Home user and wanted to repin 6 locks in my new house alike. In my case cost of this kit was the same if not cheaper than getting a locksmith but you will need an original Schlage key with code to pin locks to. I looked at cheaper OEM kits but glad I went for the Schlage as it's the only comprehensive kit I found with all the tools which made repinning simple and fast. Good detailed instructions for pinning different lock types available on the Schlage website.

This product has worked out perfectly. I have 12 Schlage Deadbolt Cylenders, and this kit has all the parts I would ever need for them. I am no longer paying $13 X 6 each time I need a re-key. There is white plastic tool included that is designed to help remove the inner cylender from it's outer housing without having top pins and springs come out. I had expected this to line up a little better, but it does work, you just have to be a little carefull. It comes with a really nice very illustrated Rekeying Quick Start Binder. As per usual my binder was damaged in shipping by �鶹��. We have all come to expect shipping damages from �鶹��. There is also a DVD. The Rekeying Kit itself is exactly what I needed!

I'm super handy but even a novice DIY person could do it. I got this bigger kit because I also plan on getting some padlocks that are compatible and I have a rental suite that occasionally will need to be rekeyed. Yup, it is expensive but you get a LOT of pins and tools to get the job done.

First, what is this kit for and what is the difference between this kit and the other numbered Schlage kits?
This kit 40-132:
is mostly for servicing retail Schlage locks. Minus the tweezers mentioned below it provides everything you would typically need for servicing/rekeying your schalge locks and maybe then some.

Schlage 715393 Pin Tumbler Keying Kit/Schlage 40-134 Keying Kit
is the little brother of the 40-132 kit. At first, it seems like it would be the preferred buy for most people but, it is missing the parts you will need when you blow out a lock (trust me it happens to everyone). Also missing are crucial tools you will need such as a "plug follower", the "pin tweezers" mentioned below and most importantly the "Schlage M540-056 Cylinder Cap Remover" with the last one alone being rather expensive. When you add just the needed tools (and I mean need not just want) the price will go over what the 40-132 is typically listed as.

SCHLAGE 40-133 Commercial 40133 Home Secure Keying Kit
Is similar to the 40-132 kit except the parts for the electronic locks in the 132 kit have been substituted for parts needed to create master keys which may not be an available option on non-commercial locks. It is a good kit but a bit more pricey to the extent I wonder if it may be cheaper to buy the missing master key parts to add to a 40-132 kit. The kit however does have pin tweezers included. the one thing missing I would like to see in the kit are spool pins. despite this, I could see myself recommending this kit to someone who is absolutely sure they will never use electronic locks.

Schlage 40-119 Pin Kit, Steel
this kit has me scratching my head as I can't account for why the price is so high when it appears to be very similar and also a bit inferior to the 40-133 kit. the parts contained are similar to the parts in the 40-133 but missing several items. Among the missing items are T pins, spool pins, t pin springs, construction balls, drivers, and removable caps. it however does have one thing the other does not; the blocking pin 505 Everest, which can be purchased alone for less than $10 for 100 of them at the moment. if there is anyone out there who knows why there is such a large price spike for this kit in comparison to the other please let me know.

Any of the numbered Schlage brand kits above provide parts of locksmith quality.

As for the review specifically on the 40-132 kit
Second for those new to rekeying locks please do not expect this product to fully teach you. It does have some directions but in reality, you need to do a good deal of research to get a better grip on the subject especially if you want to utilize all the parts available in the kit. This being said I find this is pretty much true for any similar rekying kits found available on the internet and I get the impression that the provided instructions and QR code-linked videos provide more directional info than most if not all other sets.

About the kit itself: It provides multiples of all the parts to service many Schlage locks to the point you most likely will never need more assuming you are just attending to your own home. However, if you ever do run out and need more of a particular part the kit makes it easy to identify the parts ID number to order more. Over all the 40-132 is a very nice kit that I do not think I will regret buying. I have already used it to rekey 12 locks (6 deadbolts and six knobs with locks) with parts in the kit available for many more.

Being a bit of a perfectionist I always find ways that products can be improved. This said please understand that what I point out below does not mean in any way that the product is inferior as it is not in any way so. Some of the things I am pointing out I myself do not consider to be an issue but others may find it to be.

1. The first one I do have to say shame on Schlage, as pin tweezers should be part of the kit. (To schlage: charge a couple more dollars and provide it.) You will need them at some point assuming you do rekey more than one lock as you will likely accidentally blow out a lock cylinder at some point and have to put it back together. When a blowout occurs the tiny spring-loaded parts will be shot across the room never to be found again. The parts you may need are in the kit, but the tool you very much need to use these parts is not. The fact the parts (top pins, springs and caps)are in the kit but the much-needed tool to use them is not there does not make any sense to me. (pin tweezers can be purchased on �鶹�� separately). Why do I not reduce the star rating because of this? I do not want to give the impression that you could do better with another kit as I believe it is still the best option available.

2. A minor thing and also related to number one; there are no instructions for utilizing T, spool, and top pins much less how to put back together a blown lock. Despite there being plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do this, considering video instructions are given for the other parts I would suggest Schlage include these instructions in the QR link as it will increase customer satisfaction.

3. Some complain about the plug follower being made of plastic instead of aluminum. I prefer it to be plastic as there is a reason for it to be plastic. Plastic will not mar or scratch the internal parts of a lock. I would prefer to have a 2nd plastic plug follower as there were some occasions when I realized too late that I put the plug follower in backward and will not be able to remove it without either blowing out the lock due to the tapered edge tool on one side or having a second follower to reorientate the follower in the right direction.

4. Some complain the pins are not color-coded to help identify the pin. I agree to a certain degree, but color coding unfortunately is not universal in the industry meaning a specific color from one company could mean something completely different for another. So until the color codes are universal they have no meaning to me as it can lead to misidentifying a pin.

5. The last one I hesitate to mention. The price. The only reason why I mention it is more so to justify paying more for a Schlage branded kit rather than a generic kit with parts meant to fit Schlage locks. This being said what is your security and peace of mind worth to you? I choose to pay more to be sure the pins are milled to the correct specs and are of quality material. If Schlage is looking to reduce costs to offer it at a lower price the first thing I would consider is using a thick plastic case instead of the metal case. I like the metal case I am just not sure if I would elect to pay for it if plastic is offered for a good deal less. Still, I will not have to worry about the case being cracked as it is and this may be a quality choice by Schlage knowing that many of their customers are businesses that want the more durable case. This being considered I can not fault this.

This is a comprehensive kit that makes changing locks very easy for someone with moderate mechanical skills, good attention to detail, and an ability to follow directions. Although not cheap, the kit pays for itself the first time you're able to avoid calling a locksmith to change a lock or having to buy a new knob (especially a commercial-grade one). I recommend it highly.

A couple minor points:

* Some other reviewers have lamented the lack of comprehensive instructions with the kit, but they are available -- just go to
http://consumer.schlage.com/Project%20Documents/P513-325.pdf or do a web search for "Schlage Rekeying Manual" All the information you need is in there.

* I agree with others who've said that the kit really should include a set of lock pin tweezers; if you don't have those around, you can make do with regular tweezers or forceps, but they're not going to work as well as a dedicated tool for the purpose. Then again, if you follow the instructions at the bottom of page 38 in the rekeying manual, you probably won't need tweezers at all.

* If your local hardware store can't provide new keys (discarded from new locks whose pin combinations are changed to be part of a matched set of locks), you can order them on the web from various merchants such as
