- Reviewed in Canada on March 11, 2024Verified PurchaseBeatles 1st release, UK version which in Canada came out as "Twist & Shout" with a pared down track list and a different cover which many will recollect with fondness..... I mean really, what can one say? Its the Beatles. 1st Album. Explosive to this very day & brilliantly re-mixed in living color. If this doesnt get your foot tapping and put a smile on your face I dont know what will.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2020Verified PurchaseLots of energy here and obviously just starting their phenomenal career that ended prematurely seven years later, although Lennon quit about six months before. Item arrived promptly in perfect condition: thanks! Gotta love opening classic, most of the covers, There's a Place, others too.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 30, 2009Please Please Me was the magnificent beginning to the recording career of possibly the greatest, and certainly the most culturally important, rock n' roll band of all time. Released in 1963, just as Lennon and McCartney were hitting their strides as songwriters, the album includes several early classic Beatles compositions, as well as a few covers that seemed to be the idea of a not quite convinced George Martin. The album rarely falters, from the thrilling opening (1-2-3-4) sung by Paul on I Saw Her Standing There through to John's equally exciting rendering of Twist & Shout, the best Beatles cover ever. In between are the band's first two singles - Love Me Do and the much better Please Please Me - and great performances on Misery, Ask Me Why, P.S. I Love You, There's a Place, and especially Do You Want to Know A Secret? The weakest tracks are the other covers - Anna, Chains, Boys, A Taste of Honey, and Baby It's You - though most are redeemed by stellar vocals by Lennon and McCartney. The Beatles were about to become huge, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, but Please Please Me offered enough evidence that the band's popularity would not be based on hype alone. John and Paul were already great vocalists and would soon develop into two of the greatest writers in the history of rock n' roll. Those who listened to this album back in 1963 heard something fresh that had been missing from music for a long while. In particular they heard a band that was fronted by two singers as good as Elvis, two writers as good as Chuck Berry, and that played as if it was having a great time playing.

Love having this as part of my collection. Excellent quality and sound. It¡¯s The Beatles, how can it be bad??

5.0 out of 5 stars Help!
Verified PurchaseI headline my review as 'Help!'. Why do I do this?
Well like most positive reviewers, this is a great album, but is it?
I do not know what George or Paul or John had for breakfast on those important recording dates. But what I can tell you is that this album's future depends on whether it is listened to in stereo or mono.
I could draw upon other reviewers' nostalgic comments on this potential great album, but if I listen to this album in stereo first, I guess I would have not rated this album the historic respect it does indeed does deserve. How can I say this? Well, indeed I did buy this album on vinyl, but in stereo..........Enough said.
Yes, I have bought the post 'Rubber Soul' remastered albums, and boy do I wish I could buy 'please please me', but to hear john in one speaker and bass in another speaker (stereo), kills this album, hence I've refrained from buying this remastered cd.
So, true Beatles, rock fans, spread the word, unless you can tell me to buy this remastered 'stereo' version and that it does reflect the beauty of this outstanding album (mono).
I hope I am wrong, so I can have this wonderful album on cd, and partttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttty. But then I wondered why would EMI released a 'mono' version of the studio albums? I guess they do it for exactly for 'please please me' as they no doubt know there is a crucial sound experience, difference.
Please tell me I am wrong so I can once again have this wonderful album, on cd. Help!

5.0 out of 5 stars They keep getting better
Verified PurchaseThere are some legendary tracks on this CD like "I saw her standing there", "PS I love you". What a fabulous group and what an incredible era the 60's (and 70's) were. They made rock and roll seem like everyone could do it - which we found out later - couldn't be repeated. The songs are lots of fun.
