Difficult to Get a Good Seal

I ordered this brake Bleeder kit for use in my home workshop.

The unit came packed nicely with a variety of Master Cylinder reservoir caps to mate with various vehicle fluid reservoirs, the fluid canister with integrated pump and attached fluid hose with shut-off valve and quick connector for the specific vehicle fluid reservoir, fluid catch bottle with universal type rubber bleed screw connector, fluid canister fill cap wrench and various other parts to use in this kit.

I had read a number of reviews for this type of kit and their potential problems and issues so I wanted to ensure this unit operated satisfactorily with water before filling with brake fluid and using a real-world brake bleed. I am glad I did this exercise because the unit I received had some potential issues.

First, it was difficult to get pressure inside the fluid canister by use of the integrated hand pump. I disassembled the handle pump and found it completely devoid of any lubricant on the rubber washer of the pump. After lubing the seal, I was able to get a pressure build in the canister using that pump with just a few pump cycles.

Second, I found it difficult to get a secure seal at the brake fluid canister fill cap even when using the provided wrench to tighten that cap. I had as little as 8 psi pressure in the canister and still was noticing leaks. I changed out the cap seal with the spare seal provided in the kit and it was better but still difficult to get a solid seal at that location (see picture 1 green arrows). The main collar on the fluid canister (see picture 2) also showed some signs of small leaks in the area of the green arrows, but it was significantly less than the canister fill cap area. The main collar and fill caps cannot be tightened more secure than present without causing damage to the unit. Because of these leaks and difficulty getting a secure seal, I am hesitant to fill this canister with caustic brake fluid and undertake a brake bleed procedure without having someone keep a close eye on the procedure. That kind of defeats the purpose of a one person brake bleed kit!

One other minor gripe I have with this unit is the fact the fluid catch bottle does not have a vent of any kind (picture 3). I am pretty sure this will present some issues when using or at least require loosening the cap to relieve pressure when performing a bleed. An alternative would be to drill a small vent hole in the cap but then the integrity of keeping caustic fluid inside the catch bottle is compromised.

Despite the cautions I noted above, this unit seems well made and I think it can be a usable tool in the shop. I just will need to decide if I am willing to proceed with a helper and become brave enough to try it out with brake fluid. As of this writing, I am hesitant to do that and will probably use my existing tools to undertake future brake bleed work.

I will update this review if I have additional information (positive or negative) and decide to use this unit with caustic brake fluid inside.
