- Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2015Verified PurchaseThis is the most readable and clear translation, with an excellent introduction. Machiavelli is as relevant today as in the 16th century.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 5, 2018I have studied this book three separate times for three separate classes during my undergrad. Ironically, it was not until my upper-level theory class that a professor (the brilliant Rob Walker) insisted on using this translation. It is by far the clearest and most accessible. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone starting out with Machiavelli shell out the few extra bucks to get this version, it's worth it.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 19, 2023Verified PurchaseA terrible purchase. No slipcover (though advertized with one).
First two pages were badly reglued back into place.
Tiny text (sometimes off-centre!) on very poor paper quality.
This was VERY expensive JUNK.
AVOID.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for local or new politicians, very readable
Verified PurchaseI was referred to this book by a friend,
it is a good read and the presentation was very readable, even the obligatory introduction of the analysis of the analysts who do the analysis and the analysis of that analysis.
The meat of the book is still very applicable today. Just replace "Prince" with elected Representative. "Advisor" with administrator/municipal staff. "Army" with Police/Emergency services.
My take is he presented his rulers, or government with 90% sound advice for the national level, and 10% lies to preserve his Florence, to have its independence.
Overall, I was happy with this version, mainly because it is also offered in e form and was relatively low cost!

4.0 out of 5 stars Always good to read the classics
Verified PurchaseI always love reading the classics and finding how relevant they continue to be in our modern society. We may progress in a lot of technological ways but as for our interactions, we just make a lot of returns to old themes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great translation!
Verified PurchaseThere are lots of translations of Machiavelli's The Prince out there, both in in print and online. I first came across this one in graduate school. After having read it several times since being introduced to it as an undergraduate in different forms (in anthologies, in the Portable Machiavelli, etc.), this happens to be the most accessible one. Its introduction is fairly detailed, so new readers to Political Theory may find it overwhelming, but for those who have some background it presents intriguing ideas.
