- Reviewed in Canada on January 5, 2021Verified PurchaseThe film is a kind of documentary about the final days of Paris' Nazi occupation, the role of French resistance, and the different opinions among them. There are dozens of first class American and French actors. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 8, 2014Verified PurchaseThis is one of those rare movies that that tells the same story as the book, I saw the movie when it first appeared on the screen. I only recently read the book and I wanted to see the movie again. Unfortunately I did not notice it was the PAL (European version not NTSC). So I re ordered it in the US standard I could view. It also has one of the best original sound tracks. If you like WW ll Movies and would like a history lesson of the retaking of Paris by the Allied forces. order it will be a nice addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent wwII movie
Verified PurchaseAs a WWII history guy (well somewhat anyway), and a retired Military Officer, I found the movie excellent, and over all I found it to be very accurate in the way it shows the liberation of Paris. Just enyoy it, for what it is and not pick it apart because of sound dubbing or someone did not speak in proper language. I did not detect any large errors of fact. As with all movies some actors are better than others. Not impressed with Kirk Douglas as Patton, however the part was very small. Frick as Hitler - excellent, as was Anthony Pekings as Sgt Warren. Gert Frobe as von Choltitz, also excellent, however felt the script did not allow one to realy understand him. I enjoyed it being in Black & White which allowed for actual footage of events to be shown to great effect. I had a tears in my eyes when the bells of Notre Dame rang for first time in four years--what a great moment for the French I noted that one negative review mentioned there was no reference to the German's treatment of Jews. As horable as that was and we all need to fully know what unthinkable things that happened to the European Jewish population before and during WWII, this movie was not about that. It just was not revelant to this story line, as it was not in Battle of Bulge or The Longest day and to have someway included it would have detracted from movie. Seeing the prisoners (both political and probably Jewish) being shipped to Germany certainly left you with a feeling of how all "enemies of the German State" where treated, that includes; Jews, Gays, Polish, Reisistance Fighter, etc. Good movie will watch it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, but a great show that is well fixed on his feet.
Verified PurchaseDirecting for a good solid screenplay (by Gore Vidal and a young Francis Ford Coppola). Stellar cast .. Beautiful film, minimally fictionalized historical reconstruction, directed attention and great scenes of clashes popular, but Either what is most striking, as is obvious ¡§A fantastic cast. Monsterous !!!!!
Belmondo, Delon, Welles, Trintignant, Perkins, Douglas (Kirk), Montand, Michel Piccoli the important roles are those of the first three, the others appear or less time in the film.
At times a bit 'boring, but nothing excessive or pretentious.
Actually, this film does not reflect the reality of history. Paris is not drinking then what be so brave. The contrary. The conflict shop for other fine threads. Non-partisan documentaries, one gets the impression that Paris did not enjoy freedom even under the best ever one thing as unnatural and dangerous protection.
