- Reviewed in Canada on June 14, 2024I like to make various kinds of jams with fresh fruit from the farmer's market during the summer, and I usually use gelatin as a thickener. But some of my friends are vegetarian or vegan, which makes animal-based gelatin a no-go. I've heard that agar agar can be a good substitute so I wanted to give it a try. I was pretty happy with the result. It makes a thick, easily spread jam pretty much just as well as gelatin does, with no major difference in flavour either. A little goes a long way, too. I used about 5 grams of the powder for a big jar, which means I could make about 10 jars of different jams with this small packet of 50 grams of agar agar. Pretty nice!

While it is advertised as keto-friendly, it is worth noting that traditional gelatin also possesses the same keto-friendly properties, making the specific advertisement somewhat redundant. Although it functions adequately as a thickener, the price point makes it a less appealing option for regular use.

this is a very small bag, so kind of expensive given this is only 50g, but usually most recipes only need 1 tsp or so, so this should last you a few recipes.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 7, 2024This is an excellent plant-based gelatin which works as well as gelatin sourced from animals. It is easy to use, just requires a little bit of soaking in water and bringing it to a boil to activate its spongy gelatin-like structure. The amount of prepared agar agar to be added in place of gelatin in the recipe will vary based on other thickening and binding agents and it requires some trial and error. I have used this to make fruit gels and jellies and has worked very well so far. I like that it doesn't not have any aftertaste which is often the case with artificial sweeteners or additives. Overall, ti think this plant-based gelatin is a great option for making vegan desserts.

That said, the packaging and marketing for this product are a little over the top. All agar agar is vegan-friendly, that's the point of using it as a gelatin substitute.
Price-wise, I find that this is certainly a little more pricier than what you could purchase at some retailers. It's certainly not your brand-name grocers, but specialty stores or international grocery stores might have more affordable options.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 13, 2024There are so many dessert recipes that use agar agar. I like using agar agar because it’s vegan. Lately I’ve been trying to make my own gummy candy because the store bought ones are not very healthy. For the recipe, I squeezed out an 8oz bottle of real apple juice from apples, and blended a pound and a half of strawberries and squeezed one lemon. There’s an option to add a sweetener, such as honey, but I opted not to. I then added 1 teaspoon of this agar agar for every cup of liquid I had and mixed it well under heat until everything dissolved. I poured the mixture into silicone molds and ended up making gummy candy sticks, which were delicious. Fantastic agar agar; will be repurchasing!
