I love this book! When I am reading it, I find that I slip into hearing the dialogue in an Irish accent - what a great testament to M. Cooper's writing - very natural. It makes it extra fascinating to me that this is a true story of what happened. After reading it, I feel even more proud of my own ancestors, that they made it through that depth of 'thick and thin'...amazing!

In 1825, prolonged rainfall and economic policies in rural Ireland brought the livelihoods of thousands to a breaking point and sparked rebellion. An experiment, under the direction of Peter Robinson, was designed to remove 2 024 of the impoverished, tenant farmers and malcontents, transport them to Canada, and then measure their ability to transform the wilderness into productive farmland. The Peter Robinson Experiment tells the story of Patrick and Margaret Heffernan’s journey which, overshadowed by great uncertainty, demanded unwavering determination to reach their new home safely.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 8, 2024Verified PurchaseI was so excited to find this book, as my husband's ancestors were Peter Robinson settlers. This book did not disappoint! I was totally immersed in the story and can now really understand what this group faced on their journeys to Canada. A wonderful way to learn about this history!
- Reviewed in Canada on November 7, 2024I wish I had reviewed this book before purchasing. I was expecting more of a historical account of the journey. My ancestors were also part of the Peter Robinson 1825 journey. I found the story of Patrick and Margaret tiresome, as it is fictional not knowing what they really thought or experienced. The story is really drawn out until they get to Quebec, Kingston, and finally Peterborough. K
- Reviewed in Canada on November 27, 2024Verified PurchaseI have read 50 pages and I hasten to say I’m very impressed. You demonstrate an impressive imagination and the italicised thoughts of the several characters draw one in very successfully.
It’s all I expected, actually more

- Reviewed in Canada on July 21, 2024Verified PurchaseExcellent book on Irish settlers to Canada. Well written with the human touch of the people who came here.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2024A fascinating story, personally, for someone whose Irish ancestors were fortunate to have been included in Peter Robinson’s “Upper Canada” emigration scheme of 1825 . The narrative fills-in many gaps regarding how families were selected from amongst the impoverished Irish masses and what they endured in their escape from systemic discrimination. It is the story of early settlers who would contribute much to the fabric of Canadian society.

4.0 out of 5 stars History Comes Alive!
Verified PurchaseAs a descendant (and researcher) of Peter Robinson, I found this book very accurate. The author also created a sense of the places that the settlers encountered in their journey. Sights, sounds & feelings count as much as dates. An engaging read.

2.0 out of 5 stars poorly written, great subject.
Verified PurchaseIf only people who are not writers would ask for help from a basic editor! I'm a descendant as well, and for that reason it irks me to read lousy writing about such an important and dramatic piece of history. Yes, it's a free country to write as we please, but next time simply go to a high school english teacher and ask for some help.
