I've read both highly positive reviews, and horribly scary negative reviews. So what's the deal? Is this stuff good or bad?
Well, in my experience, it can be both. Or neither. It depends on what you need and how you use it . . .
I have horrible constipation from loads of medication that I have had to take for decades. Over the years I've tried just about every type of laxative on the market. Now I use Restoralax only, and have done for a few years. But I almost gave up on it a few times, due to problems I encountered. This is what I've learned (for me) . . .
First, is this the right product for you?
RestoraLax is not a quick-acting, blow it out, type of laxative. I find it takes time to find the right dosage and to establish a good every day bathroom routine. Bodies vary. Our personalities vary. Out experiences vary. RestoraLax can make recommendations based on "the average" but who is "average"? Not me! This product does work, but sometimes it needs patience to work out the details for dosage and routine.
Dosage – for me, the recommended full dose is far too much for my daily use. I find a tiny bit too much or too little makes a huge difference. So I make small adjustments. And I find it's best to stay at a dosage for at least a few days, then make another tiny adjustment. If I don't do it slowly, I can't really tell what worked and what didn't. For example, the 17 gram recommended dose gives me what I call "sticky poo" – it literally sticks to everything, and is accompanied with a lot of gas, bloating, pain and countless runs to the washroom. If I don't take enough Restoralx, I experience all the old familiar agonies of constipation – again, with gas, bloating and pain. I still run to the washroom a lot, but the trips are in vain. When I pour the powder into the measuring lid, the difference between the sticky poo and constipation is only about 3-4mm. So my changes have to be minute. When I get the dosage just right (and I now know what that is), then it's heavenly. I go regularly, once or twice a day, without any discomfort or effort. I just go. Period.
Drink lots – ResotraLax is not a typical laxative. It depends hugely on drinking a lot of water (or other liquid) daily. I drink 9-10 cups a day. I don't like to drink that much, but I find it does work when I do it. So I do it.
Timing – some people say they take RestoraLax in the morning and go that evening, others take it in the evening and go fairly soon after that. I have not yet worked out my best timing. I still find myself on the pot in the middle of the night – not the best routine, but better than not going at all, or having sticky poo problems.
My body takes its sweet time to adjust to changes. Severe constipation if not new to me, so it stands to reason that relief won't come quickly either. So for me, patience is always in order. I can fine tune the dosage and the timing for taking the Restoralax, with great results, but the changes have to be slow. In the long run it is worth it.
So if you won't or can't give the some time and patience to work out the best dosage and timing for you, you will not be happy with this product. But if you're willing to invest some time and effort in yourself, the outcome can be terrific.
Ugly taste and/or smell – some reviewers here have commented about a horrid taste or smell. I take their word for it that it's there. Perhaps we're talking about a bad batch? Or maybe sensitivity? I don't know. I have not found that to be true for me.
I do know about the grittiness problem. For me, it goes away when I stir the powder well into my liquid, then wait a minute or two for it to totally clarify before ingesting it. Then I experience no grittiness at all. But if I'm in a hurry and chug it down right after adding the powder, well, I think "sand" is a good description!
I think all reviews are valid. I also think the problems can be overcome. The question really comes down to this: is RestoraLax a good match for you?
