In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis offers a satiric and humorous condemnation of human spiritual conflict from the most unconventional point of view. Through a series of epistolary imitations, the novel traces the correspondence between Screwtape, a seasoned demon, and his novice nephew, Wormwood, who has been dispatched to lead a human soul into sin.

With trenchantly sensitive and deep perception, Lewis inverts the traditional view, affording us devil's-eye view of human temptation, religion, and ethics. With this darkly imaginative novel, readers will better understand spiritual conflict, man's frailty, and the dominion of individual choice in matters of good and evil.

Marvellous classic Lewis, I reread regularly.

On p. 200 in para.1 there seems to be a scanning error: HarperOne meant to print, "might offend against the Way of Life,".

The book was in good condition but the cover was not the cover I expected. I specifically ordered this book because the ad showed the cover I wanted but when I got it the book had a different cover. That was disappointing.

When you read other work by Lewis, you are drawn to the clarity of style and thought and the ability to untangle complex issues regarding the validity of faith - now, but also historically. You also enter a world where myth and fact mingle in suspicious ways, making the line between them difficult to see, suggesting that at least part of myth might be fact. Then you read the Screwtape Letters and realize that it is really too bad that Lewis did not write more satire. Because this is wonderful satire. Much of Lewis' thought is integrated within this wonderful correspondence between a senior devil and a junior fiend who has the responsibility of: a) keeping a human away from Christianity, and when that fails; b) making him inert. One cannot help but identify with the thinking of either the senior devil, the junior fiend or the human, at different moments. The letters are filled with observations regarding the relation of thought to faith, science and faith, honesty, honor and other values traditionally associated with faith, wrapped in a style that shows the author has given much thought to the great questions of humanity, but is able to boil them down to a satirical delivery. A Lewis that, regretfully, we don't get to read often enough. But a wonderful, wonderful Lewis.

C.S. Lewis really understood the Gospel and even told it in an unexpected way! In the form of letters from the unseen enemy to another unseen enemy. Very creative!

    What a great read!

I have heard many positive comments of this book and I approached it, expecting it to be brilliant. I have read the Lord of the Rings and I found the writings of Tolkien much easier to read and to keep engaged than this book. The topics within this book are very good and offer a good insight into Christianity and the sins that humanity is plagued with; however I found the first part of this book very difficult for me to keep focused on and the flow was very different for me to grasp.

Satan is trying to destroy humanity and we are generally and blithely unaware of it most of the time. We wander around expecting life to be ordered, but his weapons are numerous and persistent. Just think of all those things you do and repent of and do again and again. C.S. Lewis illustrates the thinking and methods of demons in Satan's service. He said it was the most difficult and draining work he has ever written. Not surprising when we consider that it shines a light on the enemy of our souls and he is not happy. It must have been exhausting playing Devil's advocate for real.

Truthfully, this book is funny in that it's horrifyingly sound in its thought.

I was increasingly mesmerised, horrified, captivated, thankful, and intrigued in how the letters from Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood applied to so much of real life. But from a different perspective.

It really made me get up and make some changes and for that, I thank God and his servant C.S. Lewis.

The way an entire world which I could easily envision was woven from letters from a character that wasn't even in the world himself is devastatingly genius and proof of excellent penmanship and creativity.

The characters were rich and detailed even though we only ever got Screwtape's perspective. Wow. Just wow.

Everyone should read this. Christian or not.

It is certainly now a waste of time. It's pure timeless wisdom. And a good laugh as well. The gut wrenching "oh no, I've been a fool haven't I?" Kind of contemplative chuckle.

Except instead of fear, dispair, or shame. It empowers change. Because you're aware that there's always time to change for as long as you're still breathing. Even if it's just in your mindset.

I am as good as you. 人間はこのように平等には造られていないのである。全体の悪魔指南、もちろんその反対のことを行えば善に至るのである。ともかくぐいぐいと興味引かれる書物である。翻訳も出版されているので参照されたい。
