- Reviewed in Canada on May 30, 2016Verified PurchaseWorked pretty good. I used it to replace valve seals on an AMC 401 V8 and it did the job. There's a little learning curve to figure out where to stick the grips into to be able to compress enough, and you need strong hands to crank on it. To make it better, they should have a way to use a socket wrench on it or something with a bit more leverage.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 14, 2016Verified PurchaseLet it be known I had not removed valve springs until today so my experience with spring compressors is equal to 0.
I watched some YouTube videos on how to use it and was able to compress and remove the 12 springs from my Chevy 250 Inline 6 head in about an hour. I took my time and didn't feel impeded by the tool at any point.
Some thoughts though, get a magnet to remove the little valve keepers as sticking your digits between the claws of this thing is risky at best. My stock springs were fairly tame but using this with performance springs could be harder, but if you take your time it'd work just fine I'm sure.
I've read comments about people wanting a nut on the top so a wrench could be used to turn it. I think it would be more likely to slip off the springs if a wrench was used as the torque at the top would pull the claws off. Either way, I didn't find it that hard by hand. Maybe wear some gloves?
It's not flimsy at all and seems well made for a cheap tool. I gave it a 5 star rating as its a universal tool that allowed me to get a job done for very little money.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 22, 2017Verified PurchaseI purchased this tool specifically to remove the valve springs on my 1982 Honda GL1100 motorcycle. I needed to replace all of the valve stem seals, but I wanted to avoid the additional time and cost associated with head removal. The GL1100 engine has 2 springs per valve - both mounted concentrically on the valve stem, the weaker spring inside the stronger outer spring. Unfortunately, the gripper jaws did not extend far enough into the spring coil to "reliably" compress both springs. Furthermore, the spring grip jaws are "offset" such that one jaw grips a lower coil on one side of the spring, and the other jaw grips a coil one or two turns higher on the same spring. I am at a loss to explain the advantage of this "offset". In my case, I was unable to insert the jaws on the lowest turns of the spring because the coils were tightly spaced. When I finally did get both jaws on each side of the spring, the "offset" resulted in incomplete spring compression and I was unable to remove the keepers.
However, this is definitely a well-built, well-designed quality tool. I suspect it should work well for many automotive applications, but GL1100 owners beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Taiwanese piece
Verified PurchaseMade in Taiwan, not China, which is a big plus in my book. I changed valve springs on a set of Ford 390 heads with this and it worked great. Seems like a quality tool for occasional jobs, and it doesn't take up a lot of tool box space. Good for the DIY-er on a budget who also doesn't want to buy Chinese junk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works
Verified PurchaseWorks but the star shaped handle isn't super nice to your hands. I have rough callous hands and this sucker can bite into and/or be abrasive to the skin. I wore a single nitrile glove and it tore the glove off of my hands. If this thing had a rubber skin handle, it'd be perfect.
Maybe I got unlucky and got one that wasn't sanded down or properly machined? Perhaps you might not have the same issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got the job done on my AMC360!
Verified PurchaseWorked but took some getting used to. Towards the end of the project the top handle was getting quite loose. I expect to have to weld this for the next time I have to use it. I might weld a sacrificial socket to the top to make it quicker to use haha. Wear a mechanics glove and it saves your hands.
