- Reviewed in Canada on January 9, 2019Verified PurchaseI’ve been a big time Commodore 64 fan since my youth. The built-in game selection is not the best—there are only about 5 games worth playing, in my opinion—but the ability to download other game ROMS and play them from a USB stick more than makes up for that.
For me, the BASIC editor is worth the price of admission alone. I learned to program on that old editor and the fun of once again writing even the most rudimentary programs in two-tone blues is off the charts.
The one drawback is the interface joystick. In a word, it 'sucks'! I ordered a pair of USB gamepads that were recommended on a website and a powered USB hub. Everything works just great together. The button mapping on the gamepads is a little wonky and takes some getting used to, but they make gameplay on certain games much easier. I ended up re-wiring one of the controllers to make the button mapping more intuitive. Links for those items are below.

If you’re looking for some ‘out-of-the-box’ 8-bit gaming, I wouldn’t recommend it. As I said, there are only a few games worth playing. But if you’re looking to recreate some ‘80s nostalgia and are willing to put in a bit of work—and a few more bucks—to do so, by all means, pick one of these up. You won’t be disappointed.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2019Verified PurchaseI was excited to finally be able to play my favorite C64 games again and relive my childhood moments but I had to do a lot of searching and watching of youtube vids to figure out a few things.
I am glad it does have BASIC and you can type commands as well.
This machine was rather frustrating in the beginning, but after I went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the newest firmware update onto a USB stick, THEN things became awesome and worked a lot better.
With that being said, here are a few items I recommend purchasing with the mini.
-USB keyboard (with number pad) as the keyboard on the mini is fake and non-functional and some games can be played via number pad after updating.
-USB HUB with 3-4 ports
-Adapter to plug in the micro-usb power cable into the wall (as it does not come with one, just the cord, I just used an extra one from my cell phone)
-Longer micro-usb cable (optional but recommended)
-USB gamepad (USB SNES controllers work great) but most wired USB game pads will work and are more comfortable than the clunky provided joystick (which is too tall in my opinion)
-USB stick formatted in FAT32 (For downloading of roms/games and updates from abandonware sites and archives) 2-4GB is all you really need
One downside is that I am still trying to figure out a work-around for my personal games that use more than one "disk" or "Side."
I highly recommend doing some reading and research online and on YouTube for answers. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future update.
Overall I love this little thing and there are workarounds with issues, but if you are debating or are completely new to the C64, I would wait until Dec 2019 when they are planning on releasing the newest version which is full size with a working keyboard, and hopefully has more upgrades to the firmware.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 1, 2019Verified PurchaseI forgot just how good the C64 was. It had some amazing games on it and this box has a couple of my favorites on there (Paradroid, Uridium and the Jump Man games) . It's missing a lot of games as well of course, but you can't get every game, everyone ever liked on there of course - that is unless you copy them onto a USB stick and you can play the games off the USB stick on the C64.
Controller is a bit average, but that might be age on my part and been used to using joy pads for the past 30 years, but again, I've been told you can also use certain joy pads with it as well.
Is it worth it when you can just as easy download an emulator and play that way? Not sure, personal choice I guess, but I've found myself playing a lot more than the emulators .

- Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2021Verified Purchase(1) Full disclosure: I did review this on youtube…that probably biases me in some way.
(2) Yes, I tested it with the CURRENT software updates (2021)…and it's still really bad ("tragically flawed").
(3) The basic premise of this system is that it will be C64 software made easy…but it is NOT easy…you will waste a ton of time and effort getting things to work, and currently (2021) you'll still be dealing with a ton of bugs (e.g., the music not working properly, even for built-in games, a serious error!).
(4) Many, many youtube channels give this positive reviews (in terms of software, hardware or both)…and this is basically nostalgia run amok.
(5) Most of the games are hilariously awful, if you can get them to work: this is what most reviewers can't be honest about. Anything that occupies multiple disks/sides… good luck (yeah, even with the 2021 update, they DO NOT work on my C64 mini).
(6) A very small number of video games have excellent versions on the C64 (but within this small number, not all of them even work on this hardware/software!). As I said in the conclusion to my own youtube video, for example, Arkanoid 2 (not 1) has an excellent version on C64. Does this justify such a novelty purchase? MAYBE.
I am completely willing to admit that "for the right person" this is still a good purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Das weckt Erinnerungen

5.0 out of 5 stars Heaps of the Retro gaming entertainment and great value.
Verified PurchaseReally cool little gadget. It comes with some pretty cool games. But it also supports loading .tap (tape) .d64/d81 (disk images) and .crt (cartridge images) for thousands of games you can find online. Though for some games you will need to read the manual on how to create .cjm files which lets you customize the emulation to make the games work (though most games don't require this). By the way, the manual is excellent.
Let me just get one of the bad things out of the way. The joystick as other reviews have said is as cheap as it gets. Really not conducive to accurate control but it's enough to scratch the itch and experience the c64 at least.
So to really effectively use this device I would recommend upgrading the joystick right away. If you're not sure, this is my setup that I'm pretty happy with:
- A mini USB hub. (2 ports provided are not enough) So a hub with 4 ports should work.
- Logitech G F710 Wireless Gamepad, this controller is wireless and its supported by the C64-mini. It's a quality controller which also works with the PC. So it's versatile.
- a USB thumb drive. An inexpensive USB thumb-drive should work so that you can transfer the games you download with your computer to the C64-mini.
- and a regular USB keyboard. Even though a virtual keyboard is provided, and accessible through the Start button on your controller/joystick. Having an actual physical keyboard is a notable quality of life improvement.
One thing I did not realize before getting the C64-Mini is how vibrant the C64 community is. There are new games being released all the time and there is a huge community of C64 enthusiasts. This little machine has sent me back to my childhood and let me relive some of the coolest gaming moments of my youth.
Furthermore it has intrigued my 10 year old nephew, who I didn't expect would love these 8-bit games as much as he does.
I highly recommend this to anyone either looking to experience the early days of home computer entertainment, or those looking for a retro gaming experience that won't break the bank. If retro games are your thing, C64 has thousands of games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it once you update it to latest OS version & if you are unable to get a MAXI version !
Verified PurchaseIt has 64 classic games which can be expanded upon updating and adding your own games (if you had purchased earlier for the original version). Games are what you can expect from 8 bit generation , along with some surprises & disappointments depending on what one prefers or dislikes !
