Product description

Nintendo's Wii video game system (pronounced "we") is designed to attract people, regardless of their age or video game experience, to sit down and play together--whether they're in the same room or on different sides of the globe. The system's name reflects this simple idea. It's easily pronounced in a variety of languages, and the distinctive spelling suggests two players side by side. The two Wii features Nintendo thinks will create new levels of gaming community are built-in Wi-Fi access, supported by a new online gaming service, and Wii's intuitive, wireless, motion-sensitive game controller.

As with every new console release, much of the buzz surrounds the specs. The system boasts 512 MB of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports, and a slot for SD memory expansion. Wii's technological heart -- a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named "Broadway" and a graphics chipset from ATI code-named "Hollywood" -- are said to deliver stunning performance. Instead of a tray, Wii uses a single, self-loading media bay that will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system, as well as Nintendo GameCube discs.

The real revolution in this system, though, is its controller, called the Wii Remote. Shaped like a TV remote, it's been designed to be easily used by beginners and pros alike. Sensors determine the Wii Remote's position is in 3-D space, which means that racing-game steering and a tennis swing, for example, are done through movements of your hand rather than by just your thumbs. What's more, a tiny speaker built into the Wii Remote promises some interactive surround sound experiences. The controller also has a force feedback "Rumble" feature and an expansion port for use with accessories, such as the Nunchuck, which adds an analog thumbstick and trigger buttons. An adapter that fits over the Wii's remote will be available for those who prefer the feel of a traditional controller. The Wii Remote communicates via the Bluetooth wireless standard. Up to four remotes can connect to Wii.

An Outstanding Games Launch Line-up

Each Wii will come with a game compilation called "Wii Sports," including tennis, golf, baseball and bowling games, that will show off the console's intuitive new controller. In addition to this, at least thirty titles are scheduled for release in U.S. by year's end; about half of that by launch. They are estimated to list at $49.99. Launch games include:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • Excite Truck
  • Trauma Center: Second Opinion
  • Madden NFL 07
  • Need for Speed: Carbon
  • Elebits
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
  • Metal Slug Anthology
  • Rayman: Raving Rabids
  • Red Steel
Wii also offers superb backward compatibility -- the cornerstone of Nintendo's all-access approach. This new console will play fan-favorite games from Nintendo's 20-year-old library. The drive is compatible with GameCube discs, and select Nintendo titles from the original NES of the 1980s all the way through the Nintendo 64 will be available through for download through the "Virtual Console" for $5 and $10 respectively. To support the backwards compatibility the Wii includes four ports for classic Nintendo GameCube controllers and two slots for Nintendo GameCube Memory Cards. As if that weren't enough, the Virtual Console will also make available a few titles from SNES console contemporaries, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16.

A number of Wi-Fi-enabled titles are in development that will employ Nintendo's newly-announced wireless gaming service, WiiConnect24. This worldwide network promises Nintendo players a comfortable, inviting environment in which they can gather and compete. The always-on network will deliver game updates and surprises, even when the Wii is powered down. And as you would expect, Wii will be able to communicate with the Nintendo DS mobile gaming system wirelessly.

Missing items controller and console stand & price drop occasionally
Console work, but a few items are missing - 1 wii controller & joy stick remote as seen in the advertisement (which see 2 wii controller and joy stick remote). Minor visual scratches on the console and the console stand is missing. Overall it works, but buyer beware as this is a third party seller, and amazon make no effort to replace damage or missing parts. BUY WITH CAUTION!!

Came in with all the necessary cables and other components. Wii remote and nunchuck works great (so far) and the console itself is not in awful shape. I see a lot of reviews mention that theirs didn't come with any games, which is what they 'advertised'. I'm willing to play devils advocate and guess that they failed to read the fine print from the individual sellers under 'see all buying options'. In my case, they stated that everything was tested and that it came with all required cables, sensor bar, and a nunchuck. They also mentioned that the bundle didn't include any games.

It's a paperweight for now while I get a few games for it, but overall a great buy.

The wii console I received is in good working order. Definitely some cosmetic issues but nothing crazy, it was expected as I know it’s not brand new. I ordered from YourCanadianGameStore and had great customer service. Arrived within about 4 or 5 days with the sensor bar, all required cords, nunchuk and remote. The remote ended up not working so I contacted the seller and received fantastic customer service. I was contacted >10 minutes and given the option of a refund for the remote or a new one shipped out to me the next day. Great service from YourCanadianGameStore!

This item is sold via third party seller. It took longer than usual Prime to ship in my experience.

The item arrived; working with signs of use. Photos included. A few light material scratches also some stains here and there, but nothing that I wasn’t able to get out on my own.

It did not come with the sensor (which I originally did not realize that I needed for the controllers to work). I ordered a new one on 鶹 and it arrived the next day.

It came with quite a few attachments. A rechargeable battery pack and dock for one of the controllers, two nunchucks, one gun, and two controllers.

But, no sensor. If my stepchildren had opened this gift on Christmas day, without it being in working order, this would’ve been one of the most disappointing experiences of my modern life.

Luckily, with the addition of the sensor, it works!

After a little mess up (mostly my fault) I had to get the Good condition of this Wii over the Very Good one. Even with that being said, the console is perfectly working. The only slightly faulty thing is either the Wii Controller or the Sensor bar (I can't tell because I don't have a spare Wii Controller to test which is at fault). When aiming it at the sensor bar, it sometimes does little hops and spazzes around in a small area. Also, the sound coming through the controller is a bit muffled/glitchy at times, but it still works perfectly. My only real worry is that I won't be able to play games where I need to be aiming at the screen a lot, but it's still nothing but a worry.

To top it off, when I ordered this, they said it would arrive at 9pm, but it arrived at 11:30am. I couldn't even believe it. It was absurdly amazing. Thank you!

    The Unit

This specific set (the main unit, one Wii remote, and _Wii Sports_) is enough to get you started, but really, it should be viewed as only partial. Because only a couple games can be played with multiple people and one Wii remote, it would be helpful if one more remote came with the unit. Check for prices and you will quickly see why! It's not really a complete system with only one remote. Most people will likely want at least two.

    Disabilities and the Wii

Much has been said about the Wii being used in retirement homes with the elderly, as well as with the disabled. Due to health issues, our family has now been doing activities together that we haven't been able to do in years. However, playing most of the games in a sitting position is difficult, and people who lack motor skills will have a difficult time with some functions, such as pushing buttons at once or letting go of a button at the right time. Coordination is important, and this has proven a bit of a challenge at times. When used with a wheelchair, individuals may find they need to remove the chair's armrest, which may or may not be safe for certain users.

    Wii Sports

_Wii Sports_ features five games: baseball, boxing, bowling, golf, and tennis. Game play is easy and mostly straightforwardly similar to real-life play of each game. The graphics on _Wii Sports_ are cute, but not what one might expect in a game today. The backgrounds are more impressive than the "Miis" (little personalized icons). The baseball game even removes the arms and legs of Miis!

Some of the "filler," especially in the baseball game, seems slow, and the filler can't always be skipped by pressing a button, and this grows frustrating at times. Instructions on how to play the games and what different on-screen icons mean is somewhat vague at times.

What I really enjoy is the fitness test, which can be taken daily. There are little mini practice games for each sport, such as batting practice. Once these are played, they are unlocked and show up at random in the fitness test. You can track your progress and improvement over time. This game also grows with you by saving your progress and giving you more difficult computer opponents as your skill level progresses.

    Adding On

If you already have a Nintendo GameCube, you're in luck. Nintendo has made it so that much of what you have is likely compatible for play on the Wii--with the Wii operating as a GameCube of sorts. If you don't already have GameCube components, getting the Wii is also like getting a GameCube, though you will need to buy extra components to set it up as such (memory card, controllers, and games). Unfortunately, not much information is supplied by Nintendo on how this works, and it took research before I realized that the Wii remote could not double as a controller for GameCube games. On the positive side, people are getting rid of these items and they are selling for low used prices now.

At the time of this review, Nintendo has upgraded only the add-on units (such as the Wii controller and _Wii Fitness_) rather than the main unit, which is a welcome change from the way technology becomes obsolete the moment you purchase it.

Aside from games and accessories that can be added on, the Wii also has Internet connectivity that Nintendo is still (at the time of this writing) actively updating.

Overall, we have found the Wii to be a welcome unit in our home that has enabled us to have family time and lots of fun. I hope you enjoy it, too.
