“It’s a hell of a story.” —The New York Times
“A stunning and revelatory memoir.” —Oprah Daily
From MSNBC anchor and instant New York Times bestselling author Katy Tur, a gripping memoir about journalism, family legacy, and personal struggles, recounting her volatile childhood, the burden of legacy, and her climb to success in a demanding career.
When a box from her mother showed up on Katy Tur’s doorstep, months into the pandemic and just as she learned she was pregnant with her second child, she didn’t know what to expect. The box contained thousands of hours of video—the work of her pioneering helicopter journalist parents. They grew rich and famous for their aerial coverage of Madonna and Sean Penn’s secret wedding, the Reginald Denny beating in the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and O.J. Simpson’s notorious run in the white Bronco. To Tur, these family videos were an inheritance of sorts, and a reminder of who she was before her own breakout success as a reporter.
In Rough Draft, Tur writes about her eccentric and volatile California childhood, punctuated by forest fires, earthquakes, and police chases—all seen from a thousand feet in the air. She recounts her complicated relationship with a father who was magnetic, ambitious, and, at times, frightening. And she charts her own survival from local reporter to globe-trotting foreign correspondent, running from her past. Tur also opens up for the first time about her struggles with burnout and impostor syndrome, her stumbles in the anchor chair, and her relationship with CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil (who quite possibly had a crazier childhood than she did).
Intimate and captivating, Rough Draft explores the gift and curse of family legacy, examines the roles and responsibilities of the news, and asks the question: To what extent do we each get to write our own story?

- Reviewed in Canada on September 7, 2022Verified PurchaseI loved the author's sense of adventure and openness to life itself. She's authentic, reflective, quirky, perfectly imperfect and courageous. I couldn't put this 5-star book down. Best book I've read in years!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truth Teller:
Verified PurchaseKaty, You have done it one more time, this book was excellent. I think the world of you to be able to sit down and write this book about your family and your history. I have contemplated it, however I just don't know. I grew up like you with the belts and also the apple tree switches and if you think a belt hurts, ask someone about the tree switches. My dad choose me to be the so called scapegoat and I was always closer to my mother. So I know a bit about what you went through as far as that goes. My dad would choose to call me out for no good reason in front of others and do things to make me sad and want to hide. He is still living at 92, and I have forgiven him for all that he has done, even though he still wants nothing to do with me, I don't want to go to my grave and not have forgiven him. It took me years and years and you have time to do this. I am almost 69 and just did it at the end of last year. They are of a cult and so they still won't speak to me, and I knew this going in, however decided that all of the sadness didn't need to rest on my shoulders for the rest of my life. I want to tell you, forgiveness takes a hundred lbs off you instantly if not sooner. I had heard that but I could feel it. I have a whole different attitude about the whole thing now. I realize he has issues coming out of his you know, but they are not mine anymore to worry about. I also know that I don't keep getting those thoughts about all that stuff that happened back then over and over in my head, it is all gone. There is only one thing I can say, and that is he was raised by parents who had too many children and didn't do a very good job with any of them. Although he did graduate, he was the only one and he did have a great career, he was the only one. He was a braggart and showy and I didn't care for that, and I am just as glad that I could say I am sorry and then not have to start over with him. Your mom was a good person going along with all of that, however my mom did the same and I think most women back then did whatever they were told to. Katy, you are on e of my very favorites and the first journalist that I have ever read their book and that was your first one. I have come a long way now, I have read more journalist books than I haven't and that is all to do with Mr. Trump and his crazy making sickness. I worry about all the things you do and I think we all do. Its only natural after that 4 years, and especially when I knew what he was like before he even got in, and had to count from day one, it seemed like 100 yrs by the time he was gone. Then he tried to stop it and I about had a stroke, how can someone stop something like that, well, now I know. You need to keep writing and stay on the air too, you are such a truth teller just as I am, and you also have the greatness of a wonderful author. When I saw that you were writing this second book I just couldn't wait to get my hands on it. This one was just as great as the first one, better as we didn't have to read as much about you know, I will talk about your dad every day of the week before I will talk about the one who wants a second shot at ruining our democracy. I hope and pray that you and dad will one day work it all out, I didn't think that my father and I would, but we did and so it can be done. It takes years of soul searching and first yourself for thinking any of it had to do with you and that something was wrong with you, and then realizing your father and what he went through in his life and what can be done to make it right again. I wish you all the best and keep those babies safe and happy and hubby too. Thanks for a second chance to read on of your beautiful books. It was wonderful. If any of you out there are trying to decide to read this book, please pick it up and read it, Katy's dad was known and you may not know that. The other day someone on a different channel had the OJ tape and was talking about it, but nothing was said about who did it!!!! Katy will tell you about her dad's profession and her mom's too and even hers, she started young!! Laughing. This read is well worth it and a blessing to us all who love her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest and Insightful and...TMI
Verified PurchaseGood, crisp read. She's one of the good ones on TV news, and I think her candor shines through both her broadcasts and this memoir. I could have been spared some of the gynecological details, but I get why it's there, and that's a minor quibble. She's funny and generous to a fault. I'll continue to read whatever Katy writes. Thanks for sharing your experiences in such a candid fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, Intimate and Daring
Verified PurchaseEven when I intended to read ( & bought) Katy Tur’s “hot-off—the press” 2022 Memoir “Rough Draft”, becoming a 1st time Grandma diverted my focus, and with tears in my eyes, on Memorial Day 2024, I just wrapped up reading her Acknowledgements in a very moving journey, her book of sometimes jaw-dropping honesty. Very well written & powerful still, in terms of family disfunction and continued concerns regarding political strife and the health of our Country. Brava Katy Tur! Wishing you all the best being a new Mom, wife and your continued pursuit of honest reporting in journalism. C. Clark

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional, Captivating, Funny and Sad
Verified PurchaseI read the first review posted here, the only one here, after seeing Katy Tur interviewed about this book yesterday, the day it was released. I could not believe the review was an accurate description, so I bought the Kindle edition to find out. 31% in - it is full of emotion, wild and horrifying and unexpected events, and fascinating people and information. I am so glad I am reading it. I have faith the rest will be great, too. But if not, I’ll revise my enthusiasm. Now 100% complete. The revision: no, it is not funny. It is too intense, with no happily ever after, to be delightfully funny, although there certainly is some fun. Yes, 5 Stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Verified PurchaseYou get the feeling reading Katy Tur’s memoir that, based on the results of her best-seller about covering the Donald Trump campaign, she had a commitment to her publisher that had to be fulfilled. So she wrote a memoir. But the problem with memoirs written in mid-life is you really haven’t done enough living to produce one that is truly compelling. That is true of this book. The first half is the most interesting, where she takes on her childhood with her interesting and somewhat crazy parents. But after that she segues into dating, marrying, and having children and it becomes prosaic.
