Weird... �鶹�� is lumping in reviews of the Hoffman/Gray-vs-EU double-45-rpm edition with the Super Deluxe Box edition. Just got my box set version, and... ROSEBUD!!!!!!! FINALLY, the promotional film is commercially available in COMPLETE FORM! Atop this, the 33-rpm LP included with the set (at least my copy) was mastered by... Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman! True, half of this was previously released (the original album and Disc 5, "Sessions, Outtakes,..."), but I'm still glad I bought it! Rediscover the album with a copy of co-producer Ken Caillat's book with Steven Stiefel, "Making Rumours"... I'm having excellent evenings lately with both!

I am one of those few people who have listened to both the "EU" and "US" 45-rpm editions of this album... because I accidentally bought both. And I am also someone who posted LONG, DETAILED comparisons between both editions, my German-pressed Vinyl Revival edition from the '90s, and a Ken Perry "Mastered at Capitol" copy from back in the early days... on the Steve Hoffman site. I've yet to receive any feelings of animosity from anyone else on the list, despite being the newbie with only a modest hi-end system (Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Shure V15 Type IV cartridge and JICO SAS shibata stylus, through a ROTEL stereo system into PSB Alpha bookshelf speakers)... and I did that that I would have found the EU 45-rpm double set to be acceptable, had I not heard the Hoffman version.

It may come to a matter of taste and personal preference between the two editions. But ever since I heard a reference recording of Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love" (the same track pressed at 45 rpm on one side, and 33 rpm on the other), I believe I know what to listen for on a 45-rpm edition that just wouldn't be on a 33-rpm: increased room detail, space between instruments, and hi-end clarity. These details all appear on most of the tracks on the Hoffman/Grey version (except for one of my most favorite tracks, "You Make Loving Fun"). I'm surprised to hear that the EU copy is considered to be "warmer", when to my ears there isn't really any absence of warmth to the Hoffman/Grey version. But again...

To me, the Hoffman/Grey mastered 2-LP set (identifiable as having rounded corners on its shrinkwrap sticker, and the words "Pressed at Pallas" at the bottom) has the traits I have come to expect from 45-rpm versions.

The "EU" edition (now rumoured to have been mastered by Bernie Grundman, if I recall correctly) barely stands out from the other LP editions I mentioned, though it is no slouch: it just doesn't stand out to my ears.

So which edition is �鶹�� now shipping? The first copy I received from amazon.ca was the EU version (unannounced as such). Rumour now has it �鶹��.COM is shipping the Hoffman/Grey version (which has been confirmed by a few on the Hoffman forum who'd pre-ordered it). Did �鶹��.CA also get Hoffman/Grey copies? If you get a copy with a square-cornered shrinkwrap sticker missing the words "Pressed at Pallas" at the bottom of said sticker, I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to return it or risk opening it to see if you'll be satisfied.
