- Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2024Verified PurchaseThis is without a doubt the best tub strainer extraction tool. Worth the money to have this in your toolbox if you do a lot of plumbing repairs. Far superior to the $15-20 tool options at the local hardware store.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 31, 2022Verified PurchaseThis was the third drain removal tool I purchased and it did the job where the others couldn't. The teeth are sharp and dig into the inside of the drain very effectively. The only downside was the price, but still cheaper than a visit from a plumber. Would recommend to anyone struggling to remove a stubborn drain.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 24, 2024Verified PurchaseI tried all the other 3 different extractors which were a complete waist of time and money.
Finally I purchased the Rectorseal 97258 Extractor and it worked beautifully.
At first I had a very hard time turning the drain but I noticed that the extractor didn't slip
"Unlike all the others".
I then noticed that I needed to apply more torque, so I then added an adapter 3/8" - 1/2" and used
my 1/2" ratchet and finally it worked.
With all the force that I applied, I was amazed to see how this tool was able to withstand
extreme torque.
Must say that this tool was "Very well engineered"
- Reviewed in Canada on April 16, 2021Verified PurchaseToo expensive. Flimsy.
Instead of this tool if you use a small metal cutting blade. Its a breeze to take out the drain without using brute force.

I know it says will work with broken cross bars on the drain plug but it doesn’t. It needs something to press against for the gold gripper part to extend out and grip the sides of the plug. Took me a bit to figure that out as it kept slipping. I finally took the back end of a hammer and held it against the side part that’s sticking up and once gripped into the plug I turned the whole thing. Then repeat. As soon as I let go the hammer the gold part would slip. In the end I managed to get the drain out and without this tool it wouldn’t had been possible but didn’t work the way it says.
Now if the cross bars are there there this thing will work great.
I used it to put the new drain plug in and it worked great and the way it should because the new plug has crossbars.
All in all I’m just happy that it worked and I’ll keep around for my other tubs. It’s a bit expensive at regular price for what you get. It’s not really that complicated of a device. But if you need to get a drain plug out then it’s worth it I guess. It’s the only one on the market that actually got my plug out so I have to give it that. But really it should only be priced at around $50 in my opinion.
4.0 out of 5 starsUsed to removed old bathtub drain. I’ve tried all the other removal tools and they don’t work, they would keep slipping and wouldn’t go in far enough. I got this one as a “used like new” so price was good so decided to give it a try.Worked ok but not on broken crossbars

- Reviewed in Canada on November 16, 2024Verified PurchaseYou’ve got your toolbox ready, and you’re determined to tackle that stubborn bathtub drain. You grab your trusty drain removal tool, but it refuses to cooperate.
I found removing the drain difficult as I have used every other drain removal tool and they don't work. This was easy to use, but
I have an old house and years of soap scum, hair, and hard water can caused my drain to be stuck, making removal harder.
I had to a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to break down buildup. Let it sit for 30 minutes before trying again.
I also applied some heat to the drain with a hairdryer so the metal could expand and make the drain easier to unscrew.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 17, 2023Verified PurchaseI believe I had the toughest tub drain ever and I'm not kidding. Nothing would make this sucker budge - absolutely nothing. After the cross broke off I tried extractor, another one, and then this one. And when I tried to use this tool I couldn't get it to bite. But after a while I learned how to leverage the hole so that I could get it to bit without slipping. And after a few rounds of heat from blow dryer it finally moved a bit. And then slowly but surely I started turning it. I couldn't do it without this tool. Although it's expensive but what can I do. You have to pay to get a victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works very well!
Verified PurchaseAdding picture in case anyone wonders what the whole 'in at an angle' thing is like in practice. That drain'd been in there probably 70 years, and didn't have your silly crossbars even from brand new. The easy-out style extractors didn't work here, but this thing did the trick.
Was it easy? Nooooo. Still needed about a 4' breaker bar and lots of muscle, but that's not the tool's fault. I was concerned about the length of the extension, that could be shortened, really, for strength. The expanding claw isn't pot metal. Sucker's hardened steel, as confirmed by magnet. You WILL have to play around to get the claw to bite correctly into your drain but if anything can do it, this will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
Verified PurchaseRepairing a house for sale after a family member's death. Not well maintained. Cross pieces completely deteriorated away. took a moment to figure out the bite angle, but this powered out the two tub drains easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked well! So thankful!
Verified PurchaseI relied on the previous 鶹 reviews before I purchased this, and I'm happy to be able to say that I am so thankful for this tool. I tried at least 3 - 4 different extractor (inside-out type) tools to try to get the drain trim out. This is the only one that worked. But there were three (3) tricks / pointers to make this tool work, at least in my case. Thankfully, at least a couple of of those were pointed out by another reviewer.
1. start moving it slowly - you want the tool to get a grip / grab / dig into the drain trim.
2. If it still slips - use another wrench to grab the other long piece that sticks up vertically and force that back as you turn the tool - this action will help the tool dig in and make the gripping contact.
3. to get a stronger grip contact, consider angling the tool a bit so that it can dig into the trim piece.
Just as an FYI, I had to return the first Rectorseal 97258 because it kept slipping no matter what I did and simply exchanged it for another one. The replacement did work.
I was happy to pay the $60 bucks for this tool since it did work. I guess after going through so many different tools prior and the thought of having to hire a plumber which is way more expensive than $60, I couldn't help but be thankful.
It didn't come with instructions until I realized they were built into the packaging material. I did make a phone call, and get a live person, quickly, who was knowledgeable and down to earth. NO LONG hold times.

1.0 out of 5 stars Made of poor materials
Verified PurchaseThe tool seems like a good idea but the materials used should be better. The movable gear piece is some kind of pot metal First use and it broke into pieces. The extension where you attach the rachet is too far from the rest of the tool. When trying to remove a stuck drain and you apply more force the torque causes the tool to lean. The force is then going the wrong direction and causes the tool to break. A shorter extension on the tool would help to keep the force closer to the main body of the tool so it should work better.
I was also surprised that is is only a 3/8" drive. Should be 1/2" for something you need to use this much force with.
The teeth on the gear don't get a good grip on the drain. My drain had corrosion and gunk (like most do that will have a need for this type of tool) that caused the tool to not sit flat which allowed it to slip. If you are to the point that you need a tool like this you don't care if it chews up the drain as long as it gets removed so the teeth need to be more aggressive.
