The knife comes with a hard shelled nylon holster which can be attached to your belt via the loop on the back and the snap button keeps the blade securely in place. The knife has a full tang design that gives it increased strength when digging or prying. I found that the edges of the tang were actually deburred and slightly rounded off which makes it much more comfortable to hold in the event the handle scales were not made to size (as I’ve seen on a lot of other knives). The blade has a dagger point with one side serrated and the other with a standard edge with a bottle cap opener built in. When I first saw the product photos I though the blade was symmetrical from one side to the other, but I found that the side with the measurements is concave and is similar to a garden trowel. This allows it to dig and “shovel” dirt easier with the concave shape. I tried the paper cut test using the straight edge side, but I had some issues as the concave shape of the blade makes cutting paper only possible left-handed with a right to left stroke. It doesn’t work well for right-handed users on the left to right stroke. It will work in any direction for stems, vines and other vegetation. The serrated edge is very aggressive and should make easy work of any branch or other thicker/denser items. The wooden handle is nicely shaped and fits comfortably in my hand. It has a hanging hole which can double as a hole for a lanyard. The scales are attached via hex screws making them easy to tighten or loosen if needed. Overall, the Perwin Hori Hori garden knife will work well in the garden. It’s comfortable to hold, and has a good sized blade allowing to cut, saw and dig without issues. The full tang design will ensure it will not bend or break prying a rock out of the ground. When not in use it stores securely in the holster. I think this will be a great addition to your gardening toolbox.
This is a higher priced item because of the brand name. Haven’t used it yet, but it’s sturdy and well-made. I should be able to pass this on to my children.
I love this knife. It's the only gardening tool that I use. I use the knife to dig and measure and I also use it when I am weeding, it is great for getting all the weeds out of the flower bed. I slide the knife beside the weed so that I can get all the roots out. While I am weeding, I am also loosening up the soil. I have had other knives like this one and the reason I bought it was because it had the added feature of being able to cut rope. The knife is really solid and the case for the knife is excellent quality as well.
The smooth handle is the best part. It’s solid, a good weight and balanced. The case, though better than the fake butterscotch coloured vegan leather ones that come with the other 鶹 Hori Hori knives, fell apart right away. (This is my 3rd knife in 5 years - the other 2 were lost in space. If you’re a hardcore, on your knees weed killer, you’ll like this one. It’s worth every penny so a I’d suggest trashing the silly holster and having a custom leather sheath made for it.
Walnut wood handle and the steel blade is thick for a gardening knife.
The only con is that I had to wipe the wood handle because a little bit of stain was coming off and giving me a tiny skin allergic reaction. I then decided to wet sand it a tiny bit in certain spots with a piece of 600 grit sandpaper sheet until smooth. Then added some olive oil to the wood. I may clear finish the wood handle in the future.
