I see previous Vine reviews, so I won't reiterate them. Some of the observations I note are claims made by the manufacturer (MFR) in enclosed literature, but they appear reasonable

1. Unless plugged into a USB-A connection, the fan requires either 3 or 6 D-cells to operate. MFR states fan operates best with USB supplied power, then with alkaline D cells. MFR suggests that rechargeable D-batts will not operate as consistently since they only provide 1.2V, not the 1.5V of alkalines. You will need a Philips-head screwdriver to gain access to the batt compartment, or (long-barreled) to remove the fan cover to clean. A USB-A / MiniUSB cable is included in the box I received, and is standard.

2. Batts fit VERY snugly into the channels in the fan base. Be careful using used batts, or leaving batts in the fan when it is not in use. If the batts corrode, they may be very difficult or impossible to remove. Easiest way to remove batts is to remove center batt, then tip fan to one side or the other and shake GENTLY to allow them to drop by gravity.

3. The fan design is thoughtful, with many useful features. Dual lights operate at variable lumen levels, and have an SOS feature available. The fan is variable speed, not preset (1/2/3), which may aid in power consumption or comfort. There is a timer feature (4 presets, 30 min. to 8 hr). Perhaps most valuable are LED indicator lights to show 25 to 100% power availability. The old D batts I initially installed immediately came up at 25%, but were still enough to operate the fan and lights simultaneously at full power.

I have experience with only one other battery-fan, a poorer older design (not by this MFR) with higher power requirements and no other features. I see other units on AMAZON which the reader should view, to make an informed purchase. There are less expensive fans here if the features mentioned here are not of interest. In the event of a hurricane power outage, however (my primary concern), I'll be glad to have the batt level indicator so I can manage performance. And the USB cable/connection is a definite plus.

Based on search of other fans / prices, I give this fan 4 stars. A fifth star if the price was not $46, but instead in the mid-high 30's.
