Overall Impression / Comments:
When it comes to taking photos with an SLR, having extra batteries on hand is a must particularly if you shoot in continuous mode or like using the live preview on the LCD screen. These Powerextra rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries are higher capacity (mAh – milliamp hours: the amount of charge the battery can store) and energy capacity (Wh – watt hours: how much power it can deliver) compared to the original Nikon batteries.
The voltage on the original EN-EL14 Nikon battery was 7.4V whereas the newer EN-EL14a is 7.2V. The voltage of the Powerextra battery is in line with the original Nikon battery.
For context, here is a recap of the capacity (mAh) and energy (Wh) of the batteries mentioned:
• Original Nikon EN-EL14: 1030mAh 7.7Wh
• Nikon EN-EL14a: 1230mAh 8.9Wh
• Powerextra: 1500mAH 11.1WH
The supplied Powerextra charger is more convenient as it can charge both batteries simultaneously using the supplied USB cable, compared to the original Nikon AC adapter, which can only charge 1 battery at a time.
The Powerextra batteries were charged faster using the USB charger compared to the Nikon AC charger with higher capacity EN-EL14a battery. My Nikon D5100 had no issues recognizing the Powerextra batteries. I’ve tried taking photos using continuous shooting mode (for motion) with live view mode so I can preview the photo while it is mounted on a tripod with the LCD lens facing me using a remote. I’m happy to say that after an afternoon of shooting pictures, the Powerextra batteries seem to last longer than the newer EN-EL14a Nikon battery, but keep in mind the Nikon batteries have already been used for many years.
Pros:
- Higher capacity compared to the original Nikon batteries
- Charger is surprisingly quicker and efficient compared to the original Nikon AC battery charger. In fact, you could say more convenient too because a high-capacity power bank or cell phone charger can be used – this is something that you could not do with the old charger if you are outdoors far away from an AC outlet.
- Competitively priced. At the time of this review, you get 2 Powerextra batteries with a charger & USB cable for CAD $39.99. That is much cheaper compared to the Nikon EL-EL14a battery, which currently sells for about CAD $45 to $90.
Cons:
- None so far, but will update this review if any issues with the battery’s performance to hold a charge after longer use.
Summary:
Based on my initial use so far, the Powerextra batteries seem to perform as well, if not better than the original Nikon batteries. For the price, the Powerextra batteries are also more cost-effective, and I would order more to replace my Nikon batteries once they can no longer function properly or hold a charge.
