Situada en Venecia en el siglo XVI, Desdémona, profundamente enamorada de Otelo, decide escaparse con él a pesar de la desaprobación de Brabancio, su padre. El moro Otelo es un brillante general de la guardia veneciana que, tras elegir a Casio como su lugarteniente, enfurece y provoca a Yago, su alférez. Dejándose llevar por incontrolables celos y furia, Yago comienza a elaborar un plan para deshacerse de Casio y vengarse de Otelo, lo que lo consagra como el maestro más consumado del engaño en la historia de la literatura. Así es que se desarrollan una serie de eventos que pone al amor de Otelo y Desdémona al riesgo de los celos y la traición de los cuáles la tragedia es la última salida.
