- Reviewed in Canada on August 7, 2024Eloisa James has done it again. This Wilde Series is one of my favorites. Somehow, Eloisa James manages to capture chemistry so well. I don’t know how she writes it.
This book is about Betsy and Jeremy. Jeremy has come back from war with PTSD and Betsy, due to her scandalous mother, has decided to be the most proper lady. Together, they learn to be themselves and that there’s nothing wrong with them.
This book is adorable and sweet, there’s something about the Wilde family that is just so endearing. Again the chemistry between Betsy and Jeremy is just so on point. Somehow, she creates these real characters with real feelings, and you can feel the emotion float off the page.
I will read anything Eloise James writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars De "Wildes" hebben hun reputatie verdiend

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love the Wildes!
Verified PurchaseFINAL DECISION: This book was just amazing. I loved Betsy's strength and gumption. I adored the deep emotional center of Jeremy. These two were incredible together, and I especially enjoyed that their story was much deeper than the blurb would suggest.
THE STORY: Lady Betsy Wilde lived under the feared approbation of her mother's infidelity and scandalous behavior. In exchange, she has become the "perfect" lady and has rejected a number of eligible gentlemen's proposals. Feeling constrained by her "perfect" facade, Betsy wants some adventure and she makes a bet with a family friend to get her chance. Lord Jeremy Roden returned from war in the colonies a changed man and no longer the gentleman he was before. His interactions with Betsy are also changing him, but does he want her for himself or should he convince her to accept a duke who would her perfect match.
OPINION: I've really been enjoying the Wildes of Lindow Castle series. The characters are passionate but reasonable and intensely sweet. There is something loving and heartwarming about these characters. The books give me a warm heart and always leaves me with a smile. These Wildes love in a big and full way and I love them back.
Betsy is the oldest daughter in the family and she suffers from the actions of her mother. She knows that others are looking at her to find traces of her mother's scandalous behavior and Betsy is determined to give others nothing to latch onto. But playing a part has been wearing on Betsy who hasn't been able to indulge in her "wild" side. What I really loved about Betsy is that in a time of restrictions upon women, Betsy has found a way to be a powerful woman. She has made a place for herself where she won't accept limitations but finds ways to subvert them.
Jeremy is her brother North's friend. Returning after war in the colonies, Jeremy suffers from the effects of war. While he thinks himself not a gentleman any longer because of his experiences, his interactions with Betsy are truly the essence of being a gentleman -- if a naughty one. I loved his journey in this book. Betsy grounds Jeremy in the world that he felt disconnected to after his war experiences.
Betsy and Jeremy are just perfect together from the beginning. Their banter and bickering was funny and sexy. These two are such a good match that only their fears can keep them apart.
I loved this book. I cared about the characters and they felt like real people with fears and foibles and mistakes. I really like that these are good people and the book allows them to work out their personal issues and find a way to one another.
WORTH MENTIONING: I love this family. I'm hoping for books for more of the siblings.
CONNECTED BOOKS: SAY NO TO THE DUKE is the fourth book in the Wildes of Lindow Castle. The romance here is self-contained and thus it can be read as a standalone, but I think this book is much better if a reader is familiar with the passionate Wilde family and the circumstances which confront Betsy.
STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.
NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to assist in preparation of this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Say Yes to Romance!
Verified PurchaseThis is a full length historical romance book in the Wilde series by Eloisa James. It is the most recent book in the series an can be read as a stand alone title but you will miss a lot of connective information if you skip a head. It is adult themed with some mild cussing, adventure, and steamy scenes. It is well written the storyline smooth and no editing problems. There are no cliffhangers, although there is a small set up for the next book, no cheating, and always an HEA. I was NOT paid for this honest review.
Lord Jeremy is struggling with his past war experiences. His guilt is overwhelming over losing his platoon. He takes some time out in the country huddled in the bosom of the Wilde family. Boredom lends to outrageous behavior but everyone is on to him he needs caring people and time to heal. Watching Lady Betsy play billiards is Jeremy’s greatest past time until she receives a marriage proposal from a Duke right in front of him. Spurned into action Jeremy doesn’t know if he should encourage or discourage the match, since he is in no condition to take a wife. Betsy loves billiards, her family, and her best friend Lord Jeremy, although he always seems drunk and will rarely play her at billiards. Betsy vowed when the was fourteen that she would not follow in her mother’s scandalous footsteps and would be the most proper, sought after, and perfect wife that she can be. Unfortunately she was to successful and by her second season she has had more proposals than all her friends and family combined. Betsy wants a convenient simple marriage with no drama and certainly no bouts of passion, so when the duke proposes she should accept he would be the perfect calm and dutifully husband, but she just can’t make her self accept. It seems Betsy is her mother’s daughter after all destined to be over passionate about men. Will she ever find a man she can say yes too?
This was not my favorite Wilde book, but it was good. I am not fond of books that use reasons to curb behavior or important choices in life based on ridiculous fears. I also do not like when the male lead in the story is determined never to marry from the beginning. It’s a very tired storyline, so I wasn’t‘ to real thrilled with either lead character in this book, but the author did a good job of moving the story along in a better direction that ended up being very sweet and romantic. Ms. James is great at making you feel the electricity, fireworks, and connection in a couples budding relationship within the confines of the historical genre. This book was worth the price and the read. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than 5 stars.
Verified PurchaseBrilliantly written as ever. Betsy has cemented herself as my new favorite Wilde, and the novel possibly as my new favorite by Eloisa James. So much more than what’s hinted in the blurb, and a must read.
