These are a decent water soluble set of crayons. If the bougie Neocolor II's are out of your price range, these are a good substitute (I own both full sets; not totally equal in quality, but both equally useful). I just love them for mixed media projects. BUT- I actually found & bought them at DeSerres. Instead of these 24 crayons at 40$, I got the full 36 set for only 31$. Rip off much? It certainly pays to shop around!
I love these. They work as advertised. I can't compare them as Caran D'Ache Neo Colour as they are too expensive for me, but as someone who is knowledgable in watercolour paint, this is an affordable alternative.
I really like how this product looks after I apply a very slight amount of water. Suggest practicing applying lightly at first and using the smallest amount of water to spread colour around so you can see the different intensities. Surfaces like playing cards should be sanded first as they have a slight laminate to them. I applied a few random strips of music sheet and then applied different colours of crayon before I added a slight bit of water. Turned out very pretty. A great effect to use as a background, too.
Watched a tutorial where the artist used watercolor sticks primarily to make marks, then a different artist tried them out just using a wet brush right on them, both ways worked for different effects. The second artist also made marks then tried to blend, not so great. Then she cut a bit off and placed in a half pan, used like tube paint. Pretty good. I have a couple Daniel Smith sticks based on the first tutorial, I like adding marks and lines to some pieces. Organizing my workroom getting ready for holiday shows, and I found these Sargent “crayons” which I had forgotten I had, so I decided to give them a try. Used the wet brush right on them, on the side of the point, worked brilliantly. And once I was done, just set them down and waited a bit for them to dry, and then back in the box. I was able to blend colors just by holding the two crayons at once. The Daniel Smith are pretty pricey compared to these, so I’d call this a win. I may not color with them which is what I thought was how to use them, but I can see these being very handy for instance to travel with, pretty much no mess, only had to clean my brushes as usual. Highly recommend.
