Product description
A popular zoom among sports, event, and portrait photographers, the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S from Nikon is an impressively versatile telephoto lens characterized by its bright f/2.8 design. The fast maximum aperture suits working in available lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects with selective focus. The optical design incorporates a series of ED, fluorite, and SR elements, which help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity. Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Vibration Reduction further complements making sharp images by reducing the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Obsession for details. Uncompromising Zoom.
The highly-desirable 70-200mm telephoto zoom has come to the Z series. Sports, concerts, weddings, wildlife, portraiture and so much more—all with the incredible low light performance of an f/2.8 made only better by the optically superior Z mount. Optical advancements support passionate cinematographers and videographers. Class-leading close focus ability. Superior aberration suppression. And the most comprehensive optical VR image stabilization in the history of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses. The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S sets an impressive new standard for fast telephoto zoom lenses optimized for the next generation of Nikon's advanced mirrorless cameras.

NIKKOR quality at its absolute best.
Captivating resolution. Ultimate aberration control. Even at the far edges of the frame. And a new SR refractive element further combats chromatic aberrations caused by challenging short-wavelength light.

Class-leading close focusing.
At 70mm, the lens can achieve an extremely short minimum focusing distance as close as 0.5m from the subject, allowing the lens' speed and performance to shine in remarkably tight shooting scenarios.
The finest of details.
Optical image stabilization
Steadier than ever with Optical VR, effective for up to an unprecedented 5.5 stops*. Also works in conjunction with the in-body image stabilization available in select Z Series cameras.
Brilliant in low light
Exceptional combination of a bright f/2.8 aperture, high resolution NIKKOR optics and the brilliant Z mount allows for clean, sharp images and faster shutter speeds in dark scenes and interiors.
Highly-cinematic
Silent AF with virtually no shifting of the angle of view (known as focus breathing). Smooth aperture, focus or exposure adjustments via control ring. Superior optical image stabilization. Versatility of the highly useful 70-200mm focal range.
Dust and Drip resistant
Extensively sealed to keep dust and moisture out, especially around all moving parts of the lens barrel.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 11, 2023Verified PurchaseNIKON NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Z Mirrorless Cameras
Preamble: When buying this lens through 鶹, be sure to check which seller you purchase from. If you want a Canadian warranty, be sure to buy from a Nikon-Canada authorized reseller.
Having shot a variety of image formats over the course of decades, while I appreciate there's a time and a place where any camera is better than no picture at all, I have become fussy about my cameras and my choice of optics. While there are no bad cameras being made currently nor are there any bad lenses beyond a very low price point, there is still a difference between 'good' optics and exceptional ones. The Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S is one of the exceptional ones.
There are numerous reviews out there that quantify lens performance at various focal lengths and apertures. While I can't provide MTF scores, I can say this is a lens with surprisingly few weaknesses. Now, you might be surprised when I infer there are weaknesses but, before I address them, let me just say that there's no lens I know of in this category that gets more 'out of the way' in the course of shooting than this one. In other words, the lens has design features that help me get the shot I want without having to remember a sequence of steps to get there: It just does it (within its very generous design parameters).
Hits:
- Sharpness across the field of view through the focal range and range of apertures
- Weight (for this category of lens)
- Fast focus
- Constant aperture (of course)
- Flare resistant coatings
- Usable with Z teleconverters
- 77mm filter size
- Focus breathing: Not an issue
- Assignable function buttons (Fn1 & Fn2)
- Functions assignable to Control ring (default: aperture)
- Close focus distance varies with the focal length so you can get surprisingly close to your subject at the full range of focal lengths. This is fantastic!
Misses?
- Effective focal length at MFD, that is to say, at closest focus distance (aka minimum focus distance: MFD), the lens provides less magnification at a given focal length than the focal length should provide. At longer distance, the lens performs at its given focal length so no worries there. This feature plays a role in the lens not exhibiting focus breathing so the effect is for the greater good overall.
- Tripod foot: Not fully removable.
- Felt lined hood: This is a hit and a miss. Sure, it cuts down on unwanted reflections but it also gives dust and debris a place to stay put. They could have just molded little little plastic baffles instead or just left the interior of the hood 'matte'.
- No VR switch (but easy to find as a menu item)
- Focus ring is easy to turn accidentally. (Can be moved/ reassigned, however re: CSM settings)
I have a range of prime and zoom lenses. While the Z 70-200mm won't replace all of them that overlap its range -- such as my 135mm f/1.8 Art lens -- it is the most versatile 70-200mm I have ever seen. Because of that versatility, it's a lens I will use much more often.
Nikon has made many f/2.8 telephoto zooms (70/80-200mm). The current F-mount Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8E is worth considering if you still have both feet firmly planted in both F and Z mounts. On the other hand, if you see yourself migrating to Z and have a Z camera, I'd recommend just going straight to this option. It's a few bucks more but you won't look back for quite a long time.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2025Verified PurchaseI recently upgraded to the mirrorless world and am glad I did. I presently own the F-mount version of this lens and have always considered it the perfect lens. So much so that I saw no reason to update to the Z mount version after buying my first mirrorless body (Z8). Curiosity, however, finally got the best of me after reading reviews about this new version. And I bought one. And, I don't regret my decision!
This lens is designed to take advantage of the improved design capabilities of the new Z mount spec's -- the wider flange diameter and shorter distance from the rear lens element to the sensor plane, etc. In short, it's a huge improvement in lens design. And it's now my new 'perfect' lens!
Finally, I need to mention Camera Canada. I had never heard of them prior to this purchase and was very wary of purchasing something so expensive from 鶹 that wasn't shipped from their warehouse. Their reviews were great, however, so I took the risk. I worry too much! The experience was great! Camera Canada is a respected Canadian company with a great reputation. The delivery took a bit longer but was the exact day as promised. The package was delivered by Canada Post and I was able to pick it up at the local post office the same day. I actually prefer this method to 鶹's. With 鶹 I have to wait around most of the day only to receive a message late in the day that my 'promised' delivery time has been delayed. I will not hesitate to order from them again.

Previous a Pentax person, but weight difference is amazing.
Half the weight.
Glad Nikon finally got it right, weather proof, solid material and vibration control in the body.
They took Pentax’s build and created a masterpiece, brought me over.
Paired with a Z7, takes amazing pictures.
Enjoying it so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighter, faster, sharper
Verified PurchaseI'm a 15 yr Nikon DSLR shooter after years shooting Canon supplied SLR cameras. I recently moved to a Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and departing from my trusted D850. I'm upgraded to the Z 70-200mm f/2.8s for my Z8 to make it more comfortable to use handheld for indoor sports while using a monopod for outdoor sports. This Z lens is part of my new trinity. It is lighter and shorter length and shorter minimum distance than either F mount G & E lens models. I'm very happy with the Z mount 70-200 f/2.8ss lens with my Z8. I have much sharper images and much less out of focus shots. The Z8 starts snapping on release and continues its focus tracking over the sequence of shots. Even if 1st shot is a bit soft on focus, by 2nd shot, the focus is tack sharp as a player dribbles down court or spikes a volleyball.
I do like having the customizable command/function buttons on the lens. I can assign these to change focus points or any of many assignable functions. The only additional display button with a display at the top of the lens and I don't find that useful when viewing through the viewfinder.
I hate that the zoom ring was moved to the front of the lens while the focus ring in the middle. The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E lens has this design and it continues on the Z lens. With the Z lens on a monopod, I have need to stretch my left hand out to zoom and that can introduce shake and drag on the lens from my hand motion. When handheld, my left hand often moves the focus ring inadvertently while reaching the zoom ring. Worst my left arm is quite tired after a 2 consecutive basketball games.
Nikon does not include a Arca Swiss slotted lens foot to use on monopods & tripods with Arca plates. The consumer has to buy a Arca plate or a 3rd party lens foot with Arca plate. Also for the latest prices, Nikon doesn't include a carry/storage case. Instead there is a cheap thin cloth sack that has a cover flap to hold the lens. There's not even a cinch bag as with other F mount lenses of yesteryear.
To make my Z 70-200mm more useable:
- For monopod use, I ended up getting an extra long 4.7in - 120mm Arca plate so I can hold the front of the Arca plate with my left hand and raise my fingers to operate the zoom ring.
- With the Z8 custom controls, I've disabled the focus ring in autofocus mode to avoid any unintentional changes when handholding.
This lens is faster and sharper than ever despite the zoom ring ergonomics issues.
This lens & Z8 has elevated my sport photography image quality and yields.
