    This is one of the best adult animes ever created and in my top three personally … this and Akira constantly alternate haha - but - what u came here for - it really does look amazing on blu ray. Why anime is so damn hard to find proper - and affordable - releases for is just ridiculous. But if you’ve seen it before - it blows any previous version away. And if you haven’t - and uber violent super ninjas sound like fun - you’ll have a good time

    Ninja Scroll is a tightly plotted, cleverly characterised, and beautifully made anime that shows what you can do with limited resources and a lot of imagination.

    A wandering Ronin finds himself trapped between warring factions, and an old enemy. There's a lot of mystical ninja skills, villains with idiosyncratic powers, and sword fights -- and a few adult situations that probably fall into the politically incorrect category. Over the last twenty years I've watched this movie many times, for the story, characters, design, and the techniques -- watching what Japanese animators can do with ten frames, reminds me what American animation can't do with a whole movie.

    The Blu-Ray quality is excellent, the sound is good, and there's a commentary track (in Japanese with English subtitles) . Great value.

    It is through this movie that I've been initiated to Japanese anime and it remains, for me, one of the best. I haven't watched it for many years before I finally decided to buy it and I almost feel sad that I waited so long as it brought back great memories as I found it to be as amazing and entertaining as the first time I watched it.

    The story is fairly simple and straightforward as one epic fight leads to another but it's very intense, well thought and it's animated beautifully. The combat choreographs are diverse and entertaining and the quality of the image is beautiful and clean.

    Be aware that it's very violent, bloody, gore and sexually explicit so if you intend to show it to your anime-loving kids you'd better wait a couple of years.

    On a side note, it is specified that the disc has been manufactured to be played in Canada and USA only and I had some issues playing it on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player as it wouldn't detect my location properly. I am not sure if the issue comes from the disc (as I was able to play it on my PS3) or the player (which I find crappy for many reasons) but I thought it was worth mentioning.

    Ninja Scroll is yet another film released by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Cyber City Oedo, Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust), one of my favourite anime film directors aside from Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop), Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Dead Leaves), Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion), and Hayao Miyazaki (anything he has done).
    Yoshiaki Kawajiri's known for his violent and 'mysogenistic' anime work, and Ninja Scroll is definitely no exception, as it has gratuitous nudity and lots of brutal violence.
    The film itself is about Jubei, a vagabond ninja who stumbles upon a government spy who pretty much blackmails him into fighting the seven demons of... something (I honestly forgot, I can't believe it!) and topple a plot to start a civil war in Japan. Jubei's pretty reluctant about this whole ordeal (since he's basically doing the spy's job) until he finds out that the leader of the demons is his own nemesis returned from the dead named Genma. Tagging along on this journey is the beautiful kunoichi Kagero who has a special poisonous defense mechanism that comes in handy in more than one situation (Yes, a female main character in an anime who ISN'T a useless fan service gimmick!). All of this chaos that was cleverly woven together eventually comes down to (in my opinion) one of the greatest showdowns between the main protagonist and the main villain ever animated in an anime film (and realistic, too... to a point, of course!).
    The only problem I have with this movie was that in about the first quarter of the film there is an annoying background noise effect going on (you know, the one that kind of sounds like waves on an ocean), but luckily this noise vanishes in an noticeable fashion, quickly enough as to not take away the complete enjoyment of the film. Also, I found it kind of funny how this DVD has a "WARNING: CONTAINS SCENES OF GRAPHIC VIOLENCE" thing on it when it's only 14A (which is pretty forgiving for this movie).
    Despite these minor quips, I highly recommend this movie. It's my second favourite out of the 'Big Three'.

    Quite simply one of the best anime of all time. I have owned this on VHS, DVD and now on Blu-Ray and I must say if your a fan it is well worth updating your collection. Picture and sound quality is absolutely top notch. If you have not seen this and your partial to anime this is well worth a look, but to give fair warning this is nothing like Pokemon or dragon ball z, this is adult only anime. Heavy content of sex and violence makes this definitely not for children. For fans of anime from the late 80's and the 90's will know that over the top sex scenes and ultra-violence were a big part of anime from that era. Although I realise just how silly some of it can be I must admit it is what I enjoy about it and ninja scroll offers some of the best action anime can offer. A true classic of the genre.

    For under $15 this is a must buy for anime fans. Ninja Scroll is an anime geared towards a more mature audience, and was released initially under the MANGA label. It features gory violence, and partial nudity as well as some sexual content. If you missed out on the limited edition steelbook this is a solid alternative. It's not often we see anime classics resurface on Blu-ray for such an affordable price.
