Finally, a GOOD controller to replace a worn-out original!

Finally, a GOOD controller to replace a worn-out original!
Wow, I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll start with what I am comparing this to that I have in my posession / have had previously: - A classic N64 controller with a perfect analog stick (Almost fine, but really uncomfortable to use) - A classic N64 controller with a worn-out analog stick (Uncomfortable design of controller, worn out analog sucks) - 2 classic N64 controllers with 2 different aftermarket newly-manufactured stick (both were garbage - grindey, over-sensitive) - 3 separate N64 aftermarket controllers (Cirka, Tomee, and some unbranded one, all of which were garbage. None were grindey, but all of them were hyper-sensitive) All this brings me to this wonder of a controller. Here's everything it has going for it: - No grindey, over-sensitive analog stick. Its smooth, has a nice grip on the top, feels modern, has next to no dead-zone, has excellent precision and sensitivity level. Goldeneye, Quake 1 and 2, Star Fox, Road Rash for example were all fantastic - works well in FPS games and racing games alike. - Controller layout feels comfortable and modern, button positions are more convenient - Bigger C-Buttons are easier to press and feel better - Matte buttons feel nicer / less greasy after use, feel nice and definitive and very nice - Shoulder buttons and triggers are great and well-thought out, and the left bumper comes pre-trimmed from the factory to avoid the bumper-joystick grinding issue of the first batch - D-Pad is satisfactory. A little mushy, but totally usable. - Nice visual appearance / color scheme and molding - Longer-than-original cable makes it possible to sit considerably further away from the console while playing, which is fantastic - The fit and finish of both the controller plug and the expansion slot feel perfect, not overly tight as earlier reports suggested - A genuinely convenient and useful turbo button that came in handy in star fox (you can replace charge shots with insane rapid-fire of your lasers, works super well for certain scenarios) The only downside: - Takes a bit of adjustment for people who have muscle-memory from using the old trident controller, but once you get past that bit of re-learning, it's wonderful. - Transfer pak does not work (though this is universally the case for all aftermarket controllers, and this only affects pokemon stadium). Seriously, this is the controller I have waited for for years for the N64. My only regret is that I haven't bought a second one yet. Kudos, Retrofighters. I hope you stick around and become a mainstay like 8bitdo and Hyperkin.

With the Hori controllers being super expensive and rare, I decided to try out this retrobit controller instead.
I went with the grey as it's slightly cheaper than the see-through coloured variants.

    This is an incredible controller.
It feels comfortable in the hands, buttons are perfect, they feel like the original, and are on point with their response.
The joystick is a godsend from the abomination on the original.
Perfect motion, response and so damn comfy even after long play sessions.
The Cablevision much longer than the original too, so you aren't forced to sit in front of your TV.

I've tested the classic platformers, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, along with many others and even with those tight paths that require absolute precision, it's no problem using this joystick!
And of course having Turbo is always a great feature, making mario party or the infamous Canary-Mary a breeze.

My only complaint is having 2 Z buttons (the triggers)
I found myself ground-pouing when I wanted to spring jump alot due to accidentally tapping it with my right hand.
I think it would have been better to have the Z only on the left side and have the right only have the R trigger, but I eventually got used to it.

Overall I highly reccomend this controller, for the design, quality and great price you cannot go wrong!

If Nintendo had this design originally, I think gamers might have been a bit more receptive to the N64.

The layout of this controller just makes sense when you take modern controllers into consideration. There isn't a single game that I can think of that would suffer any drawbacks from this design. Being able to access both the analog stick and the dpad without having to change grips is a blessing.

That analog stick is just so fluid though. It doesn't feel grindy like the original n64 controllers do (due to the gears). I can't tell if these are hall effect sticks but they seem to perform like them. I can get the full range of movement in Mario 64 from tiptoe to run using 100% of the stick rather than the first 30% from the center like so many other cheap 3rd party controllers - which I had most of back in the day.

No more sore thumb from the stick treads imprinting into your thumbprint either. Sweaty thumbs are also a thing of the past vs. the original slippery sticks. The buttons feel good too, especially the c-buttons. They just seem to work better with my big fingers. Originals are narrow and almost rounded at the top while the Retro Fighters' c-buttons are spaced out a wee bit more, flatter and larger in diameter.

The expansion port is a bit tight. It takes a bit of force to get a memory pak in all the way and it never actually clicks in and the Tremor Pack really struggles to fit in. Not worth deducting anything .

Cord is nice and long if you need it. I tend to drag the console out on the floor so I can hit the reset button though.

It's kind of surprising to see a turbo mode included given the dearth of shooters on N64 and I can't really think of many other games that would benefit, but hey it's there.

I'm definitely going to get at least one more of these in the near future.

These controllers are great. The buttons feel responsive & tactile, rumble/save pack works, control stick has a good sensitivity for aiming in 007 or perfect dark. My only complaint is that the plastic feels cheap/hollow and the control/rumble pak release button has fallen out before. Overall these are very good and I recommend them !
UPDATE - 1 controller has developed a nasty squeak in the right shoulder button and the down arrow on D pad is very unresponsive.. I may disassemble and see if i can repair it.

This controller is fantastic! I've had it for a week now and I like it so much I just ordered a second one. If you are getting this to use with that may flash adaptor thing for the PC then it might not work properly, mine doesn't, but I'm not sure if that's the controller or the PC in all fairness. If your getting it to use with an actual N64 though it works absolutely perfect! The only thing I don't like is the turbo button, but that's because I'm so used to the xbox one controller so sometimes when I try to push start to pause a game the button isn't where I'm expecting it to be and then my thumb will frantically start pushing around that upper area of the controller and it's possible to hit the turbo button by mistake. I did that yesterday and lost a race in World Driver Championship because I had ended up activating the turbo mode for the A button which is the gas in that game, by the time I realized that the controller wasn't broken and I had just activated the turbo mode it was too late. That was totally my fault but just be warned if your used to the xbox one controller like me the same thing could happen to you. I still LOVE this controller though and would recommend it to anyone who still plays their N64!

I’ll admit, I’ve never been a fan of the N64 controller, the shape, the feel of it in your hands, the analogue stick , so as soon as i saw this it was an easy buy for me, the controller itself is immense, I would go as far to say it exceeded my expectations, it doesn’t have the build of a cheap 3rd party controller, instead everything is solid, well built thick plastic, the controller in the hands feels perfect, the grips are perfectly shaped and extremely comfortable, the D-pad isn’t “quite” as tactile as the original N64 controllers, but it’s by no means bad, if does the job and sits on a central pivot so there is no mushy inputs there.

The biggest star is the show however goes to the analogue stick , it’s ultra smooth , no dead zone at all, highly accurate, moving it in any direction in tiny increments is no problem at all, this goes far and above the original stick. Accuracy is comparable to a new Xbox one or ps4 analogue stick.

The face buttons are also good, they don’t have any gimmicky annoying clicky micro switches like a lot of so called “premium” controllers have, instead they function in the traditional way with rubber membrane pads, they do the job as good as any quality controller that uses the same membrane function.

As far as I’m concerned a must have controller for the N64

For the $90ish AUD pricetag this sure does feel clunky and cheaply made. The unit i recieved has a strange deadzone in the bottom left corner, would need to modify the controller to get full range in that section.
    Overall hand feel is average.
Not compatible with Gameboy Transfer Pak.
Overall not happy with this controller, have requested a return with the seller as it doesn't function as it should. has been refunded and returned.
