Dan Russell's Sportstalk was appointment-listening for tens of thousands of B.C. sports fans over its three-decade run. What began in 1984 as a simple 50-minute filler would grow into the longest-running and most-listened to show of its kind in Canada.

Russell created and solo-hosted the weekday-evening shows as Sportstalk became the gathering spot for Vancouver Canucks fans, highlighted by memorable marathon coverage of the 1994 and 2011 Stanley Cup finals.

Bobby Orr, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, George Foreman, Vin Scully and Pelé were among Russell's 25,000 interview subjects. But it was Brian Burke's weekly segment that created many of Sportstalk's greatest moments; that is, until their relationship went drastically sour. Russell also fielded more than 200,000 calls, including many from the renowned Paul Lafleur, a.k.a. "The Pauser," the most famous caller in Vancouver radio history.

Russell's story also documents his relentless attempt to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a full-time NHL play-by-play broadcaster.

A trailblazer, Russell started long before the arrival of 24/7 sports stations, inventing a format that's now commonly duplicated — all while stickhandling through the neverending politics of the radio business.

Dan Russell, the author of Pleasant Good Evening: A Memoir, was the creator and solo host of Sportstalk, which had a 30-year run as Canada’s longest-running and most-listened-to radio show of its kind.

Debuting in 1984 on CJOR Vancouver, Russell essentially invented a genre — sports talk radio in Canada. He also broke ground in 1989 when Sportstalk became the first weekday talk show to air on FM radio in Canada.

His career included being the play-by-play broadcaster for the WHL on SHAW, the CHL on Sportsnet, Vancouver Canucks pay-per-view, Seattle Thunderbirds radio and the BC High School basketball championships. Russell also hosted Vancouver Canucks broadcasts on CKNW, and he is a former Vancouver Sun sports columnist.

Russell also served as a sports anchor at BCTV and he has appeared as a ‘sports expert’ on CBC National, Global TV and Sportsnet.

All of which happened after Russell, who was born and raised in Richmond, BC, became CISL’s first disc jockey, at age 19, when that station signed on in 1980.

Russell, married with three children, now spends his time in Canada and Asia.

A pleasant and hugely enjoyable read, from the very beginning to the very, very end!

A pleasant and hugely enjoyable read, from the very beginning to the very, very end!
I will start off by confessing I'm not much of a reader, never have been to be honest. I lose interest very easily and just can't be bothered. I prefer audio books! Having said that, I did not want to wait for an audio version of Dan's book, if one is going to be available. I've been waiting for this book for the last 8-9 years since Sportstalk signed off for the final time! Russ has written a masterpiece here, he really has. He weaves us through 30+ years of his radio life, as well as his personal life throughout that period, and prior! Honestly, it was hard to put this book down! For me, it was the back stories, behind the scenes that really were the most entertaining and enjoyable. Some of which I only partly heard before, but were rumors only. Most of Dan's stories, such as the detailed Brian Burke stories I had not heard, they were all new, like the others, and Dan explained them in great detail. The office politics in some of these instances completely blew me away! For example, all the the in fighting, breaches of contracts, back stabbing, etc, etc, is really something else....like WOW!! As always....their are two sides to every story, but the way ownership/management at a couple of the radio stations Dan worked for....shameful, and I'm being kind. They treated him very poorly, in many instances, IMO! Well not just imo, it's fact. I found myself really loathing a couple of these management clowns! Creeps....to describe them nicely! You'll see what I'm talking about when you read the memoir! Incredible all the big names Dan has interviewed and worked with over his 30+ years! Radio personalities, sports stars, politicians, movie stars, etc, etc, it goes on and on....incredible! Oh, and before I forget....the pictures, in two sections of the book. These are really great, and not just a couple pics, their are many! So much more I could say about the book, but it would take up too much of this review, and I don't have a way with words like some other reviewers do! I was excited at the beginning when I started reading the book....even more excited reading through the book at how entertaining and fun it was....also angered, saddened, disappointed and other emotions reading through to the end! The sadness I felt at the end was how I felt 9 years ago when Sportstalk ended....because It was over! Perhaps Dan will write a follow up book. I'm sure their must be lot's of worthy stories, etc, on the editing floor he could put in another book. We need Russell in this market, one way or the other. He is sorely missed. A book is great....but we need more....this MARKET needs more. A podcast at minimum would be nice!

"Dan’s book is, in a word, brilliant – a great read, that is honest, self criticizing, incredibly detailed, funny, loaded with behind the scenes info on the sports and media worlds, and it shows how hard he worked to get things done fore the benefit of the thousands who went to sleep with him every night of the week with his must-listen radio program. I say all that despite the fact the book does beat me up - and with good reason - for the errors of my ways in our early days together - problems which we have since overcome.
I strongly suggest this book belongs in your library.”

Good insight to local radio. The author worked hard to promote himself and his radio program.

If you are a fan of the BC Sports scene, new or old, you will be really happy with this memoir, from the original pioneer of SportsTalk Radio, Dan Russell. I had no idea of the behind the scenes work for thirty years that went to bringing avid sport fans a voice in British Columbia. I learned more about so many sports celebrities - which today's hosts could only dream of having on the air. I was amazed at how respected Dan was within the sports community and as well how many plastic people he had to deal with over the years. This man did more for growing and modernizing sport in BC, and educating and promoting with passion the WHL. Still the very best "Sports Talk Show host ever" in BC and too bad he is not on the air anymore. Can't miss read in my opinion.

Now in my 70’s, I have played and followed sports seriously all my life. I am very familiar with Sportstalk and Dan Russell. Recently, when he was on several Vancouver sports talk shows, promoting his soon to be released book, I was intrigued enough to buy the book when it became available on 鶹. It’s an easy and fast read.
I have divided my review into 3 segments.
    The Good

Living in Victoria, I followed the Canucks from the beginning along with sports in general through Vancouver radio, TV and newspapers. Dan’s recounting of the numerous personalities involved directly or indirectly with Sportstalk specifically, and, the Vancouver/BC sports scene in general, whether the business side or the radio/TV side was, for me, like a pleasant stroll down memory lane. The behind-the-scenes stories are the heart and soul of the book, and yes, the centrepiece is the detailed accounts of Dan’s mercurial relationship with Brian Burke—the strength of the book lies with the thorough notes, diaries and journals Dan kept, allowing for a smooth and compelling story line.

    The Bad
As I felt during the years I listened to Sportstalk on a ‘on again, off again’ basis, one, if not, the biggest barrier to me becoming a consistent listener was Dan’s prodigious ego and self-appreciation of his endeavors over the years. Yes, his show was a massive success and had a loyal and committed fan base, but, that Dan Russell arrogance just rubbed me the wrong way—as I say, just my opinion. There are numerous, too many to count, mentions in the book as to how innovative and all around great Mr. Russell performed during his 30 year career, according to Dan. Like many talk shows, sometimes listeners tune in mostly to hear the commentary from other listeners—I’m certain Sportstalk was no exception (Re: the Pauser as just one example)

    The Ugly
In the early part of his memoir, Dan readily admits that his life long hopes, dreams and ambition was to be the Canucks play-by-play announcer, or, if somehow that didn’t materialize, the PxP man for another NHL team. When this didn’t materialize, I detected bitterness and resentment, especially towards other announcers—easy to guess who—
It also becomes apparent, that in Dan Russell’s world, if you’re a loyal friend or a cooperative coworker, boss, et al., that he liked, he would heap praise and kind remarks upon you; if however, you butted heads with him, if he felt you were out to sabotage him, or, if he just didn’t like you, he would rain down criticisms and harsh condemnation—imo—this detracted from the book—I especially had a big issue with his mention of Jason Botchford—fine and good to pass along his personal observations and mention his untimely passing, but to provide the exact cause of his death was for me, unnecessary, totally uncalled for and over the line—some of the personalities Russell mentions in the book had their own fair share of demons, but, he doesn’t seem to go into those details upon their passing.

All in all, if you’re a die-hard Canuck fan, a long ago Sportstalk fan—I suggest you buy this book—you very likely will see some things the same as myself, but also, most likely see things very differently. In the final analysis, different opinions, sometimes heated, were, in all likelihood, the main attraction of the Sportstalk programme.

I’m half way through the book and have been struggling to put this thing down! Dan does a masterful job sharing his rich history as a sports reporter and radio personality. 25,000 interviews, over 30 years with all the biggest names in sports. This is a must read for all sport fans, especially if your passionate about Hockey - Canada’s game! hockey!
