Great read. Historical first hand accounts without embellishments. Broken down into short stories of individual patrols.

Here are some of the most courageous missions executed by six-man teams on their own deep behind enemy lines. Ranging from the Central Highlands to the Mekong Delta to excursions--authorized and unauthorized--into Cambodia, these gripping accounts begin when the call first went out for covert US long-range reconnaissance patrols in late 1965, continue through the battles of Tet, and go all the way up to the final, tortured pullout. These are LRRP, LRP, and Ranger units at their finest, under the most desperate circumstances: one team surrounded by the enemy with no choice but to break out of the trap--or die, another caught in an ambush of horrific proportions. When recon missions suddenly became contact missions, when grenades started flying and AK-47s were smoking, each man's life was instantly on the line--and only his skills and the grit of his teammates could prevent certain death. These highly trained warriors were among the best America had to offer, and they gave their best, no matter how high the price . . .

About the Author
Gary Linderer is the publisher of Behind the Lines, a magazine that specializes in US military special operations. He served in Vietnam with the LRPs of the 101st Airborne Division, earning two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star with V device (for valor), the Army Commendation Medal with V device, and two Purple Hearts.
A trained traditional and voice actor who loves to read and perform, Chris Monteiro has lent his voice to television and radio ads, animated films, video games, documentaries, and dozens of audiobooks. As an "Army brat" in his youth and a twenty-two-year military veteran and pilot as an adult, Chris has lived and traveled extensively throughout The United States, Europe, and Asia. These experiences, along with his own unique cultural and ethnic heritage, are among the greatest influences on Chris's chameleon-like ability to quickly adapt to languages, accents, and dialects. With a vocal range that covers young adult through middle aged, he delivers nuanced fictional character performances as well as mature academic reads. Chris graduated from Ebry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a BS in professional aeronautics and continued his education at the University of Massachusetts, earning a master's degree in teaching with a concentration in history.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 3, 2000KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT, JUST LIKE HIS OTHER BOOKS. HE'S BEEN THERE AND DONE IT. SHOWS A REAL PROBLEM WE STILL HAVE TODAY. WE LET OUR TROOPS DOWN WHEN THEY NEED SUPPORT. SOMEBODY SETTING IN A OFFICE RUNNING THE SHOW, WHEN THEY AREN'T OUT FRONT OF TROOPS LEADING THE WAY.TOO MANY RINGKNOCKERS NOT ENOUGH ON THE JOB TRAINING.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 31, 2001After having just completed Mr. Linderer's latest book, I must say that the he continues to write with excellent skill and story telling ability. I was once told the difference between a war story and a fairy tale is that a war story starts with, "This ain't no s***." Well PHANTOM WARRIORS "ain't no s***." PHANTOM WARRIORS is a high speed trail through a collection of stories from different units and their operational and geographical contrasts. This ruck sack of stories from other LRRP/Ranger units in Vietnam takes the reader from the Delta to the north end of the Ho Chi Minh trail and each step of the journey is sprinkled with booby traps, incompetent leaders, and fantastic acts of bravery, heroism, and examples of the of the LRRP/Ranger creeds, "Rangers Lead The Way" and "LRRPs Don't Leave LRRPs Behind." When you visit the military history section of your book store DON'T LEAVE PHANTOM WARRIORS BEHIND! The only critisiscm I have is that the book ends all too quickly and I will retract that statement if Mr. Linderer promises that he won't stop with Volume II.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 22, 2003I have read all of Gary Linderers books and almost all the books still in publish on the 101st Airborne divisons LRRP, LRP, and Ranger units in Vietnam. Everyone I have read by Gary Linderer has been amazing and I have not been able to put them down. This one is no different. I recommend any and all of his books plus books like Recondo by Larry Chambers and the entire Six Silent Men Series.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 9, 2000I just finished Phantom Warriors, and as with all of Mr. Linderer's books, started reading it again. I am a woman who lost a fiance in Vietnam. Mr. Linderer's first book "Eyes of the Eagle" not only gave me a first hand look at what happened to someone I love, it led me to meeting Gary, becoming friends, and having him introduce me to the man that is now my husband, Riley (Dozer) Cox. Phantom Warriors is a compilation of stories sought out and printed by Gary so that there would be a history of ALL Lrrp, Lrp, and Ranger units left. He and others have written the stories of the 101st Lrrps, Lrps, and Rangers, and now in the spirit of brotherhood, took his time and let us all know of the others that operated in units like his unit. Thank you Gary, not only for your writing, but for the love you show to those you served with, those you didn't, and their families.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2002I READ ALL THE BOOKS BY GARY LINDERER I CAN FIND. HE TELLS THE STORIES THAT NEED TO BE TOLD AND TAKES YOU RIGHT THERE WITH HIM AND ALL HIS BROTHERS. THIS BOOK AND ITS SEQUEL ARE MUST READING FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS ERA OF OUR HISTORY.GARY TAKES YOU TO THE JUNGLE AND LEAVES YOU WITH YOUR HEART IN YOUR THROAT. I'M REREADING BOTH FOR THE THIRD TIME.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 10, 2000I've spoken w/Gary a number of times and his latest book, which is part 1 of 2, is an example of his ability to grasp the humanity, emotion, and truth of what the "men in painted faces" did in Vietnam - I spent a tour there also & while not in Gary's class, I can appreciate his writings - an excellent book for anyone interested in the reality of the Vietnam war & small unit operations! Should be required reading for any Federal level politican!

5.0 out of 5 stars Phantom Warriors
Verified PurchasePhantom Warriors,is an excellent collection of Ranger missions, the bravery of young men and the stupidity of their senior officers who dident recognise their true value.I think it also shows how much information got out to the enemy and was used to amambush these fine young men.Not forgetting the bravery they showed in fighting thier way out.A great read.
