- Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2024Verified PurchaseI've read almost all his books and have found that this is certainly my most favourite. It's beautifully written and it's one that I have read so many times, that this is the reason I had to buy a new copy.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 28, 2023Verified PurchasePaolo Coelho is guided by spirit to have written such profound books. I’m always inspired and thoughtful after finishing one of these reads. They are worth reading again and again, always finding a new message reflective of our current stage of life.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 23, 2023Verified PurchaseLike other Coelho books, "By the River Pedra...Wept," is about human experience. Unike "The Alchemist," "By the River Piedra..." was a tedious book to read, as the main character, Pilar, tediousy goes back iand forth in her mind as to what decision to make - "Should I or shouldn't I?
In the last quarter of the book, the reading smooths out.
In actual fact, Coelho is depicting human being's struggle between the [analytic + primitive] brain with the soul. Towards the end, the soul begins to take charge and the reading smoothens.
In North America, especially, our souls are so covered up that we struugles just as Pilar did. If we rediscoverd our souls and learned to release it, our lives would smoothen out, too.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 26, 2002I read the Alchemist and I really liked it, so I figured this book would be another moving experience. I was disappointed a third of the way in, and remained that way for the rest of the book. I never once felt attached to either of the characters. The love that unfolds in the story seems a bit empty. These people are apparently connected through a lovely childhood, but *why* is their bond so special? The book says little more than "they had a lovely childhood together" and we're expected to just take the author's word for it. It's the same with her transformation in the days she spends with him. Her life is changed by his influence, but why? Did it really only take a change of scenery? Has she really never thought of some of the things he's discovered? Could she have just fallen in love with anyone who brought her out of her banal existence? I felt like as these events were happening, I wasn't being brought along for the ride. I was merely taking the author's word for it and reading a summarization. Their love meant nothing to me because I couldn't see why she wanted him over anyone else, and vice versa. Without real purpose and depth, love stories like this become fluff. I think with twice the content and detail, I would have felt much more of a connection to the material. I like a lot of the things Coelho has to say (it's still a better story than I could write) and I'm definitely going to read the rest of his books -- this one just wasn't for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still reeling..
Verified PurchaseI have read most of Paulo's books after a special friend bought me "The Alchemist" as a gift. I dont read his books like I do my other favourite authors. I like to savour Paulo's work. I like to give myself a night to absorb and take in his words. In other words I force myself to put it down after reading for an hour or so..otherwise it would be devoured (and sadly over with) all too soon. I have never left a review for a book before but I have to say this was one of the most moving stories I have ever read. Perhaps the timing was of importance to me re rediscovering faith but I can honestly say its both the saddest and happiest books I have read. I was crying for almost an hour after finishing it this afternoon.. I didnt want it to be over. I love Paulo's work. I love the food for thought. Only 3 of his books left to read. If you like his work - this is a must.
