This book y’all. I am foaming at the freaking mouth over Briony and Toven. Slow burn at its finest, gobbling up every little crumb we are given. And the world building, the emotion, the character development, truly a masterpiece from start to finish.
Contrary to my normal reviews, I will not be including a synopsis in this one as I feel this book is one that you need to go into blind, whether you’ve read The Auction on A03 or not. This book is an emotional roller coaster that has you begging for more. Definitely some hard topics so check your trigger warnings as always because those are there for a reason. And remember that this is book one of a trilogy so this is only the beginning.
I haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I finished it, pretty sure I even dreamed about it last night. Every detail was crafted so beautifully within the main story, along with the flashbacks to years past filling in some of the gaps. I absolutely loved Briony, her cunning, her intelligence, her compassion. I can’t want to see how much she grows as a character.
And Toven, gosh. I feel like we’ve really only seen glimpses of who he truly is as a person, and I’m crossing my fingers that at some point we will get a POV from him because the infuriation I felt at his coldness without a scrap of explanation, gah. Even so, I’m obsessed, and I will accept every little morsel of affection he gives.
The secondary characters are phenomenal as well, I definitely hope to see more of them in the rest of the series. The camaraderie between the girls at the auction, and how that developed further even though they were separated. I smell a revolution coming and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.
Overall, I need the next book like right now and I am so excited for the special edition to be displayed on my shelf!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 13, 2025The war is over and the dark forces have won - princess Briony Rosewood and the remaining citizens of Evermore have been captured and auctioned off to the people of Bomard, their rival nation. Her brother is dead, her friends split up, and her childhood crush… purchased her.
The story goes between present day and the past, providing a good foundation of backstory throughout the novel to prepare the reader for what comes next. This provides helpful context, and helps the reader build an emotional bond to characters who are talked about in the present day, but seldom seen. Julie Soto does a great job of building the world, explaining how the magic works, and not overwhelming the reader with all the information at once. Instead, we are introduced to certain topics and explanations only as it becomes relevant, which really helped with the flow of the novel.
Once I felt up to speed on the inner-workings of magic in this realm, and the tensions between Evermore and Bomard, I had already developed a fairly emotional bond to Briony. I loved that even from the beginning, the story felt both unique and comfortable. While not necessarily groundbreaking, it was creative and inspiring, and kept me intrigued. I always had a list of questions about what would happen next - and it was hard to predict.
There were many nuances as we were introduced to essential characters, but only slowly learned what we needed to know about them. Briony’s curious mind helped keep the reader enthralled about what each person’s role was in the bigger picture of the Bomardi line, and who was loyal to it.
The relationship building was particularly good. We saw it first with how connected she was to her people, and to her brother, Rory. While their childhood could have driven a wedge between the twins, their relationship was stronger due to their hardships - because he saw her value, and made sure she saw it too.
“When they were very young, he used to say that they were answering the questions together, as a team”
We next saw the relationship grow between Briony and her captor, Toven Hearst. Throughout the book, we see the two as classmates, as enemies, and as captor/captive. The slowest of slow burns - politics mean that facing any feelings would risk the safety of many.
If you’re expecting a nice, magical romance, you’re in the wrong place. To me, the romance was secondary to the rivalry between worlds, the other relationships, and the plot to save Evermore. This is a fantasy through and through, with dark themes of captivity, human trafficking, non-consent, and s*xual humiliation. Definitely read your trigger warnings before jumping into this. That said, I thought they were handled very well and I was tied into every moment, desperate to learn more.
This was the longest audiobook I’ve listened to, but I was so impressed that I never once felt bored or like the story wasn’t moving. There was always something to unravel and explore. I’m completely hooked and eager for book two.
I only found out after reading that this was adapted from a fanfiction, but honestly, I never would’ve known if I hadn’t Googled it - it truly didn’t feel like one. If you love fantasy, adventure, and dark, brooding men… you will love Rose in Chains.
“She stared…listening to the echo in her ears of him calling her family”
I really think my only qualm with this book was how heavily it is marketed as a romance - I didn’t think the romance was the primary story, nor do I think it was developed enough to be considered the genre of the book. I would barely categorize this as romantasy… but I really hope book two changes that for me, because I can’t wait to see more of these two. In the end, the adventure and the mystery is really what captivated me, not the love story.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2025Verified PurchaseWow!! Rose in Chains totally caught me by surprise and I’m OBSESSED! I’m positive this will be one of my favourite books of the year.
Not having read the fanfic similar material, I didn’t really know what to expect going in, and I can imagine how it was changed from the fanfic, but this book and its characters and world is so compelling and stands entirely on its own.
The world and story setup is so gross and gave me handmaids-tale-jesabels level ick-vibes, but I was COMPELLED and had to know more the entire time. Strong characters, world building and magic and the setup is so well done.
Briony is such a strong likeable FMC and Troven so strong and mysterious as the MMC. Countless times I found myself almost wishing we had a Troven POV, but it’s nice to have him be mysterious and unknown as well.
This book is sloooow burn, but forced proximity of like to hate to lovers is one of my favourite tropes. I can already tell this trilogy is going to take off and be a new fav of the bookstagram world all on its own! And if the above doesn’t sell you, I finished the book and immediately preordered it!
Thanks so much to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the arc, all thoughts are mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love everything about this book
Verified PurchaseI was a huge fan of the fanfiction the auction and I loved every page of this book. I felt with the characters and loved the new magic system she created for this story to work outside its origin universe. Making it a original only made it better and I can’t wait for the second book to be published.

Verified PurchaseI loved this book! Even more than I expected!
J. Soto's writing just does something to you - you get so hooked, completely consumed by the story and addicited to it all.
The plot was heavy, so many characters, so many things happened, and yet you feel like you're just there with them, going through the same pain (or happiness). And it's a veeeeeery slow burn, so be prepared for all the deliciousness of it.
Brilliant writing, captivating plot, amazing characters (whom I can't stop thinking about), I cannot wait till the next book comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read!
Verified PurchaseI want to preface this review by saying I could NOT. PUT. THIS. BOOK. DOWN.
Another one of my highly anticipated reads for 2025 and it deeeeelivered. This book kept pace the entire time and I just simply had to know what was going to happen. The flashbacks were spaced out and integrated perfectly and helped tie the present events together emotionally. The dangling of romantic encounters between Briony and Toven were like nectar-of-the-gods type scraps to feed my starved soul. Just when I thought I'd get that sweet relief, it was pulled away from me. A+ slow burn. Plot was super intriguing. The political scheming and power hungry characters kept the story unexpected. I thought the concept of the magic system was original and intriguing.
Of course, as with any fantastic read in a series, I will be tormented with another year of waiting for the next installment. But I know it will be way worth the wait!
