This KAKAMINA Blue painters tape looks similar to Frog and 3M Scotch branded tape however it doesn't have the same adhesion or paint block technology.

You get 10 rolls of 55mm wide tape for $4 a roll which is an excellent price. The tape comes wrapped in cellophane in groups of 5 rolls. The rolls are stacked and there is no plastic between each roll which makes it very difficult to separate and individual roll from the stack of 5. The adhesive between rolls bleeds out the sides making all 5 rolls stick together into one big roll. I had to cut and pry the rolls apart to separate them. This is something that I don't have to do with Frog or 3M Scotch branded Blue Painters Tape. My first impression was not good.

The KAKAMINA masking tape feels thinner and cheaper than Frog or Scotch. It feels more papery and not as stock as the name brands. The adhesive feels moderately tacky but again different than Frog or Scotch.

Performance wise I had mixed results. Adhesion was OK on most surfaces. Removal was also good as long as you removed the tape within a few days and it was not exposed to direct sunlight. If you leave the tape on too long or it gets exposure to lots of sunlight the adhesive may let go or the paper tape difficult to remove.

••• Paint Bleed •••
I had some success with this tape however I also had several areas with paint bleeding under the tape or the edges not being as sharp as Frog or 3M Tape. Frog Tape and 3M have a technology called Paint Block that works really well, other tapes such as this one do not have Paint Block technology built in.

Overall this is a decent Budget Priced, painters tape. I would use it for commercial projects or jobs where the occasional paint bleed may not be critical. I would also use this tape as a general Masking tape in place of Yellow masking tape where you don't want very strong adhesive. For critical painting project or jobs where you want your edges to be sharp, defined and error free with no paint bleed, I would still recommend the name brands 3M and Frog.

I use this KAKMINA tape as general masking tape for non painting projects and as a second or third row to mask larger area. I use Frog or 3M for the critical EDGE row and then overlap successive rows when a larger area is needed to be masked with this KAMAMINA tape. I also use this KAKAMINA tape for taping drop cloths and poly to painted surfaced and for marking deficiency spots on jobs.

Bottom line - OK Painters tape but not a replacement for Frog or 3M in my opinion.

Just the right amount of tack to stick and easy to pull off with no residue. What I like about this brand is that it is a great width so I don't have to double up and is a bit thicker than regular painters tape ensuring that the tape does not tear when you are applying and has a better ability of keeping a straight line. I am a casual painter and have a very steady hand for cutting in areas but sometimes you need some assistance. I also use this for caulking (a lot of) and taping things together to be glued. This pack will last me a long time and it's perfect!

You need a special type of tape when painting as you want something that is easy to remove and does not leave a residue. This tape meets both of those requirements when used properly - meaning that you should not leave the tape in place for too long.

The trick to a good result is to remove your painters tape quickly to avoid a sticky residue and/or paint bleeding under the edge.

Recommended, buying in bulk does save you money!

✅ Tact is good and not overdone. The tape seems to adhere predictably when the surface is properly prepared.
✅ I found that removing the tape soon after a paint lay down provided the smoothest lines. Your experience might be different.
✅ Off-gassing odor is low.
✅ Value is fair and at the time of this review one roll was $4.50 Cdn when bought in quantity of 10.

❌ At least in my case using latex-based primer and paint, leaving it on too long tends to leave a somewhat rough paint edge.

SUMMARY:

The product is a bit of a less refined old-school formula compared to 2025 available premium offerings. However, this product still works once you learn how it is best used to meet your application. You can also save some stash in the process.

Overall I like this tape, it's easy to tear and stays put as long as I need it to then removes fairly easily. Not sure what else you want from painter's tape. If you need tape and you buy this tape, unless you're some soft of mega professional painter you'll like this tape.
