff hangers in every way, but I was not expecting it to end the way it did. I will definitely be purchasing NJ Rodman's 2nd book and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
Remember, this was her first published book and It far exceeded my expectations. I found it very articulate with unique names (of characters and places) and a good story line. I have read books that have become famous and made into movies that weren't written as well as this. Congratulations to the author on this book and her future in writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than expected!
Verified PurchaseI would give this book 🌶️🌶️ on the spice scale, there’s only 2-3 sections it goes into any actual detail of what takes place 👀
It’s almost like a balanced mix between YA and adult which I actually really liked. This book is set in 3rd person POV which caused the reader to feel a bit disconnected from the characters, which really sucks, because I wanted to be more connected to them. Also, the way the author wrote was almost rushed in some areas which created some confusion for the reader. I believe the author could really create an entire franchise out of this series - have an entire book just for the prologue and then an entire series of books with 1st POV on each character and how they perceived what took place especially because the plot/premise is so good. I could have used a bit more world building and background information, as well as more physical details for the character development. Some parts of this book were skimmed over by the author and I would have really liked more detail, especially concerning Rook and Soren’s relationship - the slow burn is there, but barely.
All in all, I really liked this story and am excited to get into the next book.
If the author ever wants to rewrite this story and make it more thorough, I would be very interested in reading them again.
