«Aquí está todo lo que debe tener un libro: oído, perspectiva, cabeza, corazón y una humanidad sin límites.» - The New York Times
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
New York Times Bestselling Author“Beautiful and heartrending. . . . Memoir, autobiography, epicedium, perhaps even some fiction: they are all here, and they are all quite wonderful.” —Los Angeles Times
When Isabel Allende’s daughter, Paula, became gravely ill and fell into a coma, the author began to write the story of her family for her unconscious child. In the telling, bizarre ancestors appear before our eyes; we hear both delightful and bitter childhood memories, amazing anecdotes of youthful years, the most intimate secrets passed along in whispers. With Paula, Allende has written a powerful autobiography whose straightforward acceptance of the magical and spiritual worlds will remind readers of her first book, The House of the Spirits.

About the author

Isabel Allende is one of the most widely read authors in the world, having sold more than seventy-seven million books. Born in Peru and raised in Chile, Isabel won worldwide acclaim in 1982 with the publication of her first novel, The House of the Spirits. Since then, she has authored more than twenty-six bestselling and critically acclaimed books, including Daughter of Fortune, Island Beneath the Sea, Paula, and The Wind Knows My Name.
In 1996, following the death of her daughter, Paula, Allende established a charitable foundation in her honor. The foundation has awarded grants to more than one hundred nonprofits worldwide, delivering life-changing care to hundreds of thousands of women and girls.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 29, 2014Verified PurchaseIsabel Allende: Paula.
Isabel Allende is an excellent writer, but she spent many years as a refugee in a foreign country, and had to endure the ultimate tragedy - the loss of her child. Because for a great writer creating is her way of existence, the authoress was able to create a kind of family biography, while waiting for her daughter to wake up from a coma, and later accepting that such a moment would never happen.
There is a great wisdom in the book and much love and compassion. To be aware that we are born with a set of cards which we should play the best we can but cannot change them, is an unforgettable lesson for anybody's life. Great art is cleansing and life - strengthening.
To end with, just a remark about porphyria, the illness which killed Paula. It has a genetic origin, and to English - speaking readers would be known as the malady suffered by King George III when he lost America and was considered insane.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 5, 2021Verified PurchaseShe goes back and forth betweeen various periods of her life. If it is supposed to be destined to her daughter, a continuous story would have beeen clearer.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 30, 2017Verified PurchaseIsabel Allende writes with lots of feeling, and knows how to convey them to the reader. Her imagination is limitless. She has travelled a lot and therefore has experienced different ways of thinking and feeling. I have read many of her books,I read them in Spanish so I really get the flavour. It was a great read.

- Reviewed in Canada on November 14, 1997This is her best book ever. Spanish is my mother tongue, so i read the original version. Isabel Allende has this uncanny ability to make some words jump out of the page and grab you, words that you thought you had forgotten, that bring you back to childhood, or remind you of an old neighbor. I read some of the reader comments before posting this, and someone said this book makes you laugh, then five minutes later makes you cry. I couldn't agree more. I enjoyed it also because i saw how much autobiographical insight is in _The House of the Spirits_. One more thing to mention: the description she makes of her uncle Salvador Allende must be one of the best portraits in writing i have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read
Verified PurchaseI loved this book and, now that I have finished it, I am missing it. It is beautifully written, very moving and I also found it very informative. Isabel Allende writes with frankness and great sensitivity which creates a very compelling read.
I have Level B2 in Spanish and I was able to read the Spanish version with relative ease due to her style of writing.
