- Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2024Verified PurchaseWhat in the plague! This book was a page turner, fast paced, can’t put it down, type of read.
When I first started this book I thought “ya I’ll read it, it has good reviews” and figured it would just be a run of the mill fantasy. The story building did take a bit but once the book got into the STORY.. oh my.
The story line itself is full of unexpected twists and surprises you don’t see coming, I felt ALL the emotions. The banter in this was top notch, the angst, the pinning, I’m just speechless.
I had myself making a coffee at 10:00pm because I hit a plot change and HAD to know what was going to happen and had to finish the book.
It’s written in dual POV and the FMC and MMC are total bad asses. I mean can you get better than Paedyn and Kai? I don’t know.
This book doesn’t have any spice and honestly, it didn’t need it. I was so captivated by this story line.
Then you add the fact that each chapter had the prettiest floral design pages and it’s just all around perfection.
The ending was absolutely mind blowing and the epilogue had me wishing it wasn’t 11:30 pm when I finished because I just wanted to go and get the second book.
If I had to give you one piece of advice, it would be to make sure you have reckless on hand before starting this book because you’re going to need it.
I rated this book 5 stars because I will most definitely be recommending to the world, and I will definitely re read this book in the future.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 1, 2025Verified PurchaseIt's a book with a fun and exciting storytime (although kinda predictable) of a kingdom filled with individuala with extraordinary powers and those who are just ordinary. It's heavy on romance and yearning. The maintenance characters area strong and have their strengths tested throughout the book while having to feel powerless in different ways. The main characters are very interesting.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2023Verified PurchaseNow THIS is how you write tension!! Hats off to Lauren Roberts for physically having me on the edge of my seat while reading this book. This is an absolutely astounding debut novel, I found myself completely immersed, devouring it in practically one sitting because it was just that addicting!
I felt very Hunger Games meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night vibes from the beginning, but don't be fooled, this is a masterpiece all in it's own!!
This is a book is truly designed for those who crave a true romantic fantasy, it encompasses every element that I love with a few more that I didn't even realize I needed! As a devout fan of the forbidden love trope, this one hit all the right notes. Paedyn and Kai were utterly captivating, I couldn't get enough of their interactions. The tension and banter were not only fulfilling but also entertaining! There is the perfect combination of action, tension, romance and intrigue to keep the reader hooked the entire way through.
Paedyn, as the leading female character, was a force to be reckoned with. Her storyline will have you on her side from the very beginning, she is courageous, tenacious and has a heart of gold! She embodied a refreshing and fun character, and I can't wait to see the twists and turns that this series has in store for her. Kai is intriguing and incredibly charming, his interactions with Pae allowed the reader to feel their palpable chemistry. His own intriguing backstory only adds to the excitement, and I'm eagerly anticipating more of his character's development. We also get to meet a host of side characters, some who I really hope are a larger part of the next part in this series!
This book is a must-read for anyone enamored with romantasy! It seamlessly weaves together all of the essential elements while still feeling fresh and unique in it’s own way!

- Reviewed in Canada on June 2, 2024Verified Purchaseidk i’ve read threw the first few chapters and i just can’t seem to get any farther. usually when i read if it doesn’t have me hooked in the beginning it’s such a drag to try and continue. it’s giving hunger game vibes kinda like been there done that. i wish i picked a different book lol
- Reviewed in Canada on February 4, 2025Verified PurchaseI really enjoyed Powerless by Lauren Roberts. The concept of a world where people have powers but the protagonist doesn't is fascinating and gave a unique spin to the superhero genre. The main character's journey of self-discovery, facing challenges, and finding strength in their own way kept me hooked from start to finish.
The writing style is engaging, and the pacing is just right – not too fast, but not too slow either. I did find that some parts could have been a little more fleshed out, which is why I’m giving it 4/5 stars instead of 5. However, it's still a solid read with strong character development and an intriguing plot. If you're a fan of superhero fiction or coming-of-age stories, this book is definitely worth checking out!
- Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2024Verified PurchaseI love loved loved this book! It was such a nice refreshing read after some terrible books I dnf’ed. The plot was amazing, I loved the banter between characters!
Honestly a really well thought out book. I loved the throne of glass/divergent/hunger games vibe. Yes it’s YA and not spicy but honestly the book didn’t need it. That’s how amazing it it!
A really refreshing read and I can’t wait for more from this author!
- Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2024Verified PurchaseAbsolutely fantastic!! An emotional Rollercoaster. Hunger games esc. This is how you write enemies to lovers. I couldn't put it down. Stayed up till 3am to finish and then stared at the wall for a good hour.
Never have I ever wanted a book to end less. I could live in this world forever. It consumes every peice of my soul. Dual pov, done right. Fmc is an absolute badass. Kai and pae will not disappoint. Best book I've read in a long time! Now excuse me while I stitch the hole in my heart back together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blog Once Upon a Time a Book

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun YA romantasy, worth the hype
Verified PurchaseI waited until this series was complete to read as I didn't think I could wait after hearing there are major cliffhangers. This first book was a lot of fun. I liked the dual POV and the two main characters. The story wasn't unique, and it's full of the usual tropes for this genre but it was well written,fast-paced and enjoyable to read. I read this tandem with Powerful and found that made it even better.
