Prisma pencil crayons are the industry standard. I got these for my girlfriend to use, and I almost wanted to keep them myself. The lead is very soft and blends wonderfully. There is no graphite "sheen" left from pressing too hard. All in all, these will color like butter. I used them on both heavy and light weight papers and the results were excellent on both. You will easily be able to to fill in tricky spots with color!

So these are obviously a bit pricier than your average crayola pencils and for good reason. You can do a lot more with these. Thing is though as someone just starting out getting into colouring I'm not able to use them to their full potential.

If you're just beginning I'd recommend starting with something simpler until you can get some of the techniques down then move up to these

I need a set of 12 colored pencils for marking text. I specifically need pencils that mark easily with not having to press down hard and I also need good contrast between the colors. It was challenging to see a noticeable difference between the light & dark blues and between the light and dark greens. It was almost impossible to get a set of 12 that one of the colors wasn’t white, which is useless for my purposes. That being said, I purchased one set each of Sargent, Prismacolor, Prang and Cra-z-art and compared them. Here are my results.

Prisma was probably the best quality and had excellent contrast between the two blues and between the two greens. They marked easily with very little pressure and the range of colors was great. However, for my purposes, I really needed a pink. Prisma had peach or flesh-tone instead that is not pink enough for my needs. I didn’t choose Prisma for that one reason alone. If my purpose was different, it may have been my first choice.

The one I chose was Cra-z-art. There was very good contrast between the two blues and between the two greens, plus it had a very pretty shade of pink. It was the only set that didn’t contain white. Instead, there are two reds with good contrast between them as well. They also marked easily with very little pressure.

Prang was very similar to the Cra-z-art and was my second choice. The reason it was not number one was because the pink was not as bold as the Cra-z-art and it contained white.

Sargent had the best pink. However, it was the hardest of the four and needed more pressure to mark. Also, there was not much contrast between the two blues and between the two greens.

I bought these for doing quick colored sketches and drawing on the go-- situations in which I don't want to burn through my more expensive set of Prismacolor Premiers or expose them to potential damage during transport. This review will be primarily focused on the differences between these two product lines.

Compared to their professional-quality counterparts, the scholar pencils have less intense color and so they don't blend exactly with the premier line. The scholar pencils also seem to "build up" faster than the Premiers, meaning you won't be able to apply as many layers. I wouldn't use them on any of my finished projects for that reason. Despite these two negatives, Prismacolor Scholars are VERY good pencils (and an amazing value). They are far more durable than the Premiers; they go through the daily abuse of being tossed around in my bag and not a single pencil core (aka "lead") has broken yet--let's see a Premier stay in one piece through that! The purple (too pale) and light green (too minty for my taste) that come in this set are quite strange, but you can blend the primary colors to get more interesting combinations. Thus, these do everything they're supposed to-- a decent quality student-grade line of pencils. If you're looking for a pencil that will give you a little more than those Crayola sets, but don't want to shell out the big money for the Premiers or another expensive brand, Prismacolor Scholar pencils are the place to start-- but if these are going to be your main set of colored pencils invest in a larger set! The 12-pack serves my sketching purposes just fine, but the selection is a bit too small for anything more serious.

I'd also like to note that these erase quite well--at least better than any colored pencil I've used before. Almost any light/medium marks I've tried have erased almost completely. Prismacolor also has a similarly priced "Col-Erase" line of erasable pencils (which I have not tried) if erasability is important to you, but I can't imagine how they'd erase any better than these.
