    Seit 7. Juni 2024 ist das britische Historiendrama One Life von James Hawes fürs Heimkino erhältlich. In den Hauptrollen sind Sir Anthony Hopkins und Johnny Flynn als alter und junger Sir Nicholas Winton zu sehen. Ob mit One Life ein würdiges und gefühlvolles Denkmal für Sir Nicholas Winton realisiert werden konnte oder dem Zuschauer am Ende nur ein langatmig-belehrendes Biopic erwartet, möchte ich euch in meiner neuesten Kritik verraten.

    Die Historienverfilmung, die auf einer Biografie von Nicholas Tochter Barbara Winton basiert, erzählt die wahre Geschichte von Nicholas Winton, der kurz vor dem Ausbruch des 2. Weltkriegs 669 Kindern jüdischen Glaubens bzw. Herkunft aus der Tschechoslowakei vor dem Holocaust rettete. Seinen mutigen, aber ebenso ehrwürdigen Entschluss fasste Winton, als er 1938 die Tschechoslowakei besuchte und in Prag auf Familien in Armut traf, die vor dem Aufstieg der Nazis geflohen waren. Auch dort müssen die Familien mit dem Einmarsch der Nazis das Schlimmste befürchten. Nicholas wird mit der Leiterin des Prager Büros des Britischen Komitees für Flüchtlinge aus der Tschechoslowakei, (kurz BCRC), Doreen Warriner, bekannt gemacht.

    Dabei beschließt er aufgrund der miserablen Bedingungen, die er vorfand, die Rettung der dort lebenden jüdischen Kinder zu realisieren. Mithilfe seiner Mutter bezwingt er so bürokratische Stolpersteine, sammelt Spenden und vermittelt die Kinder an Pflegefamilien in England. Ein Wettstreit gegen die Zeit nimmt so seinen Lauf, da jederzeit die Deportation der Kinder drohen könnte! So viel zur Vorgeschichte, die in Rückblenden als zweiter Erzählstrang eingeführt wird.

    In seinem zuerst eingeführten und später wieder aufgegriffenen Erzählstrang fokussiert sich die Geschichte allerdings auf das Jahr 1988. Nicholas bringt sein Büro auf Vordermann und entdeckt dabei alte Unterlagen seiner Rettungsaktion, die er für das BCRC mit Fotos und Listen der geretteten Kinder dokumentiert hat. Dabei macht sich Nicholas trotz seiner großen Tat Vorwürfe, da er keine weiteren Kinder retten konnte. Seine Unterlagen gelangen schließlich in die Hände des Produktionsteams der BBC TV-Show That’s Life! die Nicholas in ihr Format einladen! Dort kann er innerhalb von zwei Besuchen endlich mit den Schuldgefühlen seiner Vergangenheit aufräumen, und es kommt letztlich zu einem ehrwürdig-ergreifenden TV-Moment, der Fernsehgeschichte schrieb!

    One Life führt den Zuschauer jedenfalls durch eine emotional fesselnde Achterbahn der Gefühle, die ihre Spannung durchgehend beizubehalten weiß. Angefangen im Jahr 1988 und einem über 70-jährigen Nicholas Winton, wird die Geschichte mit zuerst kleinen und schließlich größeren und eindringlichen Rückblenden angereichert, die Nicholas Winton von der Idee bis hin zur Rettungsaktion begleiten. Erst zum Ende hin wird dabei auch das Jahr 1988 als Erzählstrang intensiver beleuchtet. Trotz der aufgezeigten Bürokratie zur Realisierung der Kindertransporte verzettelt sich der Film darin nicht, da der Fokus vor allem auf die zwischenmenschlichen Aspekte gelegt wird. Dies gelingt vor allem in vielen Szenen, die Nicholas Winton in seiner aufopfernden Überzeugungsarbeit zur Rettung der Kinder bei den Behörden zeigen.

    Anthony Hopkins verkörpert seine Rolle dabei absolut aufrichtig und authentisch. So schafft er es auch, seine emotionalen Höhepunkte innerhalb der geplagten Momente von Selbstzweifeln mit dem Zuschauer auf herzergreifende Weise zu teilen! Ebenso gelingt es Johnny Flynn, dem jungen Nicholas Winton allen voran Schaffenskraft und aufopferungsvolle Willenskraft mit Hingabe bis zur Selbstaufgabe glaubwürdig zu verleihen. Helena Bonham Carter, die Nicholas Wintons Mutter Babette verkörpert, darf schließlich als selbstbestimmte Frau brillieren. Sie gibt ihrem Sohn immer wieder Rückendeckung und vermittelt konsequent, aber dennoch warmherzig zwischen den Fronten. Lena Olin, welche die Rolle von Wintons Ehefrau Grete spielt, fungiert schließlich als mitfühlend-unterstützende Fortführung der Mutter im Erzählstrang von 1988. Hinzu kommt weiterhin ein sehr stimmiger und berührend-mitreißender Soundtrack, der die gezeigten Filmmomente mit dem nötigen Nachdruck begleitet.

    Fazit: One Life schafft es, so Sir Nicholas Winton und seiner mitreißenden und berührenden Lebensgeschichte ein filmisch würdiges Denkmal zu setzen, dass vor allem die zwischenmenschlichen Aspekte immer im Blick behält. Anthony Hopkins dringt dabei in Wintons Gefühlswelt hindurch und porträtiert einen Mann, der trotz seiner großen Taten nie sich selbst in den Mittelpunkt stellte. Vielmehr rückte er das direkte Handeln in dringlichsten Notlagen in den Fokus. Damit ist er noch heute ein Vorbild, das hoffentlich immer einen ehrenvollen Platz in unserer Gegenwart behält. Und das mit einer Tat, die man hoffentlich nie zur Debatte stellt.
