More light. More reach.

Essential f/2.8 telephoto zoom, smaller than ever.
The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is one of the most popular focal length and aperture combinations of all time. Enough reach for wildlife, sports and events, but also wide enough for portraits, landscapes and everyday shooting. The f2.8 aperture offers beautiful background blur and excellent low-light performance. All in a lightweight, compact size—and still affordable —it defies convention.
Flexibility and Capability of f/2.8
The f/2.8 difference.
The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is twice as bright as an f/4 lens. This gives you more control of light, more depth of field and more range of expression.
Beautifully blurred backgrounds.
The shallow depth of field of the f/2.8 aperture combines with the natural compression of the telephoto focal length for a stunning three-dimensional effect.
More detail in low light.
On a Full-frame/FX-format Z series camera with in-body image stabilization, you can slow down shutter speeds to gather even more light without causing camera blur or raising ISO settings.
Telephoto versatility.
Cover a huge range of shots with a single lens, from landscapes and snapshots to sports, wildlife and portraits.
Macro-style close focusing.
Get as close to your subject as 10.68 in. at the 70mm zoom position and 2.79 ft. at the 180mm zoom position for photos and videos that reveal the smallest details.
Lightweight design defies convention.
The NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is the lightest, most nimble full-frame f/2.8 telephoto zoom we've ever created. It's over 40% lighter and smaller than the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S with a smaller diameter. This is a go-to lens for being on-the-go.
Suppressed focus breathing.
When recording videos, smoothly transition focus from the foreground to the background with little change to the angle of view.
Tracks eyes with ease.
Autofocus is powered by a highly accurate stepping motor that makes virtually no mechanical noises while tracking your subject—ideal for Eye-Detection AF, recording videos and remaining silent while shooting.
Add even more reach.
Need to get closer to birds, wildlife and sports? Attach a Z series 2x or 1.4x teleconverter and increase the focal length up to 360mm (540mm equivalent on an APS-C/DX-format camera or a full frame/FX-format camera in DX-crop Mode).
Resists dust, drips and smudges.
The entire lens is sealed to prevent dust and water droplets* from getting between you and a great image. The front element features an antifouling coating that resists dirt, fingerprints, and smudges and is easy to clean.
*The lens is not guaranteed to be dust- and drip-resistant in all situations and under all conditions.
Part of an affordable trio of f/2.8 zoom lenses.

Cover a vast focal length range—from 17mm all the way up to 180mm—with consistent image quality, background blur, low-light performance and operation.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 19, 2023Verified PurchaseThis review is for Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 lens.
Preamble: When buying this lens through 鶹, be sure to check which seller you purchase from. If you want a Canadian warranty, be sure to buy from a Nikon-Canada authorized reseller.
Having used the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S VR as well as this lens -- and as much as I am a huge fan of the Z 70-200 -- let me just say: I am keeping the 70-180.
What I like:
- Useful range for event and portrait photography as well as, due to its close-focusing capabilities and smaller size, general photography! This is a multi-use lens of -- I don't wish to be hyperbolic but... -- of epic proportions. It's a lens that can be used in most any setting/ for any type of photography.
- f/2.8 constant aperture.
- Excellent optical performance through the range.
- The throw of the zoom is surprisingly compact and the lens doesn't extend tremendously.
- It's light. Few people will not take it because it's too heavy. I have the Z 24-120 and this lens, while a bit bigger (not by a lot), handles quite similarly.
- IBIS makes this lens tremendously capable in low light. I don't miss the VR for most use cases.
- It's a Nikon in terms of complete integration.
- 1:2 magnification at close focus: It may not be optically perfect at close focus (70mm) but it's good enough for certain types of images.
- The bokeh is pleasing.
- It can be used with Z TCs although I would opt for a 100-400 lens unless the latter is a range you never use.
- Sharpness across the frame is very good which helps with framing.
- Focus is fast and accurate.
Misses?
- It's not a miss for me but no Fn button (if that's of any concern to you).
- No VR but, again, I think IBIS is underrated so this isn't much of a miss.
Lots to like. For general photography or wedding/ event photography, this lens has a lot going for it. While the Z 70-200 S is a spectacular optic, understanding this lens doesn't give up much optically (nudging the Z 70-200 S toward the diminishing returns category), this lens's added close-focusing and lighter weight offer a greater appeal to me and may to you, too. Highly recommended! Consider reading the conclusion of the Photography Life review to get an impartial view.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2024Verified PurchaseIt is light and small for f/2.8 70-180mm. The image is quality is as described in countless reviews out there. The auto focus is fast and precise. Tests for decentring with Zeiss star chart and far subject at 180 / 2.8 didn't reveal any (see attached images, 100% crops from center and corners). So far so good.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2024Verified PurchaseThis lens is a Tamron lens design that has been licensed to Nikon for rebranding. This may sound unusual but Nikon did this previously with at least one other lens notably the 70-300 f4-5.6 D ED zoom introduced in 1998. What Nikon adds to Tamron’s optical design is their mechanical construction and firmware. This lens is sharp at its maximum aperture even at 180mm. It may not be quite as sharp at the edges like it’s big brother 70-200 f/2.8 Z S line but it’s half the price and 22 oz weight lighter. The only real downside is the lack of image stabilization’s but all of Nikon’s full frame cameras have in body stabilization and the latest generation of IBIS in the Zf and Z6III does a superb job. A “highly recommended” rating for me.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2024Verified PurchaseThis lens is a very solid all rounder and is great value for money.
It's fast to focus, has very good colour reproduction and good microcontrast (as all lenses will on the higher end Nikons).
It doesn't and shouldn't be expected to compare to the S line. It can't compete for detail or that "wow" factor with the Nikon 70-200, for example. In contrast, this is a very good workhorse at a great price. But if you don't need the 2.8 then give some thought to the 24-120 f/4, which is sharper, has more detail and the images "pop" more.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 31, 2023Verified PurchaseAbout half the weight, and 2/3rd the length, of my old Nikon AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VRii + FTZ adaptor.
Haven't done any proper tests but out in the field it performs just as well, if not better, in AF speed and accuracy. Don't miss the 20mm it lacks at the long end. Back isn't as sore at the end of gigs. Fits more nicely in bags and pouches too.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2024This lens is amazing. It always surprises me with amazing shots, especially at night. The images pop and have so much detail.
I recommend it a lot! I use it on the Z8 and the Z6ii.
Love this lens!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp and lightweight lens
Verified PurchaseMuch sharper than I expected being a “non-S” lens. Very pleased with the photos coming from this lens on my Z6iii. Excellent for when you don’t want to heft around the Z 70-200 mm lens despite how great that is too. Highly recommend as an experienced photographer with high expectations in perfection. Go Nikon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight fast zoom!
Verified PurchaseAs a pro, I can appreciate the weight saved on this lens vs a 70-200. Love the sharpness as well.
The barrel is a bit stiff - my only qualm - and has a lot of resistance when zooming in and out.
*** As for the seller - Adorama - the packaging was horrific. With a capital H. ***
They had one layer of bubble wrap around the lens box — leaving the top and bottom of the lens box exposed during shipping. The original Nikon box had noticeable wear from being banged up in transit — this was a sloppy decision on their part.
