Not much needs to be said about the movie itself, it was one half of a phenomenon at the box office and is a biopic so as with Titanic you kind of know how it ends. Having seen this in both IMAX 1570 and IMAX GT Laser I've been excited to be able to watch this at home on my ISF-calibrated 77" OLED. Hearing Chris Nolan discuss the physical media release shortly before release date added to the excitement. I knew we would get expanding aspect ratios like the other 4K releases that had scenes filmed with IMAX film camera like Interstellar and Dunkirk, and I was ready to enjoy a powerful surround mix. It delivers! As with Interstellar, your subwoofers are going to put a big smile on your face if they're as good as or better than mine (dual Paradigm Servo 15v2). Lots of low energy, plummeting down to sub-20Hz depths, very nice. The audio mix is great, I had no difficulty discerning audio here nor did I at the cinema unlike with Tenet which I did need the subtitles on a few times to understand words I wasn't familiar with or thick accents like Priya.

Is it a perfect 5-stars? No, for some reason this home release only features HDR10 while the movie did receive a Dolby Vision colour-grading that you can find in the 4K streaming versions. Why? I don't know. The bit-rate here is clearly much better than streaming, physical 4K UHD discs are capable of Dolby Vision and many releases contain it, and the audio here is massively better than lossy streaming surround - but it misses that one feature. Fortunately some out there have remuxed the UHD video with the DoVi metadata and we get the best of both worlds but that's still not legal and because of this we aren't owning the best version possible.

It's a minor quibble, not worth more than 1/4-star and therefore doesn't reduce my score, but it's worth mentioning.

The special features on the Blu-ray Disc contained within are fabulous and riveting - the entire hour of the making of featurette covers so much interesting ground and features interviews with endless members of the fabulous cast. The 65mm B&W film standalone feature was also very informative. This was an easy buy for me, very happy to finally have Oppenheimer at home on 4K Ultra HD.

I was really looking forward to this film, as I'd seen and heard so much about it during the "Summer of Barbenheimer!" Having previously read American Prometheus, I was hoping to see a cinematic representation of the flow in the book, but instead what we got was a chopped up mis-assembly of the story, with so many flashbacks and flashforwards that it became difficult to keep track of where you were chronologically, and the story subsequently lost the excitement and pace around the development of the nuclear bomb, and got bogged down too early in the post-war - i.e. AFTER the bomb - melee and the disgusting but typically American treatment of Oppenheimer.

Don't get me wrong - the film is a superb cinematic achievement, and many of the character performances are truly brilliant. I just didn't care for how the story was arranged. It was as if the creation of the nuclear bomb played second fiddle to the machinations of the scientists and organizations involved in the destruction of Oppenheimer's career and credibility than the massive achievement in creating the "Weapon to End All Wars."

Having said all this, I do hope the film goes on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, as it is light-years ahead of any other cinematic offering for 2023!
