Step-by-step instructions

1. Seed Preparation
Lotus seeds have a hard outer shell that needs to be scratched (weakened) so that they can absorb water and germinate. (To facilitate our customers, we have already prepared the seeds so you don't have to do this again).

2. germination
Container: Fill a glass or bowl with warm water (24-29°C).
Process:
Place scarified seeds in the water.
Change the water daily to avoid mould.
The seeds swell and germinate within 5-14 days. Discard seeds that float or do not germinate after 2 weeks.

3. Planting germinated seeds
Once the sprouts are 5-10 cm long and develop small leaves:
Jar: Use a wide, shallow pot (30+ cm diameter, no drainage holes).
Soil: Heavy clay or clay (avoid organically enriched mixtures).
Steps:
Fill the pot with 7-10 cm soil.
Gently press the germinated seed into the soil so that the leaves remain above the surface.
Add a thin layer of gravel to stabilise the seedling.
Fill the container slowly with 5-10 cm of water (use dechlorinated water or rainwater).

4. Growing conditions
Sunlight: Full sun (6-8 hours daily)
Water temperature: keep the water warm (21-29°C). In cooler climates, use a pond heater or black container to absorb heat.
Water depth: maintain a water height of 5-15 cm above the ground.

5. Fertilisation.
Start fertilising as soon as the plant has 3-4 floating leaves.
Use aquatic plant tablets (with high phosphorus content) every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.

6. Transplant into a larger container
Once the plant has grown out of its pot (usually after 1 year), move it into a larger container or pond.
Treat the roots carefully so as not to damage the tuber.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will it bloom? Lotus plants grown from seeds take about 8 moths to flower.

Why do the leaves turn yellow? Over fertilization, cold water or too little sunlight.

Can I plant the seeds directly in a pond? Not recommended - start in containers to protect young plants.

Pro Tip: Lotus seeds can remain viable for decades if stored in a cool, dry place. With proper care, you'll enjoy serene blooms and symbolic beauty in your water garden.
