When ¡°Planet Earth¡± premiered in 2006 on Britain¡¯s BBC One, it was the most expensive nature documentary series ever made, and the first to be shot entirely in HD. It was remarkable- and now after 11 years of waiting, we have Planet Earth II. And, that wait was worth it considering incredible footage they have come out with and the cutting edge technology they have used in making. Like the original, ¡°Planet Earth II¡± focuses in each episode on a specific environment ¡ª this time islands, mountains, jungles, deserts, grasslands, and cities. The remarkable thing about Planet Earth II is that the series is shot in such a way that it allows us to experience the world from the viewpoint of the animals themselves. Each episode has created the impression that we're witnessing secret, stolen minutes from the lives of the creatures on screen. The sequel was over three years in the making and, like the original, is narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The entire Planet Earth II crew shot footage in 40 different countries on 117 different filming trips. They used cutting edge technology to bring some of the most inhospitable regions on earth into the living rooms of millions. Planet Earth II takes nature documentary making to an another level. The BBC Natural History Unit has really outdone itself. This documentary is a truly sublime accomplishment, an epic achievement that everyone should watch.

    This latest Planet Earth (ll) offering is not simply a sequel of sorts or a continuing story from the original series, it does offer something new. While it would be unfair to expect it to grab everyone's attention like the amazing original series did, it goes a long way in making the cinematography even more appealing and intimate in many ways.

    Further advances in technology really get you up close and personal with the subject matter and some truly expert and daring camera work allow you to feel less like you are on the couch and more like you are in the field. Don't let that be the sole selling point though, the stories are still the reason to invest your time. Enthralling for all ages, it really gives you a huge window into a world that we all too often ignore and forget. Beauty surrounds us in this world but so does modern chaos and these films give us a chance to remember and refocus on why this planet is such a magical place as well as why it deserves to be treated better by us. We are not here alone. This offering also goes beyond introducing us to the little (or totally) unknown, it also focuses on the changes that the producers and Sir David Attenborough have witressed since the ground breaking original series. This element alone, is reason enough to buy this series but as expected, there are so many other reasons as well.

    Technically speaking, these discs offer the best sound and visual presentations that the medium has to offer. Crisp, vibrant and detailed in every way. They are well worth their price and if your family enjoys them like ours does, you will find yourself pulling them out of the library more than anything else that you own. We have them all and we have watched them over and over in rotation.

    BBC and Attenborough are the standard by which all others in this genre, get measured.

    Don't even hesitate, you deserve to enjoy this magical journey.

    I thought to myself: How can they top Planet Earth? It is the best nature documentary ever made. But to my delight, they did. But don't compare it to Planet Earth, but do not miss it either. It stands on its own merits. A few days ago we had a couple of retirees from the states visiting us, and when you get to a certain age we all think we've pretty much seen everything, including nature shows. So reluctantly they agreed to watch an episode, just to be polite. To say they were stunned would be to understate their reaction. We could hardly get them to leave! They are going to get both versions when they get home, and probably a bigger tv just to watch them.
