Care of Stylus Ortofon

Care of Stylus

With proper care we find that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours.

Proper care is comprised of the following:

• Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.

• Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine

antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.

• Proper adjustment of alignment, antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.

• Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.

Ortofon 2M Series

Ortofon 2M series styli interchangeability

Physically 2M styli will fit on alternative 2M cartridges bodies, but 2M Series cartridges’ engines, coils and magnets configurations are not quite identical:

Red and Blue are identical, so are the Bronze and Black and so are the true mono variants 2M Mono and 2M 78

Ortofon 2M Series

History of the 2M Series

The 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.

Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.

The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM.

The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount.

In the beginning was the soundtrack

On the 9th of October 1918, the two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) founded the Electrical Phono Film Company with a few capable and foresighted businessmen who would support the organization financially.

Their aim was to explore the possibility of high-class recording and developing one of the first synchronized sound film systems in the world. Under primitive conditions, the two Danish engineers and their small staff had to solve a number of what were considered insuperable problems.

Advancements in Sound

The differences among the 2M variants concern three primary areas: engine, body material and stylus profile.

The entire 2M Series features Ortofon’s split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon and were originally presented in the 500 and Ortofon OM Super Series.

The 2M 78, 2M Mono, 2M Red and 2M Blue use an improved engine, which provides an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy.

The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver-plated copper wire. The cartridge body material used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.

Product of Denmark

Today Ortofon is a micro-mechanical powerhouse, which develops, manufactures and markets the world acclaimed Ortofon cartridges and components for the hearing aids industry.

Reading through online reviews I was really hoping I wouldn’t be bamboozled into buying snake oil. Pretty expensive for such a tiny item. I was also ready to give the Blue a fair (30hr) break-in period. I was pleasantly surprised 1) how easy it was to swap the stylus and 2) it sounded amazing right out of the gate. The Red is great don’t get me wrong (great back up stylus) but the blue has more detail, more acute bass and more depth. I just spent the night AB testing vinyl vs lossless streaming and vinyl with this stylus has more ‘soul’. I love both but this stylus just makes you want to play all your favourite records again. And yes…you will hear things you didn’t hear before (which I honestly didn’t believe before) Speakers: Montor Audio Silver 200 7G Turntable: Fluance RT83 (now 85 with upgrades). I installed this on a project x2 that originally came with silver cartridge, I kept the original base and it just clipped replacing the silver. What a difference excellent dynamics tone and soundstage, on my setup (Bryston-keff) I am very happy. No problem of sterility with my setup and would buy again in this price range. If you want something better go with bronze complete cartridge but I wouldn't go to black, just to revealing on the quality of your vinyl. Enjoy.

No stranger to the Ortofon 2M Red as it was the stylus featured on my Project Debut Carbon Evo turntable which I enjoyed. After moving to a Technics SL-1500C turntable (also featuring a 2M Red from factory) I wanted to hear "the next level". Since the 2M Red and 2M Blue share the same cartridge, one only needs to buy this "replacement stylus" to enjoy the upgrade. And yes, it IS worthy - the improvement over the 2M Red is noticeable in terms of sound quality, overall smoothness, and the background hiss/noise is lower. Highly recommended.

I bought this to replace the stylus on the 2m Silver. The 2m Silver is a decent cartridge. It came pre-installed on my recently purchased Pro-Ject X2, and I was enjoying it all the while knowing I would upgrade the cartridge at some point. That is one of the fun things about owning a good turntable: you can tinker with the sound over the years of ownership and continually breath new life into your music collection. The 2m Blue stylus is definitely an upgrade! Everything sounds better: more detail, more definition and tighter response in the treble and bass. I also noticed that surface noise is not as noticeable. No cartridge will eliminate surface noise completely, and I still hear some pops and clicks, but there is a noticeable difference between the two styli. I think because the soundstage is enhanced, the noise seems further in the background. I found myself much more immersed in the music and not being distracted by the surface noise like I was with the Silver. I swapped them back and forth to compare as best I could (it only takes seconds to swap them) and the differences were not subtle like on some compressed Youtube videos. In person, on a decent system, the differences are substantial. If you are thinking about swapping out your 2m Red or Silver stylus for the Blue, you can't go wrong. My system cost approximately $5000, $230 Cdn is not a lot of money in an already expensive hobby (unless you are strapped for cash, which I have been in my earlier life as a student). There is no doubt it will make your listening time much more pleasurable.
I hope this was useful for anyone deliberating on this kind of decision.

As a serious audiophile, I’m always looking to make small, but significant tweaks to my system. I bought this to fit on an existing Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge mounted on a Pro-ject 2Xperience SB turntable. The 2M Silver’s stylus is a direct match to the 2M Red - which is a great cartridge in its own right. The addition of the 2M Blue has completely opened up the sound of my record collection! Deeper bass, wider soundstage, and less “edginess” compared to the original. The difference is in the actual stylus tip, which is a nude elliptical vs. a simple elliptical. This cartridge shines with jazz, rock, and classical music. Very simple to replace (on an existing Ortofon cartridge). Highly recommended! A noticeable improvement for a modest sum of money!

I was concerned about whether a Blue Stylus would improve things enough for me to like my 2M Red generator. It didn't. I now ❤️ the combo of the Red generator with a Blue stylus, and it's especially suited to my backup turntable, which is now subjectively about equal in sonics with my #1. Probably not so much to the graph brigade, just to suit my tastes and speakers.
Not sure how it does so- the same turntable doesn't bring out more to the party going from elliptical to nude elliptical with other cartridges.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Higher End Stylus
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2025

The Ortofon Blue stylus is a very nice upgrade from the red model. A lot of higher end turntables utilize the red stylus which is a very good high end starter stylus. The blue is the next step up utilizing a nude elliptical diamond which creates more detail and clarity over the red. If the manufacturer uses Ortofon this cartridge and stylus is used on even higher end models. Ortofon makes even higher end cartridges over the blue but now you are getting into sky high priced equipment. In my opinion the blue will make even seriously listeners pleased with the beautiful sound it creates. The best part is you can use the blue stylus in the red cartridge. In this setup the red and blue stylus is interchangeable. The upgrade is in the diamond needle not the cartridge.
