Learn the essential techniques for painting from photographs with this illustrated guide by the acclaimed artist and teacher.

Many artists enjoy using photographic reference material, but while there are many advantages to this way of working, there are also unique challenges. One must learn to choose what to leave out, what to keep in, and how to adapt the scene to create a painting. In this book, Geoff Kersey introduces twenty-seven of his own paintings, explaining how they evolved from one or more photographs.

Kersey includes photographs, sketches, diagrams, details, colour charts and a wealth of tips explaining his techniques and artistic process. This volume also includes a glossary of painting terms as well as photographs for readers to interpret for themselves.

I really admire a few landscape painters but none of them have really helped me with my own progress. How they look at a scene and compose such beautiful paintings and colours was a mystery to me - like some sort of magic. This book demystifies it all. It shows the photo and original view, Geoff's compositional and value sketches (in graphite which I like) his thought processes of what to include, his choice of colours and of course his finished piece, all of which are wonderful. This is the book that is going to set me free from step by steps to having a go at my own photos which is what I really want to do. It's easy to read and follow and covers so much. Really recommend.

I haven’t had a chance to really read this book yet. It is a bit hard for a beginning painter to follow and understand.

Very informative. Good illustrations on how to use photographs as a source material for paintings. Useful tips and hints how to go about changing a photograph into a subject for a water colour. It is great to paint outside but if you want dramatic landscapes then sometimes it is necessary to work from other sources due to inclement weather. This book is useful to develop initial sketches and to see how it differs from the actual colours in the photograph. Most people take photographs for gospel but they lack the tonal range of the human eye and this book provides a list of colours as a starting point. It also illustrates how you can adapt a photograph to fit the rule of thirds or to add or subtract other subjects to make your painting have a focal point. Good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book for English Speakers... Un super bouquin pour les aquarellistes anglicistes....

Superb book for English Speakers with many examples of magnificent landscapes. Geoff Kersey is a specialist of warm tones and delicate details. I recommend this book. Geoff, see you soon for a next book!
